Does having a big first baby set up all your other babies being big?

Just as the title says! My first baby was 9lb4.. currently pregnant with baby number 2 and I'm just wondering if people had a big baby first and the ones that followed were just as big or bigger or is it completely random? Didn't have GD with baby number 1, I just made a big one 😂

The same thing worries me... DS was 8lbs15oz and although he was delivered very uneventfully, my nerves were damaged and I couldn't feel my bladder for 4 months, luckily all seems ok now. I really want a second but I'm scared I'm going to grow a 10 pounder this time and have nerve damage again.

So the general consensus is that we're all going to be really surprised if baby is less than 8.5 pounds 🥴

As PP have said, statistically babies are bigger in subsequent pregnancies, all things being equal. A significantly smaller baby during pregnancy is a cause for note (not necessarily serious but they'll watch it).

Of course being late / early will influence this too.

DD was 9lb 7oz at bang on 40 weeks. DS was 7lb 1oz at 37 weeks. He probably would've been about 8.5lb if he'd gone to full term like DD.

Minikievs · 31/08/2023 10:43

First was 8 14, second was 8 4 😊
Although I was 15 days over with first and by the time I had my second they only let you go 10 days over. So maybe if they'd cooked for an extra 5 days it would've made a difference

Maddy70 · 31/08/2023 10:44

Mine were both the same size

heartofglass23 · 31/08/2023 11:39

They usually get bigger (unless shorter gestation)

boysmuminherts · 31/08/2023 11:41

first baby 9lb7
second 8lb10

REBM · 31/08/2023 12:13

My first two (girls) were tiny, but born early (36 weeks and 38 weeks). My second two (boys) first boy was 8lb 12, a huge increase on my girls and born at 39+4 then my fourth was born, same gestation and weighed 8lb 8oz. Consultant had told me it would be unusual for a subsequent baby to be smaller but he was so, fingers crossed for you OP

BananaSlug · 31/08/2023 12:15

My first was the smallest at 8lbs 9 the rest were bigger

MrsSlocombesCat · 31/08/2023 12:19

My first was 7lb 8oz, second 9lb 4oz, third 8lb 4oz, fourth 8lbs 14oz, fifth 8lb 12 oz. They’re all grown up now and the second and third are the tallest. And my pelvic floor has suffered!

skkyelark · 31/08/2023 13:42

DD1 9lb 12oz, hadn't been expecting a particularly big baby. No indications of GD (and they did check her blood sugars after birth).

Growth scans with DD2 , every measurement and scan said she'd be 25th-50th centile. Tested for GD as a precaution, negative. 8lb 11oz, born 10 days earlier – she'd have been a little lighter than DD1 at the same gestation, but not much.

So apparently that's just how I make them, large, but stealthily so!

theginge · 31/08/2023 14:20

1st - 8lb 6oz @ 37+2
2nd - 9lb 6oz @ 40+0
3rd - 10lb 11oz @ 40+2 😱

MotelCalifornia · 31/08/2023 14:31

1st 8lb 11, 2 weeks late.
2nd 9lb, one week early due to elective section!

ShineBright1209 · 31/08/2023 14:39

1st - 7lb 10oz - 10 days late
2nd - 7lb 8oz - 9 days early
3rd - 7lb 15oz - due date
4th - 6lb 15oz - 5 days early

Twizbe · 31/08/2023 14:44

9lb1 @ 38+6 then 9lb3 @40+2

Second birth was tons easier though. Beautiful, fast, waterbirth. No tears either despite needing stitches after DC1.

JenniferBarkley · 31/08/2023 14:49

First was 9lb 7, second was 9lb 12 and born two weeks earlier.

I was high 8lbs and DH was low 10lbs, so we were never likely to make small babies. I would have been worried if number 2 had been a 6lber, despite that being a perfectly healthy weight for others.

All I'll say is, god bless the c section Grin

MissM94 · 31/08/2023 15:12

I'm going to have to come back and let you know how big the baby is! Only 16 weeks to go 😴😂

11lbs Mnamna. Woah!

9lbs for no 1 here and 7.3 for no 2. He was 2 weeks early and the midwife had just told me I was :cooking up another big one'. Sooo grateful to him for coming early and everything was so much easier (and quicker) second time around. In fact it took longer for the delivery suite to print off my birth notes than it had taken me to give birth! 2 hrs 22mins from when I arrived at hospital - (the printer was playing up and took 2 hrs 30 to print them!!)

SockQueen · 31/08/2023 17:01

10lb at 42 weeks.
9lb12oz at 39+2 - induced early because of his size. Very glad he came out sooner - imagine how big he could have got if he'd stayed in as long as his brother!

2nd degree tears both times, but healed well.
