Does anyone know if it’s worth trying to harvest colostrum if you’re not planning on breast feeding? I wanted to ask my midwife about it but she said we don’t need to discuss it because I’ll be bottle feeding🤔

GlitterDragon · 06/11/2023 21:25

@FirstMondayInMay I would say there’s benefit of expressing and saving colostrum, even if you don’t breastfeed in the long run. It’s full of vitamins, minerals, and antibodies. Easily digested too as babies stomachs are very tiny when they are first born. So super beneficial for baby. It takes a bit of patience. Just need some 1ml sterile syringes to draw it up. You can use one syringe like 3x a day, keep this in the fridge, then at night pop the syringes in the freezer until baby is here, then defrost them in warm water before serving - so to speak.

@GlitterDragon amazing, thanks! I’m still only 34 weeks but definitely something to think about for when the time comes!

Im formula feeding but considering harvesting colostrum as it's normally the first 2-3 days of a babies feed from breast feeding before the milk starts coming in.

Oh amazing - thank you for sharing this. I was going to ask my midwife about it at our next visit.

I think if you’re feeling up to it the. It’s worth it trying to harvest whether breastfeeding or bottle feeding.
Thanks for all the advice I’ll give it a go once I’m 36 weeks next week

I’ve called in sick to work today. It’s not something I usually do but am feeling so under the weather I know I need to rest. I still feel a bit guilty about it though - but I need to remember I’m making decisions based on looking after 2 of us now not just me

RG84 · 07/11/2023 10:45

I turned 34 weeks yesterday and will also try harvesting at 36 weeks. I am planning to bottle feed but will still try and collect if it works. I ordered a kit online, still yet to read the instructions but yeah in another 2 weeks.
I have a midwife appointment on Thursday so will also check with them.

Mushroo · 07/11/2023 10:49

Another planning to get some colostrum. I have gestational diabetes so they really recommend it as it can help with baby blood sugars.

Seems there’s no real downside to giving it a go.

GingerJanee · 07/11/2023 14:24

Hi everyone, just back from my midwife appointment today and baby is currently back to back with me. Please tell me somebody has some sort of advice or good news on how I can get them to shift a little because I know only downsides! Also got informed my induction will most likely be booked for 22nd December if everything carries on as is at the moment with no complications (due the 14th) if I don’t go before then so was a barrel of laughs coming out of the appointment today!

Nclktnntt · 07/11/2023 14:51

Hi @GingerJanee so I've seen a few things about trying not to sit leaning back, so I saw someone using the fitness ball where they where on their knees - knees wide - ball infront of them and they where leaning / resting on it with their arms - they had it on the sofa, apparently sitting forward will encourage baby to switch. They also sat on it wide legged but leaning forward again so gravity wise for baby is more comfortable for them to switch positions. That's all I've seen though all based on that theory 😊

@GingerJanee I second what @Nclktnntt had said definitely! We’re doing NCT at the moment and the facilitator keeps saying this to all of us. I’m doing it now and all the time too to keep baby in the right position

SMG1992 · 07/11/2023 18:31

@GingerJanee is there any reason they told you the induction date? I’m just curious as am also due 14th.
really hoping I come slightly early though (I keep thinking it will be 11th - based on nothing except a hunch)

Nclktnntt · 07/11/2023 18:55

@GingerJanee this might be of interest to you too - the all fours position www.instagram.com/reel/CzWV6Nwtd72/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

Thank you so much @Nclktnntt and @smldnlove this is so helpful! I’ll definitely be trying these things from tonight. Conscious of the multiple horror stories I’ve heard so anything I can do to help move he/she a little I’m willing to try.

@SMG1992 No literally no real reason at all except I asked what was their policy on how many days I could go overdue and he advised me 41+3 is their standard policy but as this would mean Christmas Eve they wouldn’t be keen to induce round then and to expect (if I get that far) to be taken in on the 22nd. I’m booked now for 2 weeks time, 4 weeks and then again on week 40 and they’ll assess then but just advised plenty of walking and hopefully baby will come themselves before then. I’m also same as you really hopeful they’ll be here before their due date but so far they’re still pretty high up so here’s hoping he/she likes moving in the next 5 weeks 😂

SMG1992 · 07/11/2023 21:04

@GingerJanee i was supposed to have my midwife app today but they rescheduled for Sunday so I might ask the same question as that’s interesting to know. Mine is also still really high up so he’s not going anywhere any time soon

Undercoverunicorn · 07/11/2023 21:29

@GingerJanee might be worth a look at the spinning babies website as I think it also covers back to back as well as transverse

Some news from me, DS was born in the early hours, after my waters broke yesterday at 35+5. He is ok, in special care just to keep an eye on things after some complications in the c section itself and his blood sugars getting v low. He's also a touch jaundiced. Am expressing colostrum for him but not getting a massive amount, but trying to remember its day 1. Am exhausted and in a fair amount of pain, but feeling thankful we are all here and safe.

Charlielechat · 07/11/2023 21:41

@Undercoverunicorn Congratulations on your baby boy! I'm sure that was a big surprise! Hope you both recover well and get home soon

Moriquendi · 07/11/2023 21:52

Congratulations @Undercoverunicorn !! Great your little boy is here safely! I found C-section recovery dreadful for the first week but very quickly got better after that. Don’t stress about the colostrum, their stomachs are sooooo tiny at first so they only need a little.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 07/11/2023 22:02

@Undercoverunicorn Congratulations! I hope you both recover well. Jaundice is really common I’m sure my first had it but it passed quickly.

FirstMondayInMay · 07/11/2023 22:29

@Undercoverunicorn congrats on the safe arrival of your little one! Hopefully you’ll all be on your way home together very soon😊

Nclktnntt · 07/11/2023 22:40

Congratulations @Undercoverunicorn so glad you're both ok! I hope you recover quickly and little one is home with you soon 😊

I was jaundice when born - apparently I was orange.

GingerJanee · 07/11/2023 22:47

@SMG1992 I know they all come in their own time but I think it’s settling to know the kind of guidelines incase of going overdue. No harm in asking and knowing in your own head what you might expect!

@Undercoverunicorn thanks for the advice, massive congratulations on your baby boy! Well done mummy, wishing you all the happiness with your new bundle. I’m sure the hospital are keeping a close eye on you both.

VillageFete · 07/11/2023 23:31

@Undercoverunicorn Massive congratulations on the birth of your beautiful boy. You make sure you rest as much as you can. Huge well done!

Thamantha · 08/11/2023 07:16

@Undercoverunicorn congratulations on your wee one arriving! Hope you are both doing well and that you get to go home and have lots of baby snuggles soon.
