Glass of wine at 35 weeks pregnant

I had a glass of wine today at my mums funeral. The last few weeks have been awful with her dying very suddenly and being heavily pregnant.

I didn't ask for it but at the wake afterwards my husband came back with it and said one small glass won't hurt and you deserve it. I enjoyed every sip! It really did help settle me down after the service.

However, a friend made a comment at the funeral about it and I'm struggling to let it go. She said something along the lines of "no matter what I was going through I'd never have a drink while pregnant. Too many risks." She then laughed afterwards but it's bugging me.

Maybe I'm feeling especially emotional/sensitive today but since then she's worried me about having one glass. Thoughts?

Sorry to hear about your mum OP.

I'm glad you managed to relax for a few minutes with your drink ❣️ I had a few glasses of wine throughout my pregnancies and never thought anything of it at all! I used to tel my midwife if I'd had a glass and she would always say 'one or two won't hurt' x

What a load of illogical bollocks!

@Hintofreality "reassess your life" is quite extreme. I'm happy for you if you don't drink much or enjoy alcohol but before I was pregnant my go to was ALWAYS a glass of wine after a stressful day. Not sure why you feel the need to judge?

It helped me get through today. And like everyone said, I'm willing to bet my baby will be perfectly healthy and happy. It's not like I'm binge drinking daily!

Is your becks beer non alcoholic?

Odd choice of username for someone so pious about drinking 🙄

OP I'm sorry for your loss, one glass of wine will not have harmed your baby and I'm sure that's exactly what your mw would say.

Sorry about your mum, and please ignore your friend's insensitive comment. I know someone in Europe whose doctor recommended a daily glass of wine while pregnant. Especially at the end, you are very ok for one. Good luck with your new baby when they arrive :)

Cowlover89 · 21/08/2023 19:23

It's perfectly fine. Your friends a dick x

Cowlover89 · 21/08/2023 19:24

So sorry about your mam x

Itsnotrightbutitsok · 21/08/2023 19:27

I personally stopped drinking and smoking all together when I got pregnant but I was also careful about how much tuna I ate and everything, as I just didn’t want to take the risk.

But your ‘friend’ was a dick to say anything.

It is not up to anyone else what you do in your pregnancy, even if they know it’s not ok.

lavagal · 21/08/2023 19:36

You deserve that glass and baby will be fine - sorry you are going through a difficult time. I also had a small glass at DF funeral. DD is now 6 and absolutely fine

AmericasfavoritefightingFrenchman · 21/08/2023 19:36

My midwife advised a glass of wine when I went into labour with my first. I had been very careful throughout my first pregnancy with all kind of rules and so I didn’t. In hindsight I rather wish I had.

Perhaps your friend can explain what thing I ate or drank is likely to have caused my firstborn’s learning disability? Considering I abstained from alcohol, cheese, pâté, seafood, tuna, meat that wasn’t basically cremated etc etc? It’s mostly just down to luck.

vipersnest1 · 21/08/2023 19:38

@becksbeer123, are you OP's bitchy 'friend' by any chance?

Oh fgs your friend is a fool. The child is baked. One glass of wine at a funeral, she should learn to be quiet.

As the OP really enjoyed her harmless glass of wine, no, I don’t think an alternative would have been “ideal”.

OP I’m glad the majority of posters here have reassured you.

My friends husband is a pediatrician and he was fine with her having a couple of units of beer or wine each week throughout her pregnancies, after first trimester. Her young adult kids are fine; one is a doctor herself.

Fascinating. Please tell us more about your lifestyle

YukoandHiro · 21/08/2023 20:24

Your mum died and you're heavily pregnant: one glass of wine will make absolutely no difference and it's absolutely ok to let yourself have that moment of relaxation in a very difficult time.

Your friend is a dick. She doesn't have your best interests at heart.
