Pregnancy after miscarriage

Hi everyone. I had a missed miscarriage at 9 weeks pregnant. It’s been 3 weeks now and bleeding is getting lighter (I did expectant management). We really want to start trying again and the midwife said we didn’t have to wait for a period. I just wanted to ask a few questions for anyone that got pregnant after a miscarriage:

  1. how long after the bleeding stopped did you start trying again? I don’t know when I’ll ovulate because my periods are so irregular

  2. how long did the bleeding take to stop?

thank you x

I'm going through similar this week though medical management. The advice we got today was to do a pregnancy test 3 weeks later to ensure all pregnancy tissue has gone. They advised not to start trying until we got a negative pregnancy test, and part of reason they said was the psychological turmoil of not being sure if a new or previous pregnancy. I asked whether I needed to wait for a proper period and they said no. They said it can make it slightly harder to be precise on dates vs being able to measure against LMP but apart from that wasn't an issue as long as we had a negative pregnancy test first. I hope that helps.

@Khanga27 aww I'm sorry to hear that lovely, sending hugs. The same was said to us but I was just wondering when people who did get pregnant after a miscarriage ovulated.

I experienced a miscarriage in April at 6 weeks. I got pregnant again the next time I ovulated and I’m now 16 weeks. I tracked my ovulation and ovulated 12 days after - this was about 5 days after the bleeding stopped. It was all very quick but I was so desperate to just be pregnant again that I wanted to get on with it and dr had advised it was fine to try as soon as bleeding stopped. I had had a negative pregnancy test whilst I was still bleeding.

Rolo08 · 10/08/2023 04:05

@Misspotterscat congratulations lovely. How long did you bleed for? I've been bleeding for over 2 weeks so I'm in limbo atm

I'm sorry to hear of your losses and wish you all the best for the future.

I had a miscarriage at 7 weeks. Bleeding lasted 5 days with spotting for a day after that. The intra vaginal scan on day 5 (when I was finally able to get a hold of the EPU at the time) of bleeding showed no sign of pregnancy left. They confirmed the pregnancy and therefore miscarriage with HCG blood tests every 2 days.

I have clockwork periods. I tested negative on tests 5 days or so before my period was due. I got a positive test on the day my period would have been due, treating day one of the miscarriage as a period.

I had a mc in April, ovulated 8 days after negative test, and fell pregnant, then mc again unfortunately (was a chemical as they call it cause my bleeding started only 2 days after AF was due and i ovulated 9 days after bleeding stopped and fell pregnant again! I'm now 8 weeks. I ovulated quite quickly after bleeding, hoping ur the same and ur pregnant again soon. 😊

I had surgical management and was told No PIV (or baths or swimming) for 2 weeks after bleeding stopped to prevent infection. I also wanted to have a period first to know 1) no retained tissue and 2) all back to "normal". Was happier for having waited. Felt more myself, much less teary, more up for sex.

Hello, I was in your shoes back in Nov 2020.

My bleeding started 26th Nov, and bled for just over two weeks. I then kept checking with pregnancy tests, they were negative around day 14.

I had the clear blue ovulation kit and ovulated around 14th December. We conceived and found out 2nd Jan 2021. It was the saddest Christmas as there was an influx of pregnancy announcements but little did I know my little miracle was just around the corner. We have a healthy 2 year old now!

Good luck, stay positive 💐

Peony654 · 10/08/2023 09:58

I didn’t have any management, and bleeding stopped after 1 weeks. We are going to wait until I’ve had a period first, so it’s easier to track and also allow some more time to emotionally recover. I do have regular periods though.

Rolo08 · 10/08/2023 14:09

@bardosya how long after bleeding does that mean you ovulated then lovely? I'm over 2 weeks now and it's so hard not knowing when it will stop. I'm just wondering when I'm likely to ovulate once it does stop x

14 days but I was checking using the clear blue kit and body temperature. Although the midwife wasn't on board with trying so quickly but we had nothing to lose

Rolo08 · 10/08/2023 14:14

@bardosya is that the clearblue fertility monitor? I have pcos so my periods have always been irregular and I was told I don't even ovulate so I'm just wishing when I did for this miscarriage wasn't a one off 😔 I wouldn't even know how to check with temp x

Yes, you get a smiley face for 4 days in the cycle. Tbh we bought it on a whim, I have endometriosis so the journey wasn't the easiest. Your body temperature is normally higher than your normal body temperature when you ovulate. I used to check around the week when I expected to ovulate as my cycle is irregular at times.

Hi, I thought I would jump on this thread as I can relate so much.

I have PCOS and we have been TTC for just over 2 half years.
It has just been over two weeks since I MC. I started bleeding on the Saturday (I have had heavier periods) think I may have passed on the Sunday morning as there was quite a lot of blood in my urine, but again not really all that heavy and cramping wasn't terrible either. I was spotting slightly on the Monday but bleeding had completely stopped come the Monday night so really I only bleed for two days and it wasn't heavy at all.
Got a scan on the Tuesday and they didn't see anything so figured I may have already passed. Got bloods taken to check HCG levels and then repeated on the Thursday when MC was confirmed. My HCG levels had dropped.
I took a pregnancy test on the Tuesday night which was basically negative and then going with the blood tests I didn't bother taking another one.

I started ovulation testing the following Monday with clear blue. It was just the circle which means low fertility but come the Tuesday it went to the flashing smiley face but I am on day 9 of the flashing smile so no peak day as of yet and it's frustrating me so much.
I am also doing the cheap strip ones which the lines are dark on them but I am just feeling so frustrated that I am getting the flashing smile. I am trying to be positive and think along the lines of, well at least I am building up to ovulation but I'm worried in case I don't get that peak day 😓

My biggest fear isn't about MC again it's the fear of me not falling pregnant for another 2 half years.

I feel really feel all your girls pain 🥺🩷

I had a miscarriage confirmed over Christmas last year. We started trying again as soon as the pregnancy tests I was advised to take after 2wks came back negative. my bleeding was throughout the entire duration of me finding out I was pregnant I bled for about 8-10wks consistently but after I passed the sac I only bled for about a week if that (probably because I’d already passed so much blood throughout). We tried for a very long time.

We we’re lucky enough to fall pregnant again around a week and a half after the bleeding stopped according to the dates they gave me (I didn’t have a period between us trying again) and I’m currently 30wks pregnant with my rainbow baby.

i did buy ovulation tests but they were way out and said I’d ovulated several times throughout the period we were trying.

It hasn’t been the easiest pregnancy I bled on and off all the way up to about 26wks which was quite triggering and I did wonder if maybe we’d tried again too soon and seeing people I know having babies around what would’ve been my original due date has been really hard but I wouldn’t change the fact that I get to meet my little one in a few weeks.

I would definitely think about it before trying again as it can be quite a lot to take in. I hope everything works out for you and that you get your rainbow baby very soon.

HollyBrwn · 10/08/2023 21:13

@Rolo08 I would definitely recommend getting the clear blue digital ovulation tests as I have PCOS and they helped me track my ovulation the past twice (helping me fall pregnant). I have started using them again after my MC x

Rolo08 · 10/08/2023 22:41

@Lilacrose27 congratulations lovely. I just did a pregnancy test which EPAU are hoping will be negative by Tuesday. It still had a faint line but my bleeding has definitely slowed down. Did you mean your bleeding after the miscarriage carried on even though you had tested negative when you started trying again? I'm just wondering whether we should start trying after the negative test or when the bleeding stops if that makes sense x

OP posts:
Rolo08 · 10/08/2023 22:42

@HollyBrwn thank you! I think I'm going to get the fertility monitor because after this miscarriage I'm so desperate to get pregnant again and just the sticks have never worked for me 😔 x

Lilacrose27 · 10/08/2023 23:00

@Rolo08 Thank You 😊 I tested negative as my bleeding subsided (I was a nightmare it’s the only time I’ve ever wanted a negative test) and we started trying. I miscarried officially on December 28th and the bleeding had completely stopped by January 4th. We were told to wait until the bleeding stops and the tests were negative as you’re open to infection if you’re still bleeding (not sure how true that is) and that they prefer you to wait until you’ve had a period as it makes it easier to date your pregnancy but honestly they just dated me from the date of my miscarriage and then adjusted the dates at my 12wk scan.

Dontbesuspicious · 10/08/2023 23:15

I had a MMC at 12 weeks (scan) in 2014. It took about 3 weeks after medical management to stop bleeding but I decided to just leave 1 cycle until I had a period to make sure everything was totally clear. It took 6 months to fall pregnant again, resulting in a healthy full term birth. Who is now 8. It was actually only the 6th month that we actually monitored ovulation as i was concerned I wasn't working properly.
Good luck.. and take your time. I'm so sorry for your loss and it is ok to grieve the loss. I always say it's not just the loss, it's the plans you put in place. X

BudgetBuster · 11/08/2023 09:48

I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks in November, and we started trying 2 weeks after I stopped bleeding. However my cycle didn't regulate until month 3, and we happened to fall pregnant again then. Unfortunately at 7 weeks we miscarried again. It took 3 months for my cycle to regulate again and we fell pregnant again in June. I am now 10 weeks today. After the 2nd miscarriage we didn't start trying until after the 2nd cycle. I was using Easy at Home ovulation strops and Premom App to monitor ovulation.

HollyBrwn · 11/08/2023 10:10

@Rolo08 Is that the clear blue fertility monitor? I have heard that's decent as well. Sending lots of love 🌈 x

Rolo08 · 11/08/2023 12:54

@HollyBrwn yes it is, hopefully I have some luck with it
