NEED URGENT ADVICE ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A MIDWIFE PLEASE...........

On sunday evening i had a very bad bleed which lasted around 40 seconds, it started by coughing.

had scan today and was told that although baby is absolutly fine there is an area of bleed and fluid between either the baby and womb or sac and womb im unsure which.

I asked if this is dangerous and she went quiet which worried me.

The other nurse stepped in and said that it can cause m/c but its not necissarely the case.

The scanner woman said that it seems to be clotting which is a good thing and baby was very active and growing exactly to dates.

Im not sure what to think now

I will write down what my notes say and see if anyone would be able to translate them for me.

Bipariental diameter 30.0 mm
femur length 17.0 mm

(dont have a clue what these are)

heart action present
amniotic fluid normal
placenta posterior

fetal movement seen

an area of bleed and fluid seen adjacent to the os and within the subchronic space, anterior aspect of the uterus, measuring approx = 65x30x80mms

Apperances of an intrauterine pregnancy and coexisting area of bleed at os

I dont know what any of this means

ILTS, I'm so sorry you are having this worry(sad). I can't really help except to say that BPD is the width of the babies head and the femure length is the length of one of the leg bones. How many week are you now?

How far gone are you? All I can translate is femur length which is either a bone in the arm, or leg (I always forget which), heart action present kinda self explan, but def a good sign and the appearance of intrauterine pregnancy means it's 'in the right place' - not ectopic/in your tubes etc. I don't know anything about that type of bleed (or any really) but didn't want your post to pass by {{huugs}} x

Have they said anything about ging back again for scans/check ups or anything to look out for?

Looking at my maternity notes you babies measurements are spot on for dates.. When is someone going to see you again?

she showed me but i dont really know what i was looking for, it was sort of the length of the sac in a sort of half moon type shape i think but it wasnt there at my 9 week or 11 week scan, strange i think xx

they have said just to look out for any more bleeding and go back in 5 weeks for my 20 week scan. I would have liked more check ups for piece of mind to be honest but ho hum

all the news sounds good to me, im not a mw, im a doula, but did have bleeds and extra scans.

if there is something particular you are worried about in relation to what they wrote then call and ask, they are there to help, and happy too.

take it easy - i am sure she told you this, no lifting blah blah! but please take care, rest and stay at home if you can, its great the bleed has stopped and looks to be clotting. just take extra care of yourself

she didnt tell me not to lift anything infact she barely said anything just spurted alot of medical jargon at me and sent me on my way lol

i know the 'lifting' thing is a bit of an old wives tail, but my mw said it to me, and if ou think about it, there is some truth in it, especially i tihnk in a bleed.

get some rest, make dh wait on you!!!

placenta posterior - placenta has formed at the back of the uterus

fetal movement seen - baby is moving around good

an area of bleed and fluid seen adjacent to the os and within the subchronic space, anterior aspect of the uterus, measuring approx = 65x30x80mms - this is the bleed, the subchorionic space is along the edge of the placenta, the bleed is near to the cervix (the os) and the mm measurements are the size of the area of bleeding.

This type of bleed is sometimes called a subchorionic haematoma, I've had them in two of my pregnancies. Most go on to resolve with absolutely no problems at all, you may have a bit more bleeding (probably old brown blood) or the bleed may be absorbed meaning that there won't be more bleeding.

The advice I've been given (from the FMC in London), is to take things easy until there's absolutely no bleeding or spotting, stay well hydrated because the blood can irritate the uterus, and if you get another red bleed to go back to be rescanned.

I hope you're okay, it is really scary.

could this be the bleed putting pressure on my cervix?

i had another big bleed last night

lovely registrare (sp?) on delivery suite has just explained it all to me and i have another scan tomorrow

ILTS - I had some big bleeds between 8 and 14 weeks and they were the result of a retroplacental haematoma and I was told to expect bleeding to continue throughout. I had spotting until about 20 weeks and am now 38+2 and all is fine. How big is the fluid/blood?

My obs consultant told me to expect to bleed until the haematoma came out so try not to worry too much. Is it above the baby or below?

I have a subchronic heamatoma too, had one with my DS. I am being scanned fortnightly x

they told me to go back in 5weeks for my 20 week scan but i phoned today to try and get a better explanation and explained the bad bleed last night and she got me the scan for tomrrow as said bleeding sounds quite bad. Im scared to move although ive only had bleeding while lying in bed

Hi, can't add much but your original report mentioned the bleed being by the os-that's the inside bit of your cervix so you are quite likely to have the blood passing through your cervix so you know about it. Noone has a definate answer as to why some ladies bleed and some don't. Some ladies have bleeding and a cause can't be seen on the scan- with you knowing where it is- i.e. right by the exit- that does make it more likely for you to keep having bleeding, whether its bright fresh blood or older blood. If you're lucky it might settle down over a few days or weeks, but (sorry,bit depressing this bit) some ladies have bleeding (and the worry) ALL through their pregnancies.
Bleeding does not neccesarily = miscarriage/stillbirth. Bleeding does = anxiety, worry, panic!
Your next scan may show the area of bleeding has got bigger. Again, that doesn't mean you will miscarry, it can just take a while for it all to settle down.
Getting to 15 weeks without bleeding is good, your baby is growing normally which is great (they may not re-measure your little one unless there has been 2 weeks between scans).
Its extremely unlikely anything you do will make much difference, but the only advice anyone can/will give you is to rest up and try to relax ( yeah, right!)
