On sunday evening i had a very bad bleed which lasted around 40 seconds, it started by coughing.

had scan today and was told that although baby is absolutly fine there is an area of bleed and fluid between either the baby and womb or sac and womb im unsure which.

I asked if this is dangerous and she went quiet which worried me.

The other nurse stepped in and said that it can cause m/c but its not necissarely the case.

The scanner woman said that it seems to be clotting which is a good thing and baby was very active and growing exactly to dates.

Im not sure what to think now

I will write down what my notes say and see if anyone would be able to translate them for me.

Bipariental diameter 30.0 mm
femur length 17.0 mm

(dont have a clue what these are)

heart action present
amniotic fluid normal
placenta posterior

fetal movement seen

an area of bleed and fluid seen adjacent to the os and within the subchronic space, anterior aspect of the uterus, measuring approx = 65x30x80mms

Apperances of an intrauterine pregnancy and coexisting area of bleed at os

I dont know what any of this means

sorry for my spelling im not thinking straight and any advice will be very gratefully recieved xxxxxxx

Hi iliketosleep...

Hope you are doing ok and tryin to relax n take it easy.

I also had scary bleeds early on at about 15 weeks then again at 24 ish weeks which was awful since every textbook I read said you should defo not be bleeding at that stage. I am now 37+5 so hoping your LO will be totally unaffected by all of this and just happily growing away no probs.

They thought I had an "ectropian" at first so the bleeding was just coming from cells that were meant to be inside the uterus growing outside and getting ruptured for some reason.

It turned out that the edge of the placenta near the cervix had started coming away causing the bleeding but then the placenta had just moved up slightly and was ok again. They did say it meant every time my uterus took a big stretch there may be a bleed in which case they would monitor the situation but ever since the 2nd sonographer (who was really, really kind and great at her job!!!) noted what happened and the consultant checked me over again a few weeks later, I've been ok as far as I know.

Totally thinking of you - it is terrifying but just try your very best not to worry and it is better that they actually have "diagnosed" something rather than "some women have bleeds and we never know why"... Not very reassuring coming from a medical professional even though it must be true...

Iliketosleep, I too had terrible bleeds with dd2. They started from about 16wks right through until I had her. It was really scary as there was so much blood (tmi)

They never did find the reason (but it seemed to happen more after sex, so that was a no no for a while)

DD2 is 17 now, so no long term damage! I hope it all goes well for he rest of your pg. I'm glad the last scan was a positive one.

best of luck

iliketosleep · 29/02/2008 16:32

thanks

actually, now that the panic is over do you think it would be safe to have sex before dp has to buy bigger underpants lol

poor mans been deprived for 5 weeks....

Hi there - I'm also 15 weeks and have a subchorionic haematoma.

I've seen 2 consultants about this and as you may know, we're in a rare group as most people with subchorionic haematomas have them before 12 weeks.

If it makes you feel any better - I've been hospitalised 3 times with severe blood loss (haemorrhage lasting c.5 hrs and then residual bleeding of 5+ days) and the diagnosis is a subchorionic haematoma and my baby is still OK.

Each time I've been certain that I have miscarried as have passed clots the size of my hand. But the baby is still OK - unbelievable!

In terms of the blurb above, here's my understanding of it all:

BPD is the circumference of the head. 3 cms is normal for your dates. I know this because I am 5 days behind you and my BPD is 2.83 - and this is about 20% on the chart which indicates normal growth patterns.

Femur is the thigh bone - used as an indicator of growth. They didn't do this measurement on me but as long as they say it's normal then no worries. The notes also indicate that your baby is alive and moving on its own (good stuff), that your placenta is at the back of your uterus (all good) and that the fluid around the baby is the right amount (also good).

The blood (ie the haematoma) is anterior which means to the front of your uterus and is an asmall - average size. I hope that is helpful.

Other questions you might like to ask: How has the placenta been affected by this? Should I expect more bleeding from the haematoma? Can you see where the bleed is originating from?

Hope this is helpful - but it sounds like you and your baby are doing just fine K.x
