Empty Gestational Sack

Hi All,

I went for an early eating scan tonight, based on my last period I should be 9 weeks, but my gestational sack was measuring 15mm and no baby to be seen. I’ve had no bleeding and lots of pregnancy symptoms. The sonographer said I need to go back in a week, it’s either earlier than I thought or the baby hasn’t developed.

anyone got some good news stories on similar situations? I’m devastated.

Just a side note. I have now seen the paperwork which would make me 6+5, I am calculating I should be 9, that’s such a difference I don’t see how it’s possible that there is still a baby, I track my cycle every month and it’s between 31-34 days so to be out by 2 weeks is huge and feels impossible.

Hello,

I went for an early scan after wiping and seeing very light pink discharge. I was supposed to be 8 weeks, they measured me “less than 6 weeks” empty sac. They told me to come back in 2 weeks. I had a private scan already booked, so we went to that a week later, the gestational sac was measuring 18mm and was empty. I researched this and found at this size it’s a failed pregnancy.
It was confirmed a week later at EPAU, the sac had grown to 22mm but was empty.
I had pregnancy symptoms, sickness, sore boobs all the way until my D&C yesterday, it was very cruel. I had no episodes of bleeding or pain… Not even after they told me it wasn’t progressing properly (They said once you know psychologically your body may follow and you will miscarry).

Sorry this is not a positive story, 🙁 but since this happened to me, I’ve seen how common it is. I also posted a similar thread to you asking for advice and there were some positive stories and people had just got their dates wrong. I knew when I ovulated as we were tracking so I knew I couldn’t be out by that far… I hope you get the answers you need, and I hope this is not your experience, but I also heard so many times, “you feel sick which is a good sign” and that because my pregnancy tests weren’t going lighter that’s also a good sign..

And it absolutely is not indicative of a healthy pregnancy, your body can do strange things!

Good luck and I’m sorry you are experiencing such uncertainty at the moment. I hope you have a positive outcome xxxxx

Oh honey, I am so sorry! I keep reading people say D+C what does that mean, please?

how are you feeling? Did you have a yolk sack?

@SPink91 im also sorry you're going through this and sorry this isnt a positive story either but i also had this, although i did have some bleeding. I looked it up and its likely a 'blighted ovum' which i discovered is likely down to abnormal chromosomes. I also had a d&c as my body never passed it they had made me wait 2 weeks for another scan. (Dilation and curettage) its an op to remove the products and i was lucky enough to get mine sent off for testing and it did come back as abnormal chromosomes. Sorry i really hope yours is different and you just ovulated later.

Hi OP, I'm really sorry you are going through this, it is such a shock to learn things aren't as you had hoped at an early scan. I recently had a private scan at what I expected to be 7 weeks, and we saw an empty 13mm sac. That would have put me at least two weeks behind, but I have very regular cycles and my first positive test had been 3 weeks earlier so the dates just didn't stack up that I could have been 5 weeks.

I read every thread on here and it really can go either way, particularly if have irregular cycles. Things are still so small, and an internal scan is more reliable. Otherwise I prepared for the worst but hoped for the best.

On the advice of Tommy's I called my local EPU and they agreed to rescan me in 2 weeks. I had no bleeding and my pregnancy symptoms continued. The waiting was terrible. My outcome wasn't positive I'm afraid, at 9 weeks there was a yolk sac but still no embryo. The EPU were able to offer me options, where a repeat private scan wouldn't have been able to. I chose medical management because I just wanted it to be over.

I feel like I've been on the worst rollercoaster, the shock of finding out I was pregnant (it happened on our first try) then the shock of the scan, and waiting for what felt like an eternity, then the disappointment that things had not developed. Look after yourself and I truly wish for the best outcome Flowers

Sorry you’re going through this OP. Was there a yolk sac as well as gestational sac? Around 6 weeks there may not be a fetal pole seen yet but there is likely to be a yolk sac. Is it possible you could be 6 weeks rather than 9? When did you get your first positive test?

Todayisanewday75 · 27/07/2023 08:36

I can’t remember the exact details as it was over 19 years ago, but I had an early scan as I had some bleeding and they could see the sac but no baby but when I went back to be scanned again there was a definite heartbeat and the bleeding just stopped. I had long and irregular cycles so just wasn’t as far along as I thought.

Hiya,

thank you! Yes there was a yolk sack also, she’s dated me as 6 weeks 5 days based on the size of the gestational sack. I first tested positive on Tuesday 27th June which would have meant I was 3 weeks 4 days as opposed to the 5 weeks I thought I was.

Thanks everyone for all the info, it isn’t filling me with much hope :-(.

My only hope at the moment is that years ago I had an abortion (no judgement please, I was in a bad place). Anyway at the time I calculated I was 8 weeks, but they measured me at 6, I was super shocked as it meant according to the dates I was on my period 2 weeks after I actually was and when I had sex to conceive.

Hello, I’m in the same boat as you 😘 my sac measured at 10mm last Wednesday no yolk no fetus. I think I was 6 weeks give or take 🤷🏻‍♀️. I’ve had pregnancy symptoms but also a lot of cramping and brown discharge. I have my rescan on Monday and I’m so so nervous. My boobies don’t feel sore today and I havnt had any waves of nausea which is filling me with dread too.

Oh honey, it’s so stressful isn’t it. I feel like I haven’t had as many pregnancy symptoms today as before and I don’t know if it’s a psychological thing like I’m trying to be ok with it ahead of being told my fate.

as I am supposed to be at a date where I am scannable I am going to call the GP and ask for a referral to an EPU so if I do need to end the pregnancy I’m in the right care rather than go back to my scan facility I think.

sending all my love and positive thoughts.

@SPink91 yeah I would too. 💜
the 10 day wait it awful. I’m in limbo. I don’t want to make plans but I also don’t want to be negative.
I do feel once you have been given a doubt you find all things to support that doubt (ie symptoms going)
i hope all is well for you and I’m sending you lots of love and baby dust. 🩷🩵 xx

SPink91 · 28/07/2023 07:10

Thanks honey, you too! I called 111 last night as my GP couldn’t help, they wanted me to go to A&E which is 25 miles away, but I didn’t want to, it was the middle of the night when they called back and I was exhausted, so I’m now calling again today to see if I can be referred or seen at my local walk in clinic.

sending you all the baby dust too xxx

@SPink91 morning lovely, 🩷 what made you call 111? Do you have your EPU’s contact no?
I called the early prey unit and they had me in straight away for a scan. Xx

TheBirdintheCave · 28/07/2023 08:46

Sorry you're going through this :( When it happened to me it turned out to be a blighted ovum where the sac had grown but the baby hadn't. Are you 100% sure of your dates in terms of when you ovulated?

SPink91 · 28/07/2023 08:50

hey honey, when I checked online it said I had to be referred to the EPU, but I’m just being sent round in circles it’s so frustrating!!

OP posts:
SPink91 · 28/07/2023 08:52

So my the first day of my last period was 21st May, my cycles are 31-34 days long, usually 32. Based on that calculation I would be 9 weeks and 2 day, my midwife used the old school 28 day so has dated be as 9 weeks and 5 days. The Gestational sack today would be 7 weeks…. Quite significantly out?

OP posts:
Ems1992 · 28/07/2023 09:09

Can you speak to your GP? Mine referred me and I had a scan at EPU the next day. However I do think the criteria for a referral is that you have to have had some bleeding of some description. The problem is, EPU wont even acknowledge a private scan, (I had this problem, even though the sonographer that did it was actually on shift that day at EPU who clearly had a side hustle at babybond😂)
I agree that it’s very cruel to wait - if you can afford another private scan, if you go at a time where the pregnancy would definitely be seen, they can also refer to EPU. I was offered this however I was already under them at the time. X

TheBirdintheCave · 28/07/2023 09:25

@SPink91 Hmm, yes it is still quite a way out :(

SPink91 · 28/07/2023 09:27

They have offered me a rescan, but I’m 10 weeks on Sunday, I am at a point you should see the baby.

I’ve started getting a lot of cramping and lower back pain now as well so I’m hoping they should refer me.

OP posts:
Uremindmeofthebabe · 28/07/2023 09:37

I became pregnant and 4 days before we went for our 12 week scan I had brown discharge. Looking back I didn't really have many pregnancy symptoms but it was my first pregnancy and I was a naive.

My scan got brought forward and they found an empty sac. I wanted to just go home and hide away so I choose to let nature take it course.

I had little blood and it passed quite quickly.

I'm sorry this isn't a positive story. I hope you will be ok. Just know this happens a lot, I know that doesn't make it any easier 💙

Wen19 · 28/07/2023 09:43

@SPink91 aw yeah I contacted EPU directly as I was having brown discharge and bad cramps and bad bad lower back pain. My rescan is on Monday!
pregnancy symptoms are back again today with full force.
what do the cramps feel like? Are they bearable? Do they happen when you are laid down or standing? Mine where when I was laid on my back. X

SPink91 · 28/07/2023 09:59

I have to be referred I can’t call them myself unfortunately, each unit differs but I also spoke to Midwife who said tell the GP you need an urgent referral and they will sort it. I just want to know one way or the other.

Mine are whatever position I’m in, and yea my back has started today :-(. What a shit situation hun x

OP posts:
Wen19 · 28/07/2023 11:17

@SPink91 aw honey 💜 I know everyone’s story is different but I’m sure cramps arnt ment to be bad unless they come with bleeding?
oh bloody hell. We can just call our EPU her and they get a midwife/nurse to call you back within the hour. Feel quite lucky now tbh.
however I will never recommend anyone having an early scan. It’s caused me so much worry and anxiety. X
