Early scan - empty gestational sac

Hi!
I had some very light spotting two days ago and due to this my GP referred to EPU. The spotting was only a couple of times as I wiped that morning, nothing more and no pain.

For background, my app says, 7+3, but I didn’t ovulate until CD22, which puts me at least a week behind so we did not expect to be told 7+ anyway.

They did a scan and there was a gestational sac “measuring under 6 weeks” and told me to come back in 2 weeks. Am I wrong for thinking this is actually possible? Or did it stop growing? EPU declined to do bloods when I asked stating it “wouldn’t change the outcome” and it’s “50/50” as to whether the pregnancy is viable.

We have a follow up scan at EPU in two weeks, but we actually had already booked a private scan prior to all of this which is next weekend… So we will attend this and see if there are any changes.

any experiences here?

Hi Ems!
My app says 7 weeks+1 but I had spotting for a few days and had a reassurance scan yesterday morning. They said it looks like a 5 weeks pregnancy! and they want to a viability scan in 2 weeks time. I have been reading like crazy since yesterday to see what this means and if there is a way of improving the fetus size at this point. Let us know how it goes. All the best and fingers crossed for both of us xx

Ems1992 · 07/07/2023 16:56

This sounds very similar to me!
I have also been researching like mad, some have been really reassuring… others not!
Fingers crossed for us both. I will update when I know! I have a private scan booked for next Saturday so we will know then (if I don’t miscarry before this!)

My mum thinks its because I have not been eating enough! My dad delivered boxes of food today 😄 best of luck for Saturday. Keep me posted xx

Hello!
I also ovulated around cd22 so they put me a due date 08/02 but after scan pushed back to 16/02 (8 days later)

How far do you think you should be if you take last missed period then add the delay in ovulation?

My last pregnancy was unfortunately a blighted ovum and experienced seeing nothing in this sack - however , it can just be to early and a lot of women shared this with me.

This time I had a scan when I new I'd be 7 weeks adding the extra days and was able to see everything clearly. I think it's very hit and miss between that 6-7 weeks period and things can just take a while to get going for scan purposes .

thinking of you ! X

You cant see more than the sac at 5 weeks. Even at 6, its hit and miss.
After 7 weeks you should be able to see the embryo inside the sac, though, if the pregnancy is evolving.

Of course it's possible, do not worry!!! At 5 weeks you only see the sac! But this is great, it means the pregnancy is where it's supposed to be!

Pouit · 08/07/2023 05:48

I went for an early scan at 6 weeks, was certain on dates but told that the sac was empty, measuring 5+3. 2 weeks later the fetus was visible and all was fine. Due dates later lined up with my expectations. It really could go either way. Hope all goes well for you.

Hi!!!

So, based on my LH surge (and ovulating that day) I would have been 6+3.
But we know LH surge means ovulation is 20-36 hours after… So there is potential for 2 days ish to be accounted for there then the actual journey of implantation I guess!!! It would have put me at exactly 6 weeks when I had a scan. I think I have about 3 days to play with…I am trying to hold onto this… 🙁 but I am feeling very unsure and preparing for the worst!!

Yea if only 6 weeks then empty sack wouldn't be anything to worry about, just to early 🙏

fingers crossed for you the next 2 weeks

applesandmares · 08/07/2023 08:55

I went for a scan at 6 weeks exactly (knowing when I ovulated and being pretty sure about when it implanted as I got my positive at 8DPO) - they saw a gestational sac and a yolk sac but no fetal pole and measured it at 5+4. Later on my dates caught up (and then some, they ended up going too far the other way 😂). Scans aren't a perfect science especially at that early stage. Good luck for your next scan!

Ems1992 · 08/07/2023 09:05

Thank you!!!
I feel deathly sick today so I am hoping I was just a bit early as in previous pregnancies by 6 weeks the sickness has taken over!!!
I know with blighted ovum’s you can still be nauseous though…. gosh if this all ends up being okay, what a rollercoaster! 😂🙄😳

OP posts:
Farangees2020 · 12/07/2023 11:49

I had bad cramps, very similar to period cramps starting yesterday evening at 6 and all through the night in addition to bleeding (no clots but like period bleeding) since then. Waiting to call EPU and get some advice but feel like this could be the end if the road for us 😔
the irony is we spend 4 yrs and 65k on ivf trying and no luck. 9 month after deciding to stop and accept our fate, I fell pregnant naturally! And at 42 this is truly the last chance. So feel annoyed with universe for putting us through this 😔

I’m so sorry to hear this!
Hopefully this is some bleeding and it will resolve, I am still in limbo, awaiting my private scan at the weekend. My sickness has increased dramatically over the past week though - have you felt nauseous?

OP posts:
Farangees2020 · 12/07/2023 14:14

Yes I've had nausea and sore boobs since week 4. Waiting for midwives call. Will let you know how it goes. The waiting is hell! 😔❤️

Ems1992 · 12/07/2023 14:48

Fingers crossed for you xx

Hope you both get good news. Everything crossed xx

Farangees2020 · 12/07/2023 21:25

Thank you 🤞🏼❤️

Farangees2020 · 13/07/2023 10:36

Had a scan this morning. They can see the baby, no heart beat yet but she said its small so not worried. Another scan in 1 week to check for the heart beat.
they didn't seem concerned with the cramps and the bleeding! 🤞🏼

Im 8weeks 2 days but the baby is smaller. So they are hoping they can hear heart beat next week 🤞🏼 good luck, keep busy and positive thoughts only even though its hard ❤️

According to my dates I was 7+ weeks - I had a scan and they had very similar findings to yours. A week later I was measuring 6 + 6 and the heartbeat was pulsing away! It'll be a long 2 weeks but its possible everything is absolutely fine!

Thanks so much for this… we’ve got through another week and I’ve had no bleeding or pain so I am hopeful! I will update on Saturday ❤️

Good luck! I had a scan at exactly 6w0d with DS and they calculated he was 5w??d (I can’t remember sorry). All you see is the sac that early. Here he is, he looked like an engagement ring! It’s easy to say and hard to do, but everything at that stage of pregnancy can mean a lot or absolutely nothing. I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

Early scan - empty gestational sac
Ems1992 · 15/07/2023 15:39

Bad news for me today - no features could be seen except the empty sac again so I will be awaiting my scan with EPU next week for what I will assume to be medical management x
