Had a early scan now I’m scared

Hiya all I had my scan yesterday now I’m terrified, I was 5 weeks 2 days they saw the gestation sac and yolk sac but no embryo and said they don’t know if the pregnancy just didn’t progress or that it’s to early. They re booked me for a week time at 6 weeks 2 days. Has anyone had this before I’m trying to stay positive 😢xx

All the Early scan places round here only do them from 6 weeks and most people I know who’ve had them waited until 8 weeks to have a more accurate result, so it really is very possible that yours was just too early. I hope everything will be well at your next scan 💐

LeopardLover · 03/07/2023 07:44

Sorry this is so stressful! From what I've heard it can be normal not to see one at 6 weeks too. With my first pregnancy I waited until 8 weeks because there's a higher chance of seeing a heartbeat. So hopefully you'll see the embryo next week but don't worry if there's no heartbeat that early xx

Elttek · 03/07/2023 07:51

yep only a geststional sac and yolk sac at 5+5 (going by ovulation) 6 weeks going by LMP, no fetal pole. They said it was completely normal at that stage and to go back in 2 weeks. Heartbeat and baby could be seen 2 weeks later

alittleadvicepls · 03/07/2023 08:00

I’m surprised you were scanned so early? Even the fertility specialist I went to last pregnancy wouldn’t scan women until 6 weeks. I definitely wouldn’t worry. That’s why they don’t scan this early- because you can’t see anything let alone see a heartbeat!

Nursemumma92 · 03/07/2023 08:15

Yes this is normal and they shouldn't have scanned you so early really as it's very common to not see anything this early. By all means go back in a week but after 8 weeks they will definitely get a clear view. A lot of these clinics are all about money making with no care for the anxious mum to be in question.
I do totally understand the worry though, i was the same with both of my pregnancies and had early scans at 6 and 7 weeks in both pregnancies due to bleeding but all was fine in the end.

Meganann · 03/07/2023 08:21

I’m just so worried now as had 2 previous losses but never had. Scan for them and then I got told that yesterday has made me more worried they booked me back for next Sunday when I’m over 6 weeks as they said they will be able to pick up a embryo I’m just worried x

was it a vaginal scan? even at 9 weeks I had to have one of those as I have a tilted uterus abd it was hard to see the baby

Meganann · 03/07/2023 08:39

I had a virginal scan, both sacks very seen easy just no embryo

YellowHatt · 03/07/2023 09:12

Was it a private scan? Were you having symptoms of a ectopic? Just trying to understand why they agreed to scan you so early (apart from the anxiety which I completely understand) because this is exactly why almost all places won’t.

At our Early Pregnancy Unit it’s at least 6 weeks, the Private Fertility Clinic wouldn’t scan until at least 7 weeks and the Private Scan place advised waiting til 8. Just because this is exactly the kind of horrible worry that can be caused by too early scans.

BOTH sacs? If you're having twins, that's perfectly normal as they tend to grow slightly behind and so probably wouldn't be seen at just over 5 weeks!

Meganann · 03/07/2023 10:33

this Might make it easier, and they saw me due to prior losses. Is it normal to not see embryo this early?

How certain are you on your dates? If they saw you due to prior losses then I think even more reason for them to wait until at least 6/7 weeks so that they don’t cause you the anxiety that comes from scanning too early and you having to “wait and see”. I’m honestly a bit cross at them for you and I don’t even know you!

If you google you‘ll read outcomes either way. But my advice, and I really hope you take it, is not to google and to instead focus on doing things that makes your week go fast. Make a list of lovely things you can do with your time instead of feeling anxious and work your way through them. Then next week will be here before you know it.

They didn't see an embryo/fetal pole for me at that stage- I went in at 6 weeks with brown/pink spotting. The invisible embryo is now kicking my bladder 🙈 obviously nobody can say one definitely will be visible next time, but it doesn't mean there won't be one.

PointyMcguire · 03/07/2023 12:19

Like others I’m surprised they scanned you so early, even with previous losses. This is exactly why most places won’t scan you until at least 6 weeks. Try not to worry, it’s completely normal not to see much at this stage.

Grumpigal · 03/07/2023 12:22

It’s very very early! You could easily be a few days out too, unless you know for absolute certainty when you ovulated (which none of us can do without scans!).

Let’s say you’re a couple of days out on olvuakon that could put you at just 5 weeks, which is actually only 3 weeks after conception. It’s totally possible that the pregnancy is progressing and that it’s just too early to see yet.

best of luck OP, I know it’s such a worrying time.

Just sending a hug.I have been there and know how stressful it is xx

Blisax · 03/07/2023 12:33

I've just been through the same OP, whilst mines didn't end positive.. I've seen a a good few positive stories & I'm keeping everything crossed for you
As previously said you could just be very early
All the love & hugs in the world 💖

CrotchetyQuaver · 03/07/2023 12:39

I would say try not to worry at this stage. I had early scans with both my pregnancies following an ectopic one. The whole point was to check there was something in the uterus. All that could be seen was a "bean", no heartbeat. Both scans would have been around 6 weeks. They're great big strapping things in their 20's now! I think it's normal not to see a heartbeat until after 6 weeks?

Meganann · 03/07/2023 13:15

When they measured me yesterday I was 5 weeks 2 days, we thought I was 6 weeks already. But they knew that I might be before 6 weeks and they still agreed to scan me and rebooked me for another next week that I have to pay for somehow too which I’m not happy about.

alittleadvicepls · 03/07/2023 13:32

If you were 5 weeks 2 days, I can tell you that I had no yolk and no fetal pole at 5w2d. I also went for a scan thinking I’d be 6.5w. I went back 10 days later and the little heart was beating away!

alittleadvicepls · 03/07/2023 13:35

This was my 5+2 scan.

yolk sac and gestation sac seem no embryo at 5 weeks 2 days.

FrostedFlake · 03/07/2023 14:59

@Meganann I had to go into the emergency room due to significant left hand side pain and they did an ultrasound at 5 weeks and could only see the yolk sac and gestational sac. I went back to my fertility clinic at 6 weeks and they could see the heartbeat only a week later. I think one week makes a huge difference so please don’t be disheartened.

InTheMiddleOfIt · 03/07/2023 15:10

It's so early. They've actually written. The reason for the scan was reassurance. I presume that means you requested the scan. Hopefully things will turn out okay this time but the only thing you can do is give it more time. I didn't count my pregnancies as a viable Until much later. It's really hard because you can't help hoping but you've just got to wait.

Pollywoddles · 03/07/2023 15:17

You’re much too early OP. Even IVF clinics don’t do their viability scans until 7 weeks and they know the dates exactly.

I mean this in the nicest possible way, because I have been in your shoes more than once, absolutely nothing you do right now will change the outcome. Today you are pregnant, try to relax and wait for another couple of weeks to scan again. Then you’ll have a definitive answer.
