Cervical length scan

Hey,

Anyone had a cervical length scan - internal? I'm having my first one tomorrow at 16+4, I'm worried about the pressure the scan will have on my cervix, or risk it may cause after.

Any experiences?

TIA

Hey OP, don’t worry- you’re clearly having one for a reason and the risk of not having one will outweigh the risk of having it. I had 4/5 in my 2nd pregnancy due to Lletz, I’d had a considerable amount of cervix removed. My cervix had shortened, i need progesterone pessaries and I was high risk of pre term labour. My consultant said I was lucky to get beyond 34 weeks, I got to 37 so did really well.

prayingformyrainbowbaby · 18/06/2023 20:09

Thank you, yes I had LLETTZ 8-9years ago but also a late loss in '21. Myself and OH aren't having sex, I don't want the risk of any damage to my cervix.

I have been put on progesterone 400mg once daily. Do you remember how short your cervix was, Did you need a stitch too?

Hi, I had them with my twins as I had previously had a very premature labour (24w) that sadly ended in neontal loss. My first scan was ok at 13 weeks then I had one at 17 weeks which was shorter but still ok, I went back 21 weeks, shorter still and back at 22 as it had shortened quite a lot- Then I was admitted from my 22 week one for a cervical stitch- It was very scary but I made 35 weeks with my twins who will be 10 in the autumn. It was totally worth doing as without the monitoring and the stich I would have most probably lost them too. I wouldn't worry about pressure on your cervix, They don't press right up against it as far as I remember, they are internal scans though ... slightly disconcerting when they put a condom on the probe!

clareykb · 18/06/2023 20:23

Mine was 23mm when I was about as far along as you are now and 13mm when I had my stitch put in which apparently was pretty bad.. worked though! I did have progesterone pessaries too but only later on.

I had the scans with my second pregnancy and had them with this one due to a Lletz treatment. I actually have my (hopefully) last one tomorrow. So far they have all been fine and not had to have any further procedures. They said it’s very common to have to have scans on your cervix but only a small percentage need to have further procedures so don’t worry about it.

The scan is internal so they do use a probe but it just scans your cervix so they can measure it, it doesn’t put any pressure on your cervix.

Sorry for your previous loss. I abstained from sex in both pregnancies and had regular cervical length scans, first time from 21 weeks, all internal and they picked up on my shortening cervix and were able to manage. The second time from 14 weeks up until 24 weeks and all fine that time. I understand your reservations, but it really is good that they are able to check this x

Laurag9027 · 26/07/2023 09:47

Hey I have my cervical scan today (18 weeks) do you see baby? Tia xx

prayingformyrainbowbaby · 26/07/2023 09:53

Just a follow up!

Yes briefly saw baby, they just showed me the heart beat and that's was it - still nice to see.

My first scan was at 16weeks 32-37mm. Second scan at 21 weeks 27-29mm, I have another scan in 10days to check the length again. Been told to take it easy! Stitch was mentioned if cervix is less than 25mm.

I have these scans as well due to previously shortening cervix in my previous pregnancy, And I am completely reassured that they do not put pressure on the cervix.
Also I just need to know the lengths for my own sanity so I feel the benefit outweighs the risk but my consultant is adamant internal scans do not cause risk to cervix.
I am 21 weeks now and still stable with progesterone only - but still so scary isn't 😥

Laurag9027 · 26/07/2023 17:18

had mine so just an update, my cervix length is 2.3cm so they’ve put me on progesterone pessaries for the next couple of weeks. Re scan a week today! So nervous as this is the furthest iv gotten in pregnancy others ended in loss. Just really hoping they help!
saw little one today very briefly moving away :) xxx

Lillybobs86 · 26/07/2023 20:09

@Laurag9027 I been only progesterone since about 14 weeks and they seemed to have really helped with mine so hopefully will work for you.
I started first 5 days on 800 a day and then down to 400 a day after that boost and my length has stabilised like a miracle x

prayingformyrainbowbaby · 26/07/2023 20:11

Fingers crossed the progesterone helps you. I have been on progesterone since my positive apart from week 15. Not sure if it just hasn't helped or it is helping and my cervix would be much shorter?

@prayingformyrainbowbaby what amount did they give you?

prayingformyrainbowbaby · 26/07/2023 20:31

I was on 400 twice drive until 14 weeks due to losses/infertility then a weeks break as I haven't seen my consultant and hosp werent sure. Restart 400 once daily from 15.5weeks, I'm 22 weeks tomorrow xx

Lillybobs86 · 26/07/2023 20:56

Oh ok, that's a shame it didn't help much hopefully it will stabilise it from here and not shorten anymore for you 🙏🏽

Laurag9027 · 29/07/2023 18:42

Fast forward couple of days, did anyone on these pessaries have more discharge? I just feel anxious.
also feeling a lot more movement from baby which is nice.
really worried for next scan hoping I don’t need the stitch xxx

prayingformyrainbowbaby · 29/07/2023 18:49

Yes white discharge, I put mine in before bed, so doesn't really leak until next day. When is your scan? Xx

OP posts:
Laurag9027 · 29/07/2023 18:51

I have to do one in morning and one at night, I don’t wake up with the discharge just through the day from the morning one (probably due to moving around)
my scan is Wednesday! Just hope it’s good news xxx

prayingformyrainbowbaby · 29/07/2023 19:22

Mine is only once daily now but yeah I had more when I was on twice.
Fingers crossed for you, my next scan is week on Monday xx

They were leaking out even when I went to lay down before bed and causing me extreme irritation and constant thrush so I switched to rectally which is so much better - No leaks and no irritation x

Laurag9027 · 30/07/2023 07:08

Good luck aswell! It’s such a scary anxious time. Praying this works for us both xxx

Laurag9027 · 30/07/2023 07:09

We don’t have it easy do we haha how far along are you and how are you getting on? Xxx

Lillybobs86 · 30/07/2023 09:46

@Laurag9027 I know it's hard and a lot we need to do through but will be worth it in the end ❤️
I am 22 weeks now which is where they discovered extreme shortening in my previous pregnancy so I get so scared.
Being monitored every 2 weeks - last weeks cervical length scan showed no change and cervix was still at a good length which is an absolute miracle so I think the progesterone is amazing and works wonders.
They were planning to do a stitch earlier but they wanted to see changes so I didn't get a stitch.
What about you how many weeks are you now? X

Laurag9027 · 30/07/2023 10:08

oh that’s great news it hasn’t changed! I’ll be 19 weeks on Wednesday when it’s my next scan xxx

Laurag9027 · 02/08/2023 09:55

had appointment this morning, think it’s positive. No change in cervix still measuring 2.3 on shortest measure, no funnelling, back again in a week. Is this promising? Still worried haha dr said no need for the stitch as not lowered going to keep on pogesterone and scan weekly xx
