Not sure if waters have gone or if it’s pee?

I’m 40 weeks, I just woke up to liquid dripping down my bum, im no stranger to leaking pee since my third trimester but usually when I leak pee in my sleep I wake up needing to pee this time I didn’t need to pee I don’t want to go to hospital because I would die from embarrassment if it was pee, my baby isn’t engaged yet anyway so unlikely it’s waters? It was clear liquid, and when I touched it it felt kind of greasy?

If it's your waters it won't stop. It'll just keep coming. Maybe put a pad on and give it half an hour.

CoronationQuiche · 08/05/2023 09:09

I would personally go in and ask for it to be checked. Better to know. They won’t care if it’s wee - they’ll want to be sure too. My waters broke in just the way you described. I wasn’t sure and called the maternity ward, they said didn’t sound enough to be waters but when I did go in to be checked all my waters has gone. I only ever had a trickle, never a gush.

CornishGem1975 · 08/05/2023 09:10

Put a pad on and see what colour and smell it is? When this happened to me at my due date I called and they told me to come in and they checked.

Spockrates · 08/05/2023 09:15

Hi @CornishGem1975 it was clear and odourless but I’m very well hydrated so my pee is always nearly clear anyway 😂 whenever I leak pee in my sleep it’s never enough to actually wet the bed or get onto the sheets but this time there was a small wet patch on the sheet doesn’t smell like anything either

Sounds like worth a trip to maternity unit to get it checked out.

Bumblebeebum23 · 08/05/2023 09:21

I had similar with both my babies. Waters started trickling rather than fully going. I was monitored overnight and then induced because of the risk of infection. At the very least I would go and get checked over xx

User17753 · 08/05/2023 09:21

This happened to me - my waters broke with a very small hole and I didn't go into labour. i thought I slightly peed myself twice before going home get checked.
They were broken for 24h by the time I went up hospital so I had to go on IV antibiotics. Just go in! They had to monitor me for about 1-2hours with my legs up over some tinfoil before they confirmed the waters were broken. It's not easy to tell with a small break! Go go go!! And good luck!

This isn't correct, my waters broke partially and stopped. The hospital didn't even believe me until I demanded a scan 24 hours later and then they went into panic mode trying to induce me🤦🏼‍♀️

Ttcmumma · 08/05/2023 09:22

Waters often have a slightly sweet smell x

Prettypaisleyslippers · 08/05/2023 09:31

My waters smell reminded me of condoms, hospital said spermicide smell.

Give a while and if you can have a dance, girate hips

Spockrates · 08/05/2023 10:13

@User17753 can’t I just wait to see to labour comes? It’s been a couple of hours and I’ve only just now started to feel a trickle again but not enough to leak down my bum again LOL I have been laying down tho I would die from embarrassment if I went and they told me it was pee!!

Newuser82 · 08/05/2023 10:19

I'd certainly go and get checked out. Simply because the risk of infection is high if it is your waters and you wait. Good luck!!

After 24 hours of waters broken the risk to you and baby becomes very high. You could be risking both your lives by not getting checked

bunnyrabbitsandbutterflies · 08/05/2023 10:29

@Ttcmumma oh wow sorry not heard of that before. Have always been advised if it's clear and continual then it's waters. Prob best the OP gets checked out then.

I think it's rare as my doctors didn't even believe me. It's dependant on positioning of baby. I was 37 weeks 5 days when they broke so abit early anyway but when they scanned I think it was about 80% of his waters had gone but there was some trapped behind him from the position he was in. It massively affected his heart rate and they told me I peed myself for 24 hours until I shouted at them that I did not pee myself. It happened in my sisters brand new car, I didn't even feel it come out I just suddenly felt wet and the car still didn't smell of pee even the next day so that's when they finally scanned me 🙄. I had all the tests done besides scan before that and they found no trace of amniotic fluid. So it's definitely possible x

emzbear · 08/05/2023 10:37

Hi op it does sound a bit like waters, if you ring the midwife's they will likely tell you to pop a pad on and wait and see if it is. Do some squats and move around a bit to see if anymore comes out.

However it's easy to get checked and they will be used to doing this so don't be embarrassed at all.

Surely a bit of potential embarrassment is better than doing nothing and risking the health of you and your baby? Go and get it checked! Honestly, if it is pee it’s nothing the midwives and doctors won’t have seen before but if it is your waters at least they can check all is well.

KittyTypesCat · 08/05/2023 11:17

My waters broke with both DC, the first they gushed just lije on TV. But the 2nd they trickled just as you describe. The weird feeling of "am I peeing or is this my waters?" I was told gushing is the fore-waters, ahead of the baby, but leaking is the hind-waters, behind the baby. Yes you should speak to the midwives or go in. They'll probably just do a few checks to ensure there is no immediate risk + send you home for 24hrs anyway. As I recall, hind waters are less likely to start labour off so start getting your head around you may be induced. Good luck

Spockrates · 08/05/2023 11:23

@emzbear i don’t have any thin enough pads I just have the really thick maternity ones that I don’t want to wear because u can see the shape of them through my clothes 😂there is little droplets coming now slightly tinged maybe pink? The colour is very slight I put some tissue in my underwear to see

You need to go in op. Call the midwife now.

ChickpeaPie · 08/05/2023 12:22

Don’t listen to everyone panicking that you need to go in. Give your midwife a call. Note the time of when you think your waters went. Depending on hospital policy they will arrange to see you at some point today and offer induction after 24 hours if you haven’t gone into labour. If your pregnancy and history are straightforward, baby is moving like normal and your waters are clear or a light pink then you don’t need to go rushing into hospital

SaltyGod · 08/05/2023 12:23

My waters went in the night, so I left it until the morning and I was told off for not going in to be checked, I didn't know I should.

There is a higher risk of infection and a risk to you and your baby.

I had a friend who nearly lost her baby due to an undiagnosed infection, they ended up knocking her out and doing an emergency c section.

Not to scare you, but you can't take chances and the last thing you should be worried about is the thickness of your pad.

Call them up, explain, and go in if they ask you to. Chances are you'll have your baby with you very soon.

Thewitcherswolf · 08/05/2023 12:27

This happens all the time OP. Just call labour & delivery at the hospital and say you think your waters might have broken but you’re not sure and could they check? You properly won’t even need to say you’re worried it might just be pee. The midwives will know that’s the other possibility anyway.

MakesMeFeelSad · 08/05/2023 12:33

Call the labour ward , hind waters can trickle like this and you won't necessarily go into labour. Happened with my 2nd at 34 weeks, they didn't want to induce that early so I had an antibiotic drip for 48 hours , went home and didn't go into labour for a week so I wouldn't leave it in the hope labour will start.

Dammitthisisshit · 08/05/2023 12:40

Mine also went with a tiny trickle and the hospital didn’t believe me as they said there would be loads. But I know it wasn’t pee. They also said it would could be my mucus plug. Definitely wasn’t that either.
It started my labor so I had to go in anyway but best to call and check.
