Heavy bleeding 9 weeks pregnant, scan ok- positive stories welcome

Hi there,

I’m 9 weeks and 4 days pregnant by IVF and hoping for some positive stories. I started spotting last Thursday, it was brown and very light but I thought it was good to get it checked so I went to the early pregnancy unit and had a scan. The scan was good and the baby had a strong heartbeat. They said to come back if it gets worse.

On Monday it got a lot heavier, but it was still brown. It was the bank holiday so I couldn’t get a scan at the EPU, so I got a private scan, again everything was fine and I felt very relieved. When I spoke to the doctor they said to worry if it’s red and gushing, but brown is fine.

Come Wednesday, I had heavy red bleeding which filled a sanitary towel in just over an hour and lasted a few hours, I got scanned again and everything was fine, I couldn’t believe it. It’s now back to dark brown spotting again.

I’ve had so many scans now, but I’m just so so worried and they can’t find any reason for the bleeding. Has anyone had a similar experience but had a positive outcome? Would love to know.

I had an ivf pregnancy and a bright red bleed at 9 weeks which seemed heavy and I was absolutely terrified I was losing the baby. I had scans and everything was fine. The bleeding settled (after some brown bleeding) and I now have a gorgeous son. They didn’t know the cause for me either but it all turned out ok.

I’m currently 9 weeks and have been bleeding for over 2 weeks. Same as you really, started of as light pink/ brown then red now back to brown. Have had two scans at EPU and all is well, baby is growing and heartbeat was visualised. They cant explain exactly why im bleeding as everything seemed normal in the scans but said it might be due to hormonal changes or irritation in the cervix.

Kickingupmerrybehaviour · 04/05/2023 21:52

Yes my similar experience is in her cot currently. It can be absolutely fine.

beccahamlet · 04/05/2023 21:54

I had a bleed heavier thank a heavy period at 12 weeks. All fine in the end.

IttyBittyTittyCommittee · 04/05/2023 21:57

I bled on and off from around 9-10 weeks right up to about 7 months along. Was frequently scanned, no issues flagged up. The consultant said that he was active in the womb so may well have been bumping/ kicking the placenta, and the bleeding stopped as he grew, because he was taking up the spare space in the womb.
Arrived 4 days early, 7lbs 5oz, is 37 now and fine!
Hope all goes well for you OP💐

I had this from 6 weeks until around 12 weeks. Bright red blood. Baby was fine! Its called a haematoma and they're very common apparently

Bottleopener88 · 04/05/2023 22:02

Hey - this happened almost exactly to me (though not an IVF pregnancy). After a load of smaller bleeds, I had a terrifying huge bleed at 9 weeks - including big clots - but the scan was fine, and everything totally well. No explanation at all. My theory is that the progesterone pesseries I was put on after an early bleed and previous miscarriage caused it by irritating my cervix - are you on these? I switched to using them as suppositories after that… and didn't have another bleed. Hopefully all will be well for you too - but if they can’t find an explanation from the scan, your cervix is probably the culprit. Ask your doctor, GP or midwife to have a look for you (I wish I had done this just to get an answer)

SkyBlue20 · 04/05/2023 22:07

I had similar - brown turned in to red and it lasted from around 12 weeks to 19ish weeks. Turns out my placenta was low and causing it. By the time of my 20 week scan, it had moved up and I’ve not had any bleeding since (am 28 weeks now). Sending lots of positive vibes your way - sounds like all is good at the moment so try your hardest to focus on that x

I had a heavy bleed at 3 months, coupled with fainting and feeling dreadful. My baby was fine and I never found out why. I do think it is worth resting, putting your feet up, avoid stress, eat healthy, drink water and avoid caffeine. I do hope all continues fine for you, it does seem quite common. I was given IV fluids in hospital which made me feel better so maybe dehydration is worth keeping an eye on?

@Springbud I've been here, scaring myself reading all the horror stories and desperately seeking the good news stories.
I'm not pregnant through IVF but from 6 weeks pregnant I had red blood bleeding, (more than spotting, less than a period) spoke to EPAU Tuesday and they scanned me on Friday
There was a heartbeat and I have never felt relief like it (our 1st pregnancy didn't progress past 6 weeks MMC)
The very next day blood was running down my legs I was 1000% sure that was it.
We booked a private scan and there was still a heartbeat. I couldn't believe it.
I continued to bleed after probably for 2.5 / 3 weeks after, heavier than at the beginning but nothing like the big bleed. Then Ive had the occasional pink when I wipe (I had 6 scans before my 12 week NHS, 2EPAU the others private)
I'm 14 weeks and at my NHS scan they've deemed me as a low risk pregnancy and have no idea why I bleed.
I hope everything is okay for you, crossing everything. If you can afford it just go for private scans if it puts your mind at ease it was the only way for me xx

Had similar until about 13 weeks, v scary and worrying. Currently bf my healthy happy 6 month old :)

Verigio · 04/05/2023 23:29

my sister had three heavy bleeds scattered throughout her pregnancy- my niece is 4 now!

PinkButtercups · 04/05/2023 23:31

Sorry you're bleeding it's so scary!

I bled at 12 weeks with DS bright red too. He's 4 this year and there was no reason for the bleeding. She said if sometimes just happens and there is no known reason for the bleeding.

I spotted with my twins at 8 weeks and they're 5 months old now. Again, no one knew why!

Congratulations on your pregnancy x

Thank you so much everyone. I can’t tell you much I appreciate you all sharing your positive stories. It was the first thing I read when I woke up and I just feel so much more positive now, I’m going to keep coming back to these when I’m feeling worried xxx

@Bottleopener88 it’s funny you say that, because a few days before it all started I’d had a sort of allergic reaction down there to cyclogest and so they switched me to oral tablets instead. The doctor looked at my cervix and said it looked all ok, but then they can’t see it in my womb either, so it has to come from somewhere! Glad everything turned out well for you xxx

@autumn94xxxx glad your scans have all been good! From the stories above it sounds like it’s more common than I thought xxx

@Mrsstart that sounds so stressful! Brilliant that they’ve classified you as a low risk pregnancy. It’s so easily to search and find all the scary stories, but so lovely to read the positive ones! I hope the rest of the pregnancy is a little less stressful for you <3

I have twins. I started bleeding at 14 weeks. One of the placentas was low lying and there was a slight tear. I pretty much had to go on bed rest afterwards. If I walked more than about 30 feet in a day I would start to bleed and there was always brown blood. About six months in I had to do a bit more due to a doctor's appointment and a cup of blood just gushed out of me. I just took it easy again and went to full term. Usually a low lying placenta moves up as preganancy progresses, mine stayed low and eventually covered the cervix so had to have a c-section. Babies were born healthy though.

Springbud · 05/05/2023 08:38

I think that’s a good idea @8state, I haven’t been drinking as much as I’d like because of nausea, but I think that’s a nice problem to have! So will rest up and increase my water intake! Thank you! X

@DemonicCaveMaggot ah I’m so glad everything turned out well for you, I do think resting all yesterday has helped, so will continue! Xx

I also had heavy bleeding immediately after my 12 wel scan, had another scan a few days later and all was well but I was losing blood, big clots and it was very scary, it slowed down and by about 5-6 weeks later was old and brown/black blood. Baby was fine, she's 14 now - good luck and the main thing is the scan was good !

Onlycheeseontoast · 05/05/2023 14:31

Hello, firstly I’m so sorry to hear this because I can totally understand the level of anxiety. It’s so consuming isn’t it?

I bled all the way through the first trimester, mainly spotting with 2 heavier bleeds - one was after a long haul flight at 12 weeks and the other was after sex at 14 weeks and was so heavy I had to go back home and change. It’s terrifying, and is always worth getting checked out, but doesn’t always mean anything is wrong.

Sending you all the good energy x

Springbud · 07/05/2023 14:25

Thanks again everyone, I keep reading these stories to calm me, this thread is my go to! I’m sorry you all went through this, but it’s reassuring to know it can last a while and still be ok- I’m still bleeding dark brown but this makes me feel more positive. Thanks for all the good energy and well wishes!

@autumn94xxxx how are you getting on?

Thanks @Onlycheeseontoast, it is terrifying and definitely all consuming, I can’t seem to think about anything else! Appreciate the good vibes.

@Mrsstart I’ve taken your advice and booked a private scan for Tuesday afternoon, I just really need the reassurance! I’ll also have had 6 scans before 12 weeks!

Xxxxx

@Springbud hope everything goes well, let us know how you get on.
How has it been since. Xx

MotherOfCatBoy · 07/05/2023 16:32

Not me, but a work colleague, had heavy bleeding around that time and was convinced she was miscarrying. She wasn’t, and her daughter was fine. Happened with her second pregnancy as well. Her kids are now 14 and 12.
