19/20 week ultrasound - unable to detect Cavum septum pellucidum (CSP),

Hi all

I’m hoping you might be able to help. I’m 19+1 weeks with a baby boy and went for my 20 week scan today (as I’m away next week). The baby wasn’t positioned in a way for the sonographer to see the CSP very well and after reading about it I’m extremely worried. I had the harmony NIPT test done at 10 weeks which showed I had a 1/10,000 chance of chromosomal abnormalities. Has anyone else been through this before? They have said they will see me again on Friday but I’m really worried - will 2 days really change anything? I tried doing squats, star jumps, jiggling, went for a walk etc to get the baby to move so that it could be seen but the sonographer was still struggling. Has anyone else been through this? internally freaking out

appreciate your support so much, always. X

If they still struggle to see it than ask for an MRI , it will provide more information. And don't worry !

AfterGlow87 · 26/04/2023 20:44

If they’re saying it’s positional then I’d try not to be too worried - the baby’s position plus other factors like the mums BMI etc can make seeing all of that small detail very difficult. I’m a sonographer and have only not been able to see an absent CSP once (and I’ve done thousands of scans) so it’s quite rare. Fingers crossed the baby will change position for you! I had to bring 2 women back today for follow up scans due to the baby’s position

Np1988 · 27/04/2023 03:42

Thank you for replying , it is reassuring to know you are a sonographer too. I can’t help but think that maybe they are just saying it’s down to position to make me feel better? She called in a colleague too to check. They were saying the baby was throwing his head back too much so they couldn’t see. I’m going back early tomorrow morning but have been Googling all sorts (I know this is so bad) but this pregnancy hasn’t been easy so far, has been such a shock and I’m really kicking myself now. I’m away from Monday too and don’t know how I’ll cope if there is an issue whilst away.

Hello, I was just wondering what your outcome was if you're comfortable sharing? We are in the same position at the moment after our 20 week scan

Np1988 · 09/11/2023 23:41

Hey my love I’m so sorry to hear you are in the same position. Did you have your scan earlier than 20 weeks? Mine was about 5 days before the 20 week mark as I was going away, they asked us to come back 2 days later to reassess and said ‘I think I’m happy with that’. But we still booked a private scan for our return 2 weeks later and she could see the CSP very clearly straight away. Apparently it is quite common to not be visible if the baby isn’t positioned well. I know this doesnt give you all the answers and I really hope you and baby are ok xx

Thank you so much for getting back to me, yes we had it just before 20 weeks and she mentioned positioning was difficult but I have been back last week to fetal medicine where 2 consultants scanned me plus I had a TV scan and they are still concerned. They think they can convince themselves they can see it but still not sure. What they’ve said is because I’m thin it should be easy so why can’t they just see it. I have had an amnio and waiting for those results and have an MRI next week so should have results by 23 weeks. The waiting is horrible but we have been in a similar position before and last year we sadly had to have a termination for medical reasons and said goodbye to our much wanted baby (but a different issue that time). I’m pleased it worked out for you and I know there’s hope it could all be ok but my mind has gone straight to the worst having been what we went through x

At 16 weeks it’s hard to see. Usually they don’t check that until 20 weeks I was told because the view isn’t great until then. I went at 19 weeks as was going to be away and even going one week earlier meant they couldn’t see it clearly I had to go back and then it was super clear. Try not to worry, 16 weeks is def too early I think xxx

Hello NP1988 - sorry I should have come back here to post with positive news! Our amnio came back clear and then got the MRI results back at 23 weeks and by a miracle that was all good too and they could see the CSP! I was in utter shock and burst into tears when I got the news and felt like I’d only just found out I’d been pregnant as hasn’t realised how much I was blocking out during the first part of this pregnancy. They said he was measuring a bit small (but I am small too) so I’m getting growth scans each month but had one last week and he’s looking all good size wise now. Im now 29 weeks and finally have been able to relax into this pregnancy and enjoy it more. Our 4 year old has been so cute recently getting excited. After a rough year with our loss fingers crossed we get our rainbow in spring :)

sunandnature · 03/01/2024 22:00

Hello Nat2903 - just wanted to add that at that early stage it’s normal not to see the csp. It’s supposed to be visible from 18 weeks onwards. Have you spoken to your midwife or a consultant for reassurance? If they didn’t mention any concern at the scan I wouldn’t be worried but please speak to someone about it x

elliejjtiny · 03/01/2024 22:04

My son has the opposite problem. He still had his CSP last time he had an MRI aged 6 years old (he is 10 now). I can't remember when it's supposed to close, sometime around birth to 6 months I think.

Np1988 · 03/01/2024 23:39

Sending you lots of positive vibes and love!! For me limited view meant due to babies positioning and the fact that he wasn’t developed enough in terms of gestational age. Please eat, I know how stressful it is I have been there too but your baby needs the nutrients from you to grow xx

Nat2903 · 06/01/2024 12:37

Your the only person that I have heard that had limited views so it does not mean absent? I am so scared crying all the time my 19 week scan is 16th please prey for me and keep reassuring me

Nat2903 · 06/01/2024 15:22

And it says view on baby was satisfactory so wasn't cause of position that's what else scaring me

sunandnature · 06/01/2024 21:35

Hi Nat2903, I had partial views on my 20 week scan and was referred straight away to fetal medicine for further investigation. If they were worried they would have referred you. Like we’ve said it’s normal not to see the csp before 18 weeks so if they’ve seen partial views it is probably still developing. At our latest scan at 28 weeks it’s very clear. Please speak to a medical professional rather than waiting for your next scan if you are unable to eat and ask them for reassurance, call your midwife or speak to the hospital where your scan took place to discuss your notes

Nat2903 · 07/01/2024 07:57

It was a fetal medicine lady that scanned me, and wrote down limited views but said everything looks fine, I don't no what to think it driving me crazy
