It’s a 6 week scan one…

I’ve been to EPU for a scan today, due to being on cyclogest because of recurrent miscarriage.
By my LMP I would be 6+2.

Sonographer could see a sac, and a yolk sac. No fetal pole. There was also a bleed near the sac, it looked big on screen, she said 2cm. She said measured more like 5 and a half weeks. Cervix looked nice and closed. I’m to go back in 10 days to see if anything’s progressing, if I haven’t miscarried by then. I haven’t had any bleeding, I have had quite a lot of lower back ache which I don’t remember in other pregnancies. She said keep taking the cyclogest.

I could have ovulated a bit later, but should I expect the worst? I’m not a newbie to miscarriage and I feel I can cope with whatever happens, at least it’s early. Just looking for others similar experiences?

So slightly different story but one that might involve hope here.
I had pains and suspected ectopic. Went to a and e but the wouldn't scan be as I wasn't 6 weeks yet. Basically before 6 weeks they weren't certain they would see what they needed too.

It's possible that your dates are slightly wrong and that's why HB is not visible yet along with fetal pole.

This could go either way in all honesty and I'm sorry you're having to wiat to find out which way. The bleeding could be a common bleed that can happen in early pregnancy an usually does not affect the pregnancy but can cause scary bleeding.

Rationally if it is a MC like you said its early and most likely bodies way of saying something wasn't quite right. That's not to diminish the fact that it's upsetting regardless. I had a MC when I didn't even know i was pregnant and that was still heartbreaking.

Fingers crossed for you

Thank you for sharing your story. I’m sure of my dates but could definitely have ovulated later, but the potential discrepancy of like ?6 days seems a stretch. I wonder do they ever start slowly and then catch up?! I think if there hadn’t been the patch of bleeding too, I’d have more hope.

Was it an internal scan?
You're right to be cautious and not get your hopes up. Have you had any pain or bleeding or was the scan because of the medication only?

Bug84 · 06/04/2023 14:54

Yep firstly abdominal and she could see the sac, then she could see the yolk when she did it internally. No bleeding (for once, I’m usually plagued with it 😂) - maybe that’s the cyclogest doing its job. No pelvic pain really aside from the usual twinges. I have got lower back ache though, I’ve had it on and off since I had a positive test.

sorry yes the scan was requested by my GP, because of the cyclogest - an early scan was advised by the consultant who prescribed it (from recurrent miscarriage clinic).

Hey,
I went to EPU with bleeding and had a scan at 6+3 (internal scan and abdominal) and they couldn't even see a yolk or fetal pole or anything. Literally just the sack which looked smaller for my dates. They said it was a blight ovum or miscarriage impending.
Went back 10 days later to confirm loss and there he was and my dates were exact to what I thought.

I saw a different sonographer and she said earlier than 10 weeks they are common mistakes as they are literally millimeters big. They can be easily missed by shadowing/fluid and womb structure.

Have hope. I have everything crossed for you xx

I don't think abdominal would have been strong enough to pick up at your predicted dates tbh.
I don't want to give false hope but I was under the impression that it's routine to do transvaginal before 8 weeks. Any potential baby is less that a grain of rice at your point

I am in a very similar situation, having had 4 miscarriages within the year. I was prescribed progesterone, have had such terrible Lower back pain, but no other symptoms of anything being wrong ( so clinging onto hope ) I am waiting to go next week to get my first early scan to make sure all is ok !

I remember my first miscarriage I have an internal scan and I had a bleed near the pregnancy and the gynaecologist told me, it was basically a waiting game, to see if I miscarried or not. I sadly miscarried a week later.

you really never know how these things will turn out, can only hope and pray. It is fairly common in early pregnancy to have a bleed and not then miscarry however this was not the case for me.

I know how difficult it can be, it’s the waiting and researching and just overall anxiety ! But try rest, the good news is they have seen what they needed and maybe it still to early ! Praying for you, and sending lots of love xo

Thanks everyone 🤍

Praying hard for you … nothing really to add except im in a similar position been put back 5 days and waiting for a rescan. Lots of posts about your dates catching up at the 12 week scan which is reassuring.
similar to you I’ve have 4 reoccurant mc, it’s the not knowing, the wait, the hope, the anxiety.
we just have to wait it out. It’s the only way.

Bug84 · 06/04/2023 16:55

Hope you are ok @LethargicButAwesome hope your next scan is positive

Had v similar experience to you. Have now a 6 month old baby. The 10 day wait is so tough. Don’t give up hope! 6 weeks is so so early! Best of luck!

GH9687 · 06/04/2023 22:53

It's almost impossible to know exactly how far along you are. Even when you are taking ovulation tests, that only tells you when you ovulated, it doesn't pin point when conception happened or implantation.

I've had something very similar, I know I ovulated between the 3rd/4th march, but when I went to EPU for a scan last week they only put me in-between 5 and 6 weeks when I thought I'd be atleast 6 weeks. They weren't concerned and as others have said, everything is so tiny at this point it's difficult to measure with such precision, which is why they don't give you a due date until your 12 weeks dating scan.

It's such a difficult waiting game and I can totally relate, I conceived this pregnancy immediately after my last miscarriage in February but I think it's important to remember that we have very little control at the point, I just focus on controlling the controllables, so getting plenty of sleep, lots water, good food and my pre natals.

sugarspices · 06/04/2023 22:57

I had a scan at 6 weeks (from LMP) due to a previous ectopic and they saw a gestational sac and yolk sac (no fetal pole) but it was enough to know it wasn't ectopic. They dated it 5+5.

I paid for a private scan at 8 weeks and all was fine!

When you're that early, days can make a huge difference and everything is so tiny it might not be picked up yet!

Now 32 weeks pregnant ✨

LethargicButAwesome · 10/04/2023 22:18

@GH9687 sounds like a very level headed sensible approach wish I could share your calm

Bug84 · 17/04/2023 09:01

How’s everyone doing? Just had the follow up scan and it was positive, I’m so shocked! I’d had some spotting over the last week so was certain it would be bad news. Baby with a heartbeat measuring 7+4 so has caught up in those 10 days. Subchorionic hematoma in there of about 2.5cm so I guess that’s where the spotting has come from. Not going to get excited as I know all too well how it can go wrong, my last mc was a MMC at 14 weeks. But for now, I’ll take the small win 😊

Awww that’s lovely to hear :) really pleased for you.

I have mine tomorrow hope it’s positive like you!!

That's amazing news @Bug84 finger crossed

LethargicButAwesome · 17/04/2023 13:49

Thanks @Bug84 really nervous can’t concentrate at work today, need it to be tomorrow already!

developing some pg symptoms however so that’s promising - although having a lot of drugs…soooo not entirely convinced yet.

try and stay positive! I know it’s hard with a late loss at 13 weeks… was it a missed miscarriage or did you miss art at 13 weeks?

Bug84 · 17/04/2023 15:51

That’s a good sign 🙂 what drugs are you on? I’m on cyclogest, then aspirin from 10 weeks if I make it that far 🤞🏻

It was a missed miscarriage, I had some light spotting at just before 15 weeks and went for a scan, baby had died around 13.5 weeks. I’d had a good 12 week scan etc. I had surgical management at what would have been just before 16 weeks. It was grim but I’m lucky to have two dc already. Feels almost a bit reckless trying again but here we are! Will see how it goes.

Really sorry to hear about your loss. That sounds awful…especially when you really start getting your hopes up! Hope this one is more fruitful

im on chclogest, tinzaparin and aspirin daily.

Bug84 · 20/04/2023 18:59

Thank you. How did your scan go?

OP posts:
DaisyMay25 · 21/04/2023 06:51

@Bug84 I've had two previous miscarriages, one at six weeks then a mmc at 10 weeks, I've requested cyclones from my gp for this pregnancy (only 4 weeks +2 days) should I be requesting an early scan too??

3ofus3 · 21/04/2023 06:56

I had a 6 week scan (they wouldn't scan me till then) they seen sac but had to come back in 2 weeks time as it was to early. The wait was awful! He's 1 year old now.
I wish you all the best x
