Pregnant and ovary cyst

SarahHewitt · 27/03/2023 15:59

I’m 6 weeks 4 days had some slight sharp pain on right side but only last a second then goes (normal the time infrequent) however I contacted my early pregnancy clinic told them about it and to double check they asked me to come in for a scan.

baby is fine heart beating and bang on time 6 weeks 4 days. But the person doing the ultrasound mentioned I had a medium size cyst on my right ovary and that would explain the twinges I have felt occasionally. It’s nothing to do with the pregnancy. The early pregnancy unit told me just mention it at my 12 week scan and she told me to get back dressed and left the room there was not really any explanation to this other than when she was scanning saying sometimes this happens after ovulation etc. my main concerns can it affect the pregnancy and with her saying medium size it must be a fair size not a tiny cyst. Just wondering if anyone been in this situation or any knowledge on this? Thanks x

I think it's quite normal, I have a cyst and am pregnant. They weren't concerned. They come and go...

TeaandHobnobs · 27/03/2023 16:31

Most likely a corpus luteum cyst, it is harmless and forms to support the pregnancy initially, but will go as the placenta takes over. I had one in my first pregnancy and it caused me quite a bit of pain around 6-8 weeks, but went away with no issue.

SarahHewitt · 27/03/2023 17:33

@bigbillybobhowler are they monitoring it? The early pregnancy unit just said to me to mention it at the 12 weeks scan

I had three the size of oranges, nothing happened, they were gone at the 20w scan. Don’t worry until you need to.

SarahHewitt · 27/03/2023 17:35

@TeaandHobnobs ah ok you have one too? I think the only thing concerned me not that it was a cyst but that it was a medium size cyst (so not tiny or small). I have just read about the cyst and progesterone etc. did they tell you how big yours was and when did it go away? X

It’s probably a functional cyst, OP. I had one in early pregnancy. Their appearance has something to do with ovulation/last menstruation (I can’t quite remember) and they resolve on their own. They should monitor this and see how you’re looking at your 12 week scan (should be gone by 14-16 weeks and if it’s not, they just continue monitoring… cross that bridge if you ever come to it). Congratulations on your pregnancy!

TeaandHobnobs · 27/03/2023 18:17

Yes I had one - I think it got to the size of a satsuma maybe? I can’t remember, it was a very long time ago! But it went away with no concerns - pretty sure it had gone by 12 week scan.
I didn’t have one in my second pregnancy

Lovemusic33 · 27/03/2023 18:19

I had them with both pregnancy’s and was told it’s pretty normal and happens because of hormone changes, they tend to disappear after a while, I don’t think they showed up on the 20w scan.

bigbillybobhowler · 27/03/2023 18:32

They aren't monitoring it, I've had so many of them now I'm not worried about them. They go away on their own or reappear, I wouldn't worry.

Monstermunchmum · 27/03/2023 18:46

i had a large cyst on my right ovary that only got found when I thought I went into labour. They could not see it on the scan as it was hiding. I had a c section due to the mystery pain, and then they found it. They removed it and part of my fallopian tube, all in one go, so I didn’t have to have further surgery. Mine was obviously an extreme case, but I am well , fine and in good health and most importantly my bubba was just perfect too! It all worked out well, but they should monitor you!!

1000yellowdaisies · 27/03/2023 18:56

I had a dermoid cyst on my right ovary that was picked up on a private scan at about 10 weeks. They referred to it as a medium sized cyst when it was the size of a grapefruit. i thought 'bloody medium! sounds massive to me!' but i suppose they see them much larger...
They generally do not affect the pregnancy in any way. I asked the question many times and was told, doesn't affect anything, baby will be fine...
They took mine out during c section... did not affect pregnancy in anyway except i had to have a few more scans which i quite liked anyway :)

Anjie80 · 27/03/2023 22:52

I have a large (11.5cm) cyst on my left ovary and while it's not causing me much pain they said they would just keep an eye and give me extra scans

SarahHewitt · 28/03/2023 12:49

I’m reading all the comments thank you it’s really insightful. I just wish the person doing the scan would have given me this much detail. It just worried me when she said medium sized cyst, but I was so preoccupied that the baby was ok which all that was fine “in the right position” and had a heartbeat. The person doing the scan had asked had I had previous scan before this one i said no (probably she was trying to figure did I know about the cyst) but I forgot I did have a ultrasound last April and there was no mention of any cyst and the ovaries looked normal , so this must of happened more recently - then the lady doing the scan said something about it can occur after ovulation etc but again I wish she would of spent more time with me to explain it. I will update everyone for sure - but for now based on the comments it’s wait and see and I just hope it shrinks aslong as it doesn’t harm the baby that’s all I’m bothered about and it’s nothing I need to be very concerned over x

@Anjie80 did you get any symptoms with yours? Any bleeding or pain or anything like that? - all I have is a twinge every now and then on the right side.
I telephoned to ask what size it was mine in the scan and they said it’s 4 x 5cm

OP posts:
SarahHewitt · 28/03/2023 14:23

@1000yellowdaisies that is positive to know thank you. Wow that was quite big but positive that it didn’t affect your pregnancy. Did you experience any symptoms from it?

Anjie80 · 28/03/2023 22:00

I do get pain from time to time but nothing major I also had a bleed around 11 weeks but when I went to early pregnancy unit they couldn't see where the bleed came from

Ichosetheredpill · 28/03/2023 22:11

I had a smallish cyst with DS. A few twinges but no problem at all. By the time I had DD it had grown to the size of a tennis ball. They monitored it through the pregnancy and removed it with my ovary during a planned C-section (which I would have had anyway). I had no problems with it. They were a bit worried about it twisting during the later stages of pregnancy but if it does, they can operate provided baby is over a certain age. Pregnancy hormones can make them grow fast so don’t be surprised if it does. Don’t worry too much and don’t let it spoil your pregnancy.

JussathoB · 28/03/2023 22:21

The trouble with ovarian cysts is that there are lots of different types so the information you get is quite confusing. Ask what type of cyst it is and what the plan is for monitoring. When a younger family member had a cyst ( a dermoid cyst in her case, these do not come and go by themselves) I found some helpful information on the internet from hospitals in Australia

Smogtopia · 28/03/2023 22:56

Mine was satsuma sized! I actually never distinguished the normal round ligament pains and cyst twinging so I was surprised to be told I had one at my 6/7 week scan and that it was to blame for any twinges I may have felt.
I was advised to mention it at 12 week scan - sonographer at 6/7 week scan wasn't concerned. It had disappeared by 12 week scan and I suffered no issues or pain (outside of what I'd describe as normal growing pains which I'd had in two other pregnancie)

SarahHewitt · 29/03/2023 15:22

@Ichosetheredpill wow that did grow didn’t it. Did you get any symptoms with it? Any pain or bleeding or anything

OP posts:
SarahHewitt · 29/03/2023 16:02

@Smogtopia so yours was gone by 12 week scan. Before then at your 6/7 week scan did they tell you the type of cyst? They never told me the type of cyst just it’s a ‘cyst’. Did you have any symptoms with the cyst through pregnancy like other pains or discharge or bleeding or anything?

OP posts:
Smogtopia · 29/03/2023 21:23

I had no specific pain other than the normal pulling twingy pain. No bleeding no discharge. I think they said it was a luteus cyst - so the place in the ovary that the egg was produced and then didn't 'go down' because of the pregnancy hormones.

It had completely disappeared by 12 weeks and never caused any issues. If not have known it was there if I had skipped my 6/7 week scan and just did my NHS 12 week scan

Smogtopia · 29/03/2023 21:24

OP - are you experiencing pain bleeding or discharge? You seem focussed on those points?

SarahHewitt · 30/03/2023 09:44

@Smogtopia no it was just so I could preempt what symptoms it could cause. Thanks

OP posts:
SarahHewitt · 30/03/2023 09:45

@Smogtopia ah ok yeah with me having one 6/7 weeks scan they picked it up too, I’ll see on my 12 week scan too x
