Tommy’s say to call a doctor, how urgent is it?

YellowHatt · 25/03/2023 22:39

I’m 9 weeks pregnant and started feeling awful this evening: chills, aches and a temperature.

Temp is 37.9. When I Googled, Tommys.org says ‘If your temperature is above 37.5 degrees Celsius, even with no other flu or cold symptoms, call your doctor or hospital maternity unit.’

How serious is this? How urgent do I need to be? It’s the middle of the night and the weekend so contacting the GP wouldn’t be until Monday. I assume this isn’t an A&E job. I tried 111 online and it wasn’t very helpful. I’m shattered, do I try to sleep or do I sit up on the phone to 111?

Have you taken paracetamol?

Viviennemary · 25/03/2023 22:43

You could do a test for Covid. I would just take paracetemol and go to bed. See how you feel in the morning.

pwests · 25/03/2023 22:44

You could call 111 for advice

YellowHatt · 25/03/2023 22:46

Haven’t taken paracetamol. I’ve taken baby aspirin like I do every day, does that work the same.

If it’s safe to take paracetamol too I’ll do that.

Haven’t got any Covid tests unfortunately.

Call 111. I have no idea if it’s urgent but you’ll soon find out.

johsq20 · 25/03/2023 22:49

I wouldn't phone a doctor for this personally.

breakfastbagel · 25/03/2023 22:51

That's a very mild temperature. Is there something specific you are worried about?

I would just go to bed.

Ducksurprise · 25/03/2023 22:57

No doc but I don't think that is a temp, most home thermometers aren't accurate anyway

undergroundstation · 25/03/2023 22:59

That really doesn’t sound like a temp. I’d not take anything and just go to bed. See how you feel tomorrow.

Coffeellama · 25/03/2023 23:00

I wouldn’t be worried at this stage, I’d just take paracetamol (which is safe don’t worry) and drink plenty of water. But if it carries on into tomorrow or you feel unsure at all call 111 for proper advice.

RosesAndHellebores · 25/03/2023 23:03

Take two paracetamol and go to bed. What will be will be at this stage and nothing will.prevent it if it's going to happen which it very well may not.

Isn't 37.5 pretty much a normal temperature?

RosesAndHellebores · 25/03/2023 23:03

Why are you taking baby aspirin every day? Is that new advice?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/03/2023 23:04

You're basically describing how I felt a few weeks ago when I had Covid. I'd take some paracetamol and go to bed, then get a test in the morning. (Our local Tesco Express and local petrol station gave them, £2 each).

YellowHatt · 25/03/2023 23:20

I thought it was only a slightly raised temp too and then I made the mistake of googling and it made me worried, I’ll attach the screenshots. Google is not my friend!

Thanks for everyone saying to go to bed, I will do that and hopefully few better in the morn…. And if not then take a Covid test and call the maternity unit.

Why are you taking baby aspirin every day? Is that new advice?

It’s on the advice of my clinic.

It’s an IVF pregnancy and I’ve had previous losses so I’m a mess of anxiety honestly.

Which is probably why those google responses sent me into a bit of a spin! I’m not sure what is a ‘normal’ worry that I’m supposed to ignore and get on with and what I’m supposed to act on.

Thanks to everyone for the reassurance though.

Can you contact your EPU? I'm sure they'll just reassure you but it's better to speak to someone, if nothing else you'll sleep better with your mind at ease. Hope your feeling better OP.

RosesAndHellebores · 25/03/2023 23:03

Why are you taking baby aspirin every day? Is that new advice?

I think it is. I was high risk for preeclampsia (family history + fertility treatment to conceive) and was put on baby asprin every day until 36 weeks.

posygir · 25/03/2023 23:30

Personally I'd just rest and take paracetamol, that's what I'v done when it has happened to me. Also try to drink plenty of water, best to avoid getting dehydrated.

It's natural to be anxious after what you've been through but hopefully you'll feel better tomorrow.

Prescottdanni123 · 25/03/2023 23:52

I'd call 111. Tommys won't be saying that for no reason.

RosesAndHellebores · 26/03/2023 00:21

I am sorry to hear your circumstances @YellowHatt. Fingers crossed and very best wishes for you.

LadyJ2023 · 26/03/2023 00:34

It's a bug all you can do is keep warm and paracetamol till it burns out. Some in my family had it off and on 2 weeks I had it 4 days. If your only 9 weeks nothing much would be done anyway tbh

Morningcoffeeview · 26/03/2023 12:19

RosesAndHellebores · 25/03/2023 23:03

Why are you taking baby aspirin every day? Is that new advice?

I was told with my first to because my Mum had high BP in her pregnancies.

With no.2 they said not to bother as my BP was always on the lower side of normal.

YellowHatt · 26/03/2023 16:01

Still felt a little unwell upon waking so I spoke to the midwife who was really kind, asked some Qs and said as long as temp stays under 38 then not to worry.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. I was in such a spin and it helped to not feel alone.

Hey @YellowHatt glad you've got it sorted with the Mw. Hope you feel better soon. I am in exactly the same situation except only 6wks. I spoke to my IVF nurse last night and she said to have the paracetamol with the 75mg of aspirin. Although what will be will be, it isn't easy to not worry after everything that goes on with IVF. I'm here if you ever want to chat. x

isitaline97 · 29/03/2023 21:53

@YellowHatt hope your feeling a little better now? x
