Empty sac 6 weeks ?

Hey ladies , so by my dates I am 6 weeks 5 days
I had an early scan due to some pain 3 days ago which shown a 3mm sac , which apparently resembles a 3-4 week sac.
today I had another scan and it shown a slightly bigger sac at 6mm in just 3 days . Although still measures 3-4 weeks . No yolk sac or nothing .
how is this possible ? I’ve been testing positive for nearly 2 weeks now , surely I should be over the 5 week mark? I have another scan in 12 days , should hopefully see more . Anyone shed some light ? This is very mentally draining .

Sorry you're going through this. I recently had an early scan at 6+3 and they could see baby and yolk sac. Baby was measuring 5+5 with a heartbeat.

They should have seen something if your dates of being 6+5 are correct - is there a chance anyway dates could be wrong? Otherwise it may be something like a blighted ovum where implantation happens, but the embryo doesn't grow, leaving an empty sac which can continue to grow.

Hopefully they should be able to give you a solid answer with what's happening with your scan in 12 days, although I know it doesn't make the waiting any easier. x

@Sagittarius25 thanks for the reply ! Il not 100% on dates , all I know is my last period should take me to those dates . Doctor is 99% that I ovulated late . Although even if I did ovulate late , I’ve been testing positive for nearly 2 weeks . I thought I would’ve seen something :(

Hey, sorry your going through this.
In November I went through the same thing. I had a scan at 6+3 for bleeding and just a sack there, no yolk or fetal pole etc... was told probably a blight ovum as hcg was measuring 49,950!
Dr said they "should" see something at this stage and I had an internal scan too.

Went back 10 days later and there was a baby with heartbeat and my origional dates were exact. I'm now 20 weeks.

It's an absolutely exhausting experience and my thoughts are with you as it mentally broke me for them 10 days, having to function was so hard. I lost all hope and got really upset when I kept getting morning sickness and symptoms.

Don't lose hope as everything is really really tiny still at this stage.

they never mentioned blight ovum they just said I’m just too early , but I thought I was further on ! It’s gonna be a long 12 days . I’m still getting really bad nausea and sore boobs which I’ll take as a good sign for now . I’m just so worried , it’s such a hard time especially not knowing :( love this forum ! Xx

I'm currently 6+1, had a private scan today and had a sac but no yolk sac or fetal pole. From my period dates etc I should be 6+1 but I could be earlier as there's nothing in the sac at this time of point. I'm off to the epu for blood work to see if my HCG is rising

Hello, I went for a reassurance scan 3 days ago because I’ve been having some light brown spotting, almost every day! I estimated I was 5w6days, all they could see was an empty gestational sac. Has anybody else had this with any good news? I also had implantation bleeding a few weeks back too (very light brown spotting). Thanks in advance 🤞🏼

@Emmaaaaabroen8 i had a scan today as I’m 6 weeks 1 day from my last period and had some spotting. From when I ovulated though I think I’m only 5 weeks 3 days as I ovulate late. I’ve got to get my bloods done again on Saturday to make sure my levels are rising. How are you getting on?

Hello @Avocado098 - sounds similar to me- I had my dates wrong they figured I was just over 5 weeks at my initial scan. Had my follow up scan last Friday and we saw the sac had the yolk sac and pole with the heart beat :) fingers crossed for you ❤️

I am in a similar boat, I went for an early vaginal scan because i had some light spotting for 2-3 days after a 6 hour wait I got a scan and I should be 6w 3d according to my last menstrual cycle. They couldn't see any yolk sac so i have to go back next Monday but I'm torturing myself from what i have read its more frequently a sign of miscarriage than a miscalculated age. We only had one window near ovulation last month because i was travelling for work so i know the exact date of conception. However, my first pregnancy test (first day of missed period was negative) 3 days later i tried again and got a positive test with a different brand but also tried with the same brand from the first test and got negative. The next day i got two positive tests with two different brands. could that mean my ovulation dates were late? My cycle can be anything from 21 -29 days. but i dont want to get hopes up and prepare for the worst if i have to.

Just in case anyone needs some hope right now. I went back today for my follow up scan from my empty sac last week. I had heavier bleeding this morning so was sure my body was starting to naturally miscarry but got the scan and low and behold the little bean had emerged from the woodwork, yolk sac and embryo were now visible even had a strong heartbeat. The bleeding they say was from a hematoma under my sac which can be common in early pregnancy and usually just clears up on its own. I am measuring 2 weeks behind expected dates (supposed to be 8w 1d but measuring 6 weeks 2 days, again doctor not worried and will see me next at 12 weeks. I had fully prepared myself for the worst and i think its always good to hope for the best and prepare for the worst but sometimes you can get a surprise :)

Hi. My daughter had her 6 week scan today. She has been through ivf. Could see gestational sac and yolk. No fetal pole. She has to go back in a week but not hopeful. They said her sac was not the size it should be for 6 weeks. I’ve googled and her sack is about size of 5 week pregnancy but she defo 6 weeks as they implanted the embryo so dates are exact. Was yours measuring smaller your sac? I’m so sad

Thinking of you @Tokoro - I also had a positive outcome from this. I ovulated day 20 so I wasn’t as far on as originally thought. I went for my 6 week scan and the sac was empty, I was devastated but I went back about a week later and the fetal pole and yolk sac were there. I’m now 13 weeks. Even now my nhs due date is still wrong, hoping to get a more accurate date at my scan tomorrow. I also had bleeding and had a hematoma and cervical erosion so that was another worry but all ok and the bleeding has mostly gone. Wishing your daughter all the best for next week. I know how awful and long the wait is but hopefully things develop. Things can change so quickly in early pregnancy, even in a day or so. I hope you’re all ok. Her hormone level was taken yesterday and it’s just 1469 which isn’t as high as it should be. It’s not looking good. Her dates are accurate as ivf so they know exactly when egg was put in. I’m utterly heartbroken. So is she. They still saying we have to wait a week and if no heartbeat then she has to stop the progesterone and her bleed will start. It’s so cruel.

Pregnancy test can be taken so early now. It is possible that your dates are off and you're much earlier in your pregnancy than you think. Unfortunately, it really is a wait and see situation. I hope you have a positive outcome.

Her dates are accurate because it is ivf so they know exactly when embryo was put in. She is 6 weeks but hormones low and small sac and no fetal pole. They’re making her wait another week before checking her again and she has to continue with the hormone but chances are slim

Could you see fetal pole or gestational sac at 6weeks. Do you know what size the gestational sac was.

@Tokoro When I was just over 6 weeks they could see a sac, yolk sac and a tiny fetal pole. I think the sac was measuring 5mm (does that sound about right? I can’t fully remember) - the nhs had me down as over 7 weeks then though but I was just over 6. The week before showed an empty sac. Hope you’re ok x

I feel so sad and low. My daughter is struggling with all of this emotionally and I feel what she feels. Her dates are exact as ivf. Her hcg is just under 1500 which is low for 6 weeks. If it was 5 weeks all would look fine but she defo 6. Her sac is 4mm which they say is small for 6 week. It should be 10mm I think at 6 week. Next Wednesday we know for sure but not hopeful

@Tokoro i hope everything goes well for you both. It’s so tough and I hope you’re ok. My sac definitely wasn’t 10mm at that stage so hopefully that brings some comfort and hope for you. Lots of love x

Thank you so much. The wait is awful. She says she doesn’t feel pregnant anymore. It will be a miracle if all of a sudden a fetal pole and heartbeat is there on Wednesday but she has been told to prepare for the worst. We will just have to do another round of ivf. I’m off to spend the weekend with her. She is finding it hard. Thank you x

Thought I’d update ! I have an 8 week old now . She was just smaller and a bit behind in growth but fine other than that :) hope everyone gets the outcome they want x

Thank you for your post. My daughter had a 6 week 6 day scan today. A week after her last one where nothing seemed hopeful. Today everything was seen. Fetal pole and heartbeat and yolk etc all good. The only thing is she is measuring 6 week pregnant not 6 week 6 days and scan is saying she is 6 days. Therefore smaller than dates and dates are accurate because it’s ivf so we know. This seems worrying. All they said is just have another scan in 3 weeks and monitor
