Hi there my baby is 5 days old today. Really wanted to breast feed. He’s been latching well and feeding however he’s never really satisfied so my partner has been topping him up with formula. Last night he screamed all night I fed him about 45 mins every hour all night, so by time I’d winded him and changed his nappy he wanted to feed again. I was shattered come 7am as was he as we both had 0 sleep all night. My nipples had enough and at 7am my partner gave him a bottle of formula. To which he went to sleep straight away for two hours.

thinking of giving up breast feeding but feeling like a failure giving up so early and can’t stop crying about it. Does any one have any advice? I just don’t know what to do for best x

Moonicorn · 08/03/2023 13:07

@Blondewave a bottle of formula doesn’t mean you have to give up breastfeeding! Do you have a good electric pump?

Fed is best. Do what you have to do for both of your health - physical and mental.

Saltandpepperr · 08/03/2023 13:57

@Blondewave my boy is 12 days old now and the first week of breastfeeding was pure hell your not alone I promise. Between the nipple pain, cluster feeding and waiting for my milk to come in properly it was so hard and I thought about giving up many times but I didn't and I'm glad because now it's a lot easier. I found pumping in-between feeding when I could increasing supply. If you can't do this combi feeding is fine it doesn't mean u have to give up! I hope it gets easier for you.

Rainbowbaby23 · 08/03/2023 14:03

Feeling very off today. Had some nausea and vomiting and (sorry tmi) loose bowels there now. Praying that it’s not just a bug

@TeddyBeans a postnatal thread would be a brilliant idea!

congratulations to everyone who has had their babies recently 😍🥰

@Blondewave @Saltandpepperr i understand, the first week/two weeks are difficult to get through and I also thought about giving up a few times! You don’t have to give up if you don’t want to, my advice would be to stick with it and it will get better. There’s nothing wrong with giving formula as well, there’s also nothing wrong with just giving formula - whatever is best for you. Try to relax and not get too frustrated, I know it’s easier said than done. Also pumping I find is a great way to boost supply and then you can feed with a bottle and give your nipples a break!!

I'd love a post natal thread! This journey feels awfully lonely sometimes!

Rose429 · 08/03/2023 15:17

@NM1819 Yep I have had it occasionally, checking my pulse at the same time just in case it’s a heart attack and it wasn’t faster. It goes away after 2-3 minutes. My midwife said it’s likely the growing uterus crushing onto your lungs.

Rose429 · 08/03/2023 15:27

@Blondewave Wish you the best of luck! Try hanging in there and it will get better.

In my breastfeeding class, the midwife said formula makes life easier for both mum and babies - babies get “milk drunk” from it, sleep longer stretch and it’s easier for them than sucking from mum’s nipples as well. So a lot of people give up in the first two weeks. But hang in there! And if you must use a bottle but still wish to breastfeed, make sure you angle the bottle at a roughly horizontal line so babies must suck to get the milk out - similar to sucking from your breasts so they don’t refuse your breasts later.

havananana · 08/03/2023 17:00

Img just made my labour playlist and the tears 😭😄 I'm so hormonally emotional these days

Dreamingof3 · 08/03/2023 17:08

@havananana what sort of thing have you added? I was thinking about doing one but I have no idea what I'd want to listen to 😂

Deut28 · 08/03/2023 17:15

I read that the capacity of a baby's stomach goes from 5ml to 60ml just in the first week. The crazy relentless cluster feeding is totally normal. As their stomach grows they want more and that sends signals to your body to produce more. It's a feedback loop. It's really rough when you're in the midst of it though. I'm trying to mentally prep myself for a rough first few weeks, but for me the benefits in terms of baby's immune system, reducing chance of allergies, and reducing cancer risk for me are all worth it in the long run.

SouthwestSis · 08/03/2023 17:20

@Blondewave this is completely normal at this stage and also a challenging time for you with hormones as your milk really comes in.
Just because a baby accepts a bottle of formula after a breastfeed doesnt mean that they needed it (they have a strong sucking reflex), so you dont need to do so much topping up, and cluster feeding is baby's way of "putting their order in" for their next breastfeed.
All completely normal (but still so very hard for you) but if you can persist it will be so worth it!
Keep going mama!

havananana · 08/03/2023 17:23

Dreamingof3 · 08/03/2023 17:08

@havananana what sort of thing have you added? I was thinking about doing one but I have no idea what I'd want to listen to 😂

Songs like The Temptations - My Girl and Beetles - Here Comes the Sun, Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere

Very positive vibes but I'm so excited to meet her it brings tears
They are also songs from our wedding so double emotional 🥹🥰

Cats23 · 08/03/2023 17:39

@Blondewave - Fed is best!!!!
I had to express dc 1 as so prem, dc2 & 3 were breast fed for 6weeks- Its so hard and I was so painfully engorged as produced so much milk but both babies slept so much that the whole experience was so painfully hard , I felt much happier when they were on formula- happy Mum=Happy baby!

With dc4, I breastfed for 5months, I found it easy and was comfortable stopping at 5 months, This baby, will see how it goes- no pressure!

havananana · 08/03/2023 19:36

How do you guys wash or plan to wash your babies bottom after a poop?

NHS and the courses we did say to our baby on a waterproof changing mat, wipe off the poop with a wipe and then wash with cotton and water by lifting the feet up a bit.

However, I know some people / countries wash baby bottoms after poop by holding baby above a sink

TeddyBeans · 08/03/2023 19:56

@havananana have only ever changed baby on a changing mat. They don't like it (it's cold) so it's nice to lay a muslin down on it first. Baby wipes here, tried with cotton wool and water with DS and it was just such a faff
