Positive stories about bleeding in second trimester, please

Hey, just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I’m feeling tired, stressed and hormonal, so please only share your story if it is a positive one. I’m usually pretty resilient and rational but it’s been a tough couple of weeks and it’s starting to get to me.

I’m 24 weeks pregnant with my second baby (first was a straightforward pregnancy and vaginal birth) and I’ve had five instances of bleeding in the past two weeks. It’s fresh red blood, sometimes with small clots, and every time it happens I phone triage and then have to go to the hospital for a cervical check and blood tests (I’m rhesus negative as well). Twice they’ve just kept me for a few hours, once I was kept overnight, and twice now I’ve been kept in for two nights.

My placenta is anterior high. Cervix is closed and looks healthy from the outside. The bleeding is coming from inside my uterus but they can’t offer much more of an explanation than that.

They’ve said the edge of the placenta might have lifted away slightly from the uterus and be causing the bleeding. I got myself into a panic earlier today wondering how likely this is to lead to placental abruption, which is obviously dangerous.

I'm trying to remind myself that statistically that's a small risk, but if anyone had recurrent bleeding at this stage of pregnancy and everything turned out fine, I’d love to hear from you. Thank you.

Hello

I could of written this myself! Literally exactly the same apart from my placenta was low ( not previa) though.
they never really said for sure what mine was and I was 18 weeks when it started and it continued to 23 weeks. Gushes of blood were pretty scary.

how are you now?

Notlong2go · 04/03/2023 01:09

Hi OP, how are you?

Did you find out what was causing your bleeding?

slightlyanxious23 · 04/03/2023 18:50

So I had ten bleeds in the first three weeks of February but I've only had one in the last week and a half, so I'm really hoping that whatever was causing it has resolved... I still have no real information – they've said best explanation is the edge of the placenta has lifted away from the uterus, but apparently this is impossible to see or confirm on a scan so there's no way to really know. I have a consultant appointment next week and then regular growth scans beginning the week after that, so I'm being given a good level of care – it just seems there's quite limited knowledge around this issue. Baby is moving lots now though which is lovely.

I'm glad your bleeding seems to be calming down and baby is moving lots.
Do you go to hospital everytime you bleed?

slightlyanxious23 · 11/03/2023 09:01

Yes, they've said any time it's fresh red bleeding I should go to the hospital. But to be honest a couple of times the bleeds were so small and stopped so quickly (and I was so exhausted) that I didn't go in. I've only had one more small bleed since my last post so I really hope it's resolved now... Growth scans start next week. And at my consultant appointment I was told I'll likely be induced at 39 weeks.

That sounds positive I’m glad things are settling a little bit for you. X

pm94 · 11/03/2023 17:22

I could have wrote this myself apart from the anterior high placenta. I’ve bled about 8 times in the last 4 weeks (red blood when I wipe and then nothing more after until next episode) rhesus negative too so lots of anti D’s. I passed a strange piece of tissue (which no one knows what it was but seems to think it may have come from my cervix) I’ve had so many scans and also a colposcopy last week and everything comes back normal. They say it can be ‘one of those things’.. I’ve been put on cyclogest which is progesterone because of the bleeding.. they said they don’t think I will but could possibly be at risk of pre term labor. Very stressful and worrying being in and out of hospital but do feel very looked after.
how’s things with you now?

Inkypot · 11/03/2023 23:47

Hi, I had some bleeding in my second trimester with my daughter. It was a long while ago so I don't remember much about it sorry but I do remember it was frightening at the time. I really feel for you.
All I can say is my daughter is 10 years old, she is fine, she had no problems regarding my bleeding whatsoever. I had a planned cesarean at 37 weeks and she was perfect (still is perfect of course)
As unhelpful as it sounds, try not to over-worry. Big hugs.

J241 · 13/03/2023 18:19

Sorry to hear you’re going through this!

I’m 14 weeks pregnant with my first baby and started bleeding at 12 weeks. Have had 3 bleeds since.

I have only been scanned once after bleeding and I’ve only had anti d once (4 days after the bleed).

My nerves are shattered! I’m hoping my baby is ok & this doesn’t continue all the way through but not getting any answers :(

slightlyanxious23 · 04/04/2023 21:20

How are you now, @J241? I hope everything's okay.

Just to update for anyone reading this in future, I'm now 31 weeks pregnant and have had no bleeding for five weeks. After 11 bleeds in February, it stopped as suddenly as it started.

I had my first growth scan at 28 weeks. There was some slight concern about the abdominal circumference, but I was scanned again at 30 weeks and everything was back on track. Just dealing with the usual third trimester discomfort now!

Thats great it’s all positive!
I’m now just over 17 weeks and have had no bleeding for 2 weeks. I bled on and off for 3 weeks but all seems ok!
Doctor is going to do my 20 week scan.
I was a wreck for a few weeks but so glad bleeding has stopped, feeling much better now 😊. Everything is such a worry isn’t it!

slightlyanxious23 · 10/06/2023 13:37

Another update for anyone reading in the future. Delivered a healthy, chunky baby this week. Because of the bleeding I had in February, my consultant didn't want me to go past my due date, so I was induced by having my waters broken – and a few intense hours later baby was here! It all happened very quickly.

The only complication was a trip to theatre following the birth for manual removal of the placenta. One small area was apparently very firmly embedded. I asked if this could be connected in some way to the bleeding I had, but they said they just can't be sure.

Congratulations OP Flowers so you have any pics?

*Do you

Inkypot · 10/06/2023 23:12

Biggest congratulations to you OP! I'm so happy for you!

Spottytoddler · 26/08/2023 16:44

Congratulations OP that’s great. Can I ask how they knew the blood was coming from your uterus given that your cervix wasn’t open and the bleeding couldn’t be seen on a scan? I’ve got the same issue currently and they say they’re not sure if the bleeding is coming from inside the uterus, the cervix or the vagina.

slightlyanxious23 · 31/08/2023 14:06

Hi, @Spottytoddler. I think it was a process of elimination – they couldn’t see anything in the vagina or on the cervix that could have been causing the bleeding, which meant it must have been coming from the uterus. They said a common cause of bleeding can be cervical ectropion, but they checked and I didn’t have that (and they also said that wouldn’t produce as much blood as I was seeing either). Hope you’re okay – it’s a horrible thing to go through, and the lack of information makes it so much more stressful.

OP posts:
slightlyanxious23 · 31/08/2023 14:07

And it must be possible to pass blood even when the cervix is ‘closed’ because that’s what was happening to me. If anyone medical is reading this thread perhaps they could explain, because I don’t understand how that works.

Spottytoddler · 31/08/2023 15:14

Thanks for replying, fortunately the bleeding has stopped for now. They have kind of said the opposite to what you were told! They’ve said that because they can’t see any reason for the bleeding on an ultrasound scan (cervix closed, placenta high, no haematoma) then it’s probably coming from the vagina. I do have a very small ectropian but they said definitely not big enough to cause that much bleeding. It’s a mystery!
