My DM is a childminder and has a couple of bilingual children. They tend to speak later (both have been well beyond 2 years old when they started talking), but then the benefit of being bilingual is fab when they get going! Both are from single parent families though so speak only their parents language at home and English while with DM

I'm finding it hard to believe that this journey could be over in a week's time. I'll be 36 weeks on Sunday and it just seems mad that 7 days after that I'll be considered full term. My bump doesn't seem big enough, I feel like an imposter, it's all very weird. What I think is Braxton hicks is ramping up a bit but even that seems weird

I don't know... I'm having a bit of a moment

@havanamama - Me and Dp are Welsh, Though we both went through the English stream in school.
Welsh is on the National Curriculem and all the schools (High school)have Welsh and English stream. I am not fluent , neither is Dp but we know enough to get by if we had too.
My brothers went through Welsh stream, so fluent. My older children's father is fluent also , his first language is Welsh but he speaks English as his main language outside of his family. We moved to The Welsh border with the older 2 ,when they were born , the basic Welsh is taught at school and their father never spoke to them in Welsh, shame.
Upon moving back to our hometown, the Dc went to 85% Welsh taught schools (Thats the norm here) and they were almost fluent within 6months (Ages 6 &10 at the time)
Younger Dc were born here and are in the Welsh school so know a lot already, they will be fluent by age 10.
We don't speak it at home though.
My brothers kids are mainly English speaking but are bilingual, as are several friends kids.
I think it's wonderful to have bilingual kids,
Kids are like sponges, they pick it up so easily.

havanamama · 26/01/2023 23:11

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and experiences.
I am mainly looking at the different methods, as we 100% want to raise her bilingual. It seems that quite a few children start speaking at a later stage even if only spoken to in one language, so I'm not too concerned about it.

We will start with bilingual, but when she starts school I would like to teach her to speak other languages as I am fluent in 4, and have found it majorly advantageous in life in general and professionally.

How exciting!!

Babynum2 · 26/01/2023 23:59

@TeddyBeans I am totally opposite I have fully come to terms and I am so ready! I have had a horrible pregnancy and its getting even harder these last few weeks. Tonight I cannot sleep I feel so squashed I'm struggling to even breathe and my back keeps locking everytime I move from 1 side to another.

Eviction in 5 weeks baby 🤣

Choc2022 · 27/01/2023 03:52

@havanamama I'm not sure whether there are set methods but coming from ethnic minority background what we usually do in our families is speak english and native language at the same time with more focus on native language. E.g. we would conversate, day to day, as much as we could in native language but when teaching or reading books read in English but also teach the second language words at the same time. If we read a book about animals we would say english name plus second language names. Generally when kids go to school as English is spoken, the mother tongue gets left behind so in our family the parents try to cement the mother tongue pre school.

4 languages is impressive!! I can conversate in 3 and read and write 4 and agree it is definitely advantageous and I'd like to implement bilingual(ism) also. Ive also added baby signing book to my wishlist as I read how baby sign language could be beneficial also.

I find these parenting discussions very interesting and exciting.

I’m 32 weeks today. Got a scan to see if my placenta has moved, can’t wait to see baby 🥰

TeddyBeans · 27/01/2023 07:57

@Babynum2 oh I feel you on all those things, I'm just in disbelief that it's so soon 😨

@Blocklynn good luck with your scan today!

@TeddyBeans so so exciting but I bet it is nerve wracking. I'm only 31 weeks so haven't had that moment yet. Right now it's all just excitement but I can see that changing as reality really sets in!!

@havanamama that really is amazing. I lived in France for a year and only learned how to say "I am English" and "I don't speak french" in French. I tried and did do French lessons but I'm utterly useless at languages. Same with my 5 tears of Spanish at high school, I just couldn't grasp it so I applaude anyone who can teach their little ones right from the start

Dreamingof3 · 27/01/2023 08:45

@TeddyBeans I have 7 weeks until my 'shes not coming on her own, get her out' date and it feels like forever 😂

@Blocklynn hope it's moved for you!

I have a growth scan this morning so hoping for enough but not too much gain from last time 😂

Good luck! What time is the scan? Move placenta move!!! 🏃🏼‍♀️

Cuppasoupmonster · 27/01/2023 08:52

I would 100% raise my child as bilingual if I was bilingual myself (or DH was). The overall benefit is worth a tiny speech delay at the beginning, just brush off the ‘competitive parenting’ stuff and tell everyone they’re mastering 2 languages 😉

30 weeks today 🎉 my next scan is Valentine’s Day and that’s when we’re going to put together a plan for action for his eviction 😊

In other exciting news it looks like I will get my full year of maternity leave after all (long boring story about work), which is a huge relief as 4 months really didn’t appeal 😭

When are you setting cots up? I think I’ll leave that til the day before my induction date, just because of space. Getting excited now to meet my little man and bring him home! 💙

AGirlsNameIsAryaStark · 27/01/2023 08:53

@Blocklynn Good luck!

Got my first growth scan this afternoon, biiiiiig babies run in my family so pray for me 😂

Perexi · 27/01/2023 10:35

Oooo good luck everyone with scan's today

AGirlsNameIsAryaStark · 27/01/2023 10:45

@Cuppasoupmonster The nursery cot is already up (although still has the plastic on the mattress etc), i'm desperate to put the next to me up but we'll need to have a mass clear out of our bedroom before hand! I just hate the boxes laying around looking untidy

iratepirate · 27/01/2023 12:57

@Cuppasoupmonster our cot is up and ready as I’ve just moved DC into a bed instead to free up the cot and moved that back into our room. Just need to move the base back up to the top setting.

That's so good about your Mat leave!

I'm getting a year too, but I'm a bit sad about it, as baby just seems like such a baby then still - not walking, maybe still drinking milk...
just feels so sad to leave a baby in a nursery. ☹️ I honestly don't know how others deal with it even earlier on

AK93 · 27/01/2023 14:12

I think I'm mentally drained from the countless times I have to ring hospital just to make sure things are sorted. Every time I'm told "it'll be on badger notes" for an appt it isn't and I just don't understand how it's okay for this to happen to a (anxious) patient every time. It's a system that clearly doesn't work with the hospital I'm with but doesn't seem to be an alternative. It's getting me down cause I can't afford to turn up to be turned away because it hasn't been booked or I'm not told about changes but I really am fed up of having to phone so much :(

Blocklynn · 27/01/2023 14:33

Hope everyones scan has gone/goes well!

I had good news!
Placenta has moved 🎉🥳🎊
Needs to be 25mm away and it’s now 40mm.
Baby currently estimated to be 4lb 8oz.

Head down, on its side, back to my right side, that’s why I get all the kicks on the left.

If it’s carries on the chart line it’s on at the moment it could be a 9lb baby at full term 😳

The scan lady said baby has a lot of hair 🥰

Dreamingof3 · 27/01/2023 15:39

Fab news @Blocklynn
My scan estimated 4lb13 today 😂 but that's just shy of the 50th centile on my chart. Taking With a pinch of salt though as there was quite a high abdominal circumference which I know can push the weight up a bit

Babynum2 · 27/01/2023 17:31

I'm in bed very poorly DP run me a bath and I feel asleep in it. Been sick so much there's nothing left to come up so it's like poison🤮 I just don't want to feel like this when I go into labour because I have 0 energy!

AGirlsNameIsAryaStark · 27/01/2023 18:17

Ahh jealous you got a lovely photo @Blocklynn, they wouldn’t do photos for us as it’s a growth scan.

baby is all fine and currently 3.9lbs, so should be top end of 7 pounds at birth (fingers crossed!)

Blocklynn · 27/01/2023 19:53

@AGirlsNameIsAryaStark she did say they might not get a picture this time as baby is bigger it’s harder, but then printed us that one. Glad your baby is fine 🥰

@Dreamingof3 thats a good weight, how far along are you? I think mine is about 70th centile 🙈

@Babynum2 hope you feel better soon xx

Amy1303 · 27/01/2023 20:15

So much to catch up on!

Lovely scan pictures too, not long now till we get to meet baby's 🥰

Super stressful day, been for growth scan at 32 weeks and baby has dropped to below the 3rd centile, weekly scans now with a view to get to 37 weeks for planned section of growth stabilises, steroid injections planned!

Had previous placental abruption at 36+ 4 so feel like I'm living in a knife edge.

So lovely to have a group of mamas to chat things through with xx
