Ultrasound 7 weeks 4 days no embryo

Hi guys,

So I had my first ultrasound today and it didn’t go as well as I had hoped.
They did ultrasound first and saw the sac but bladder wasn’t full enough so did an internal.
They could then see 2 yolk sacs together joined almost one was a lot bigger than the other but no embryos or heartbeats.

They asked if I had my dates wrong but I don’t as I know when I ovulated etc. to the day. They said I looked about 6 weeks, I’ve to go back in 10 days to see. If the pregnancy does not progress how long would it be until I would know? Anyone any experience of this?

Thanks

Hey, how did you confirm ovulation?

I'm sorry I don't have any advice x

helloimnew123 · 18/01/2023 17:31

Hi,

This happened to me years ago.

They booked a scan 10 days later to confirm if the pregnancy was viable after not seeing a heartbeat at 7 weeks. I think they need a gap to see if anything changes.

I didn't have any progress at the next scan so I was referred to the NHS for medical management.

Anne19 · 18/01/2023 17:37

Hey, I was using the ovulation sticks and got the static smiley the month I conceived. I also had a pain on my side when I did which is a good indicator for me.

Thanks for letting me know your experience it’s hard to wait and a difficult thing to go through! I kind of guessed thats what the wait is for it’s just going to be a long 10 days. I was also prescribed progesterone which I thought was strange

There's a possibility you conceived up to 5 days after ovulating, as that's how long
sperm can live. So if they think you are looking like 6 weeks, there may be some hope.

Combine that with them confirming the pregnancy is not ectopic, progesterone may help support it, if it's good news.

I hope you have good news in 10 days x

helloimnew123 · 18/01/2023 17:55

I really feel for you, I remember it feeling like a very long wait. Hopefully in 10 days they will see a heartbeat 🤞🏼

Have you had any bleeding?

Mine was a missed miscarriage. I didn't ever get any pregnancy symptoms but I didn't get any bleeding or anything either.

I have since had a healthy pregnancy.

Anne19 · 18/01/2023 18:29

That’s great to hear! No nothing like that no cramps or bleeding. They just said to ring if I did. They did say I was measuring 6 weeks so that is something just think it’s strange that there were no embryos even if I was 6.
I’ve had pregnancy symptoms from the beginning nauseous, tired and hungry all the time 😅

@Anne19 I'm in exactly the same situation, just been for an early scan and could see a pregnancy sac, but no yolk or embryo. I also thought I'm about 7.5 weeks (I use ovulation sticks) but measured 6.

helloimnew123 · 18/01/2023 20:54

The fact that they have said you are measuring 6 weeks is really positive.

And I think the progesterone is a positive too. I wasn't offered that.

Did they think it was twins with 2 sacks? Or that it's still developing?

Iv attached my early scan (6 weeks) from my viable pregnancy. You can't really see what any of it is. But you might be able to compare?

I was in this situation too was told it was 50/50.
Sadly I had a MMC and baby stopped growing at 6w1d.
So I didn't know until the second scan I had miscarried.

The egg implants later obv than ovulation which may be the case for you dating behind.

Did they mention a fetal pole?

hennythe100footbird · 18/01/2023 21:13

I have nothing constructive to offer but wanted you to know I have everything crossed for a positive outcome for you.

Sending hugs xx

Crimsonripple · 18/01/2023 21:18

I had a 6 week scan and it showed baby's heart beat. I'm sorry Op xx

Crimsonripple · 18/01/2023 21:20

To be precise baby hadn't formed. It was like a grain of rice but you could see it pulsating which indicated a heart beat.

GoT1904 · 18/01/2023 22:00

Ovulation tests don't confirm ovulation. They confirm that you're about to ovulate. Sometimes you'll get more than one peak reading each cycle, with the latter being true ovulation.

This happened with my son. They actually moved me back by 12 days! Hoping it's the case for you. X

MrsB16 · 19/01/2023 09:48

I had this a few weeks ago OP. Went for an early scan when I thought I was 7w 2days. It showed an empty sac which was pretty big in size but no yolk sac etc, the sonographer said it looked about 5w 6days and that she would expect to see at least a yolk sac by now but come back in 2 weeks. I was fairly sure on my dates as my husband and I had only dtd once so prepared for the worst. Went back exactly 2 weeks later and there is a baby with a heart beat measuring 7w, 4 days when I thought I was 9w 2 days. I’m due my 12w scan next week and feeling pretty anxious about the whole thing but just hoping it was a slow starter! The dates 100% don’t add up, even for late ovulation or late implantation so I have no idea! Good luck, it can happen.

Anne19 · 19/01/2023 09:54

Thanks for all of your comments I feel reassured no matter what the outcome.
My LP was the 25th of November and I had a positive test on the 19th of December so maybe I am slightly more behind then I thought.

So when they first did the scan there was only one gestational sac so they said there was just 1 but when they did the internal scan to see more they found 2 yolk sacs side by side so they said it looked like identical twins, they were a little concerned as one was a lot smaller then the other sac and they said they should be the same size.
All they could identify was the gestational sac and the 2 yolk sacs, they couldn’t find any embryo, any fetal pole/heartbeats so I guess I’ll just have to wait and see if they progress.
Thank you though it helps to talk it through we haven’t told anyone we are expecting yet so it’s hard to keep it all in.

Oh bless you. It's a shame you've to wait for so long for your scan, but I understand the reasons for it. How are you feeling? Xx

jalu47 · 19/01/2023 16:27

@Anne19 I could have written this EXACT post. I am supposedly 7+4 today and a scan today saw a gestational sac, yolk sac and an embryo with a CRL of 2.1mm but no heartbeat. LP was 27 Nov and positive test 22 Dec.

I had an NHS scan at 5+3 (long story, I was an inpatient over xmas and new year with a long-standing liver issue and they wanted to rule out ectopic) and just had a gestational sac. I then had a private scan this Monday at 7+1 - I was hoping to see a heartbeat but only a gestational sac and yolk sac and no embryo. NHS scan today and now a tiny embryo..

Things seems to be progressing but I'm way behind where I should be. They didn't offer me progesterone, wish they had! I have a scan in one week to assess progress. this is going to be torture. We have been trying for year and this little nugget is so wanted.

Anne19 · 19/01/2023 17:51

@GoT1904 I’m doing ok thank you for asking. A little bit paranoid at every little cramp but feeling much better today.

@jalu47 that’s great to hear that yours is progressing you must have been relieved to see the embryo. Very similar to my dates they must just all just grow at different rates in the early stages. I know most don’t get an ultrasound until close to 12 weeks so maybe by then they are where they are supposed to be in what you can see on ultrasounds. I know the wait is torture but hoping you get to see the heartbeat at your next scan.

jalu47 · 24/01/2023 14:19

@Anne19 how are you doing? When is your next scan? I'm finding this wait really difficult..

Anne19 · 24/01/2023 17:34

@jalu47 its tomorrow it was supposed to be Friday but they had to reschedule.

I started feeling anxious today with it being tomorrow but looking forward to having it now to put my mind at ease.

I don’t know if I’m just being paranoid but I haven’t felt as nauseous the past 2 days.

The waiting is very hard… a lot of what ifs and overthinking which I know is pointless as the scan is the only thing that’s going to confirm anything. Hope you don’t have too much longer to wait how are you feeling?

OP posts:
jalu47 · 24/01/2023 20:08

@Anne19 I feel very similar - very anxious but just wanting to know. I keep convincing myself it will all be fine and then flip flop to resigning myself to it all being over.

My scan is Friday morning. We have no childcare for my 2 yr old so I don't think my husband will be able to come in - they'll have to wait outside. I went through my first pregnancy alone because of covid and now I'm panicking about being on my own in that moment.

Wishing you the best of luck xx

SirVixofVixHall · 24/01/2023 20:10

I hope it is good news tomorrow OP.

ElleBelleLou · 24/01/2023 21:40

@Anne19 Just wanted to say I hope it's a positive outcome tomorrow - but that we're all here regardless of the outcome too xx

Twoinapod · 24/01/2023 21:41

With my first baby I went for my 12 week scan but was only measuring 10 weeks. They wanted me to come back after 2 weeks. Thankfully at that scan she was then 12 weeks, she’s now 11 years old and perfectly healthy.

I never understood how the dates could have been 2 weeks out as my cycles were bang on 28 day’s regular back then.

Really hope everything goes ok tomorrow for you.
