@Olegia Hi I have gestational diabetes from really early on so I've been on tablets and insulin since 5/6 weeks alongside diet changes. I recommend the Gestational Diabetes UK website/facebook group for really helpful advice and diet guidance/recipes. The NHS advice still advises things like breakfast cereal which most people with GD can't tolerate. If you do get diagnosed then very happy to answer anything I can! If you are worried pre-testing then just minimise sugar and refined carbs (white bread/pasta etc) and stick to wholemeal/brown. Don't cut out all carbs as that's no good either!

Olegia · 23/02/2023 07:19

@nicc1000 Sorry to hear, did you find out early on, or did you have previous pregnancies with GD?
yes I've had a look indeed, the midwives said they will first try and see how I fare with diet an exercise, but the thing is I already eat pretty healthy (oats, fruits, nuts and berries for breakfast, wholegrain pasta and bread, beans, and veg etc for the main meals), AND I go to the gym regularly, so I think if I do have GD I'm likely to be put straight on insulin

Do you have to do insulin shots, if so, every day?

My worry is mainly to have a very large baby which would make birth difficult, or to develop type 2 diabetes later on 🙀

nicc1000 · 23/02/2023 10:30

Oats can be hard to tolerate so try yoghurt with the nuts and seeds and a few berries. Healthy fat helps pair the carbs to reduce spikes. Avocado, greek yoghurt, nuts etc.

Yes I've had it before so tested early. I have night time insulin as my fasting levels were high even with Metformin. They will probably try that first and it can be enough. I will probably need insulin with meals eventually as it gets worse until about 32 weeks with hormones but so far diet is ok for me. Some people manage without any medication.
Try not to worry too much. If you've caught it early and keep sugars under control then you shouldn't get any ill effects on baby. You would get extra growth scans to check. There is a risk of type 2 later but you will be tested for that and diet and exercise will help.

It's not great but better than not knowing. X

GC2023 · 23/02/2023 10:43

@AnxiousAnnie94 I've had the same thing! Only when laying down and at a certain angle. I read it could be tinnitus but it did worry me. Let me know if your midwife's says anything

AnxiousAnnie94 · 23/02/2023 12:29

@GC2023 mine is mainly when laying or sitting down. Will definitely let you know what they say. I'm sure it's nothing, but doesn't stop me worrying 🤣

rach971 · 23/02/2023 14:37

@RandomCatGenerator That's amazing, one step at a time. So pleased you've got an appointment 🥰

Rutennotou · 23/02/2023 23:17

Awww @RandomCatGenerator I'm glad you have an appointment! Take care x

Congrats on all the scans ladies. I'm 21+3 now. Next midwife appointment is 20th March and I have my GD appointment on April 6th. The drink tastes like flat Fanta so I'm not looking forward to that 😬

Feeling movements stronger now!

pizzawinecake · 24/02/2023 09:55

I meant to have a friend come over from Newcastle for the night. I barely get to see her. She said she's loaded with cold and has a slight cough and it's up to me if I still want her to come over (as she knows I'm pregnant)- she has other places she can stay. What would you do, still let her come over? Not sure what to say

Beginning to hate these hormones. I'm sick of crying over the most daft things 😂😂

rach971 · 24/02/2023 11:09

@habiller I'm 18 weeks today and I just read on my pregnancy app that at this stage baby is only awake for 6 hours a day. That coupled with there still being a lot of room for them to move about in there probably explains it. Totally understand the anxiety though

Rutennotou · 24/02/2023 11:35

@pizzawinecake Can you maybe reschedule for kind of soonish if it works for you both? Really crap though! I avoid people when I have even a cold so would be understanding about others doing the same.

@habiller I've gone off some things more than having sickness as such. Been avoiding strong flavoured things for the most part so eating kind of bland.

@rach971 I cried this morning as I had to do housework again 😁

Leezo · 24/02/2023 14:05

@hahabiller I am 20+2 and have also felt waves of nausea for the last 2 days. I've heard you can get a resurgence of any symptom at any time. My constipation is also pretty bad which sometimes affects the way I feel about food.
Re. Movements, some days this kid is rocking like crazy and other times I really need to lie/sit down in a quiet room and properly concentrate to see if I can feel anything. MW says not to worry at this stage as we're not far enough on for strong regular movements but have offered me to just pop in at any stage and she would run a Doppler over to check HB for us which was super helpful!

BackOfTheMum5net · 24/02/2023 15:07

@habiller Yes, I've added 'lack of movement' to my list of things to worry about since our scan on Monday! Consultant said to get to know the pattern of movement, I suppose that should be a developing thing rather than something that's very obvious right now (I'm 20+ 4 also).
So that's a very reassuring fact, @rach971 ! Baby is having a lovely nap. I've just been for a swim, and a wonder if he got seasickness or if he's immune, floating in fluids all day? He did seem a bit wiggly while I was swimming...

Morning ladies, just a heads up / trigger warming - I watched episode 1 of a new show on BBC 1 last night ‘beyond paradise’ it’s a police whodunnit thing, spin off of death in paradise which is all very lighthearted. Anyway what I wasn’t prepared for was you see someone have a miscarriage in this episode. I actually think it’s good to make the topic less taboo but caught me off guard, and I struggled with it. I’m prob feeling extra sensitive as have our 20 week scan Mon and I’ve had previous losses, but just want to forward others!

I've got real pelvic pain today after parkrun this morning. Feel like an old woman when moving. Hoped I would get further before having this.

RandomCatGenerator · 25/02/2023 23:11

Is anyone else getting sore boobs? I don’t remember this from last time. Really quite stabby pains around the nipples, on both breasts? Any idea how to make it better?

@nicc1000 I can empathise, I too feel like an old woman. Hoped to get at least to third trimester first!

Thank you for the warning @dunkedbiscuit. I am having anxiety dreams about miscarrying, definitely need to be in the right frame of mind to watch anything touching on it.

@habiller i am so sorry for your loss
