I know junk food isn't ideal and I've been really healthy so far so just want to treat myself. Do you know if we can have Big Macs? 🤔 craving it SOOO bad but worried the sauce or cheese won't be pasteurised! Thank you

Yes

Just ignore them, littlepeanuthopes. Nobody deserves to be slapped down for asking a question and they're not worthy of your attention or a response. BrewThere's an epidemic of them; all can be safely ignored. Grin

Unpasteurised cheeses tend to be artisan produced cheese - I'm sure the McDonald's cheese slices have enough chemicals to kill off any lurking bacteria .

I'm really glad not to be pregnant now; there's so much conflicting information out there. I knew about cheese and pate but not the ice cream!

I do like those cheese slices though, not specifically McD's but flat, orange and plasticky... delicious Grin

There's nothing wrong with ice cream and you can eat it

Unpasteurised cheeses can be made safe by cooking them. Same with cured meats - cook and eat them on pizza or in pasta, etc

Interesting because in Australia soft serve ice cream is on the don't eat list.

The PP is incorrect.

same as in Australia. Nhs advises against soft scoop (unless from a supermarket)

Feef83 · 26/11/2022 09:48

Which is why I advised OP to go straight to nhs website when it comes to dietary concerns

Feef83 · 26/11/2022 09:50

Pasteurised ice cream fine

mr whippy isn’t though

Can you link to the nhs advice saying to avoid it then?

McDonald mcflurries and ice creams are pasteurised and their machines go through cleaning cycles. I cannot find them on the NHS avoid list

Pasteurised ice creams ✔️

According to the NHS, branded ice creams bought from the supermarket typically contain pasteurised ingredients and so are considered safe from salmonella poisoning. 'Mr Whippy' ice creams from vans and kiosks are a no-go as the machines are potential carriers of listeria, says Dr Rana Conway, pregnancy nutritionist.

Flooper · 26/11/2022 13:01

Soft serve ice-cream from McDonalds will be fine. Whatever about the nutritional quality of the food, their restaurants are kept squeaky clean. Soft serve ice-cream from a van whose hygiene standards might not be quite as scrupulous is another matter.

dementedpixie · 26/11/2022 13:02

That's not the nhs website
That's an article
I want you to link to it on the actual NHS website as thats what people refer to when looking for the guidelines as to what to avoid/be careful about in pregnancy

dementedpixie · 26/11/2022 13:03

And McDonalds is not a van or a kiosk

Feef83 · 26/11/2022 13:48

It explicitly states on NHS website that pasteurised ice cream is safe ie unpasteurised not safe

the problem with the machine means that if machine not properly cleaned, the milk is no longer regarded as pasteurised and so danger of listeria.

dementedpixie · 26/11/2022 13:50

Mcdonalds uses pasteurised ingredients and the machines auto clean to prevent contamination. They are therefore not contraindicated on the nhs site. It is a myth that you shouldn't eat soft serve ice cream.

Feef83 · 26/11/2022 13:53

I’ll go with NHS on this one!

I will bow out now. All the best OP!
