Can I eat a Big Mac?

I know junk food isn't ideal and I've been really healthy so far so just want to treat myself. Do you know if we can have Big Macs? 🤔 craving it SOOO bad but worried the sauce or cheese won't be pasteurised! Thank you

Thank you 😊 ! Feel like I've gone off asking any questions for a while! Some come out silly to the braver and more experienced. Going to try to just try and not worry about things now! X

Best to look on nhs website first then if you don’t want to ask.

I guess this all makes sense. Just didn't even really know what pasteurised means so thought I'd ask. It's all new to me. I have my answer now thanks.

The answer is, eat what you like within reason.

Fwiw I get maccas cravings when I've been on a health drive or I've been unwell.

I actually think your body is sometimes telling you, you need the 'unhealthy' stuff sometimes because you've missed out on the salt and grease in your diet and actually you need a certain amount of these.

The best food in the world when you've felt queasy is a maccas. I'm 100% serious. It's my go to food when I've been feeling really run down.

I would suggest you think about 'balanced' diet during pregnancy rather than purely a 'healthy' one. Make sure you aren't missing out of vitamins that you might find in a burger but not a leafy salad (yes I'm being serious)

This is a place for good vibes only @Feef83

If you can’t eat a Big Mac (plus large fries and a strawberry milkshake) when you’re pregnant, when can you eat one???

Read up on the NHS website. It lists all the foods you should avoid and explains why x

rmonroe8 · 24/11/2022 16:40

I'm pretty sure nearly every woman has had a mcdonald's atleast once whilst they have been pregnant. Stop worrying

bigfamilygrowingupfast · 24/11/2022 16:40

I hope so as I've been having loads 🤣🤣

rickandmorts · 24/11/2022 16:42

Honestly your pregnancy is going to be long and boring if you eat super healthy throughout and deprive yourself of anything nice. I tried to eat intuitively and give my body what it craved. First 14 weeks I was so sick I could only pick at beige stuff. Then I got my appetite back and ate healthier but would still have a McDonald's if I wanted one. I also ate rare steak, sushi, deli meats etc. You're just at a slightly higher risk of food poisoning when pregnant but for me the benefit outweighed the risk 😊 I also drank coffee which I know some people freak out at!

rickandmorts · 24/11/2022 16:44

Agreed @RedToothBrush. I was so sick in the first trimester and my body craved those salty mcds fries so much!! Think I was desperately trying to replenish all the salt I'd lost. I'd literally be sat in my car inhaling them like a woman possessed because it was the only time I felt hungry 🙈

Feef83 · 24/11/2022 16:18

I have never heard of anyone getting food poisoning for Macdonalds!

Because it isn't really food!

romdowa · 24/11/2022 17:05

The vomiting started for me at 5 weeks . I was so sick , so enjoy all the foods for those of us who couldn't!

Lanzy · 24/11/2022 17:06

Since my morning sickness passed at 15 weeks, I've been having Big Macs! so should be all fine. Love them!!

gogohmm · 24/11/2022 17:06

@littlepeanuthopes

Try to relax. Avoid alcohol (alcohol in cooking won't hurt your baby though), and avoid foods with high risk of food poisoning basically eg soft cheese like Camembert, cured meats that have been open more than one day. Limit large fish like tuna to 2 times per week.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 24/11/2022 17:07

For the first few months I just ate whatever I could keep down. I didn't give a shiny shite what was in it, as long as I didn't have to look at it in reverse.

Seriously. Eat a bloody pizza.

gamerchick · 24/11/2022 17:09

Unfortunately, I think you’ll be unable to find anywhere where food has been more disinfected to death than McDonalds.

So much so that if you stick it on top of a cupboard for a year it'll still look basically the same as the day you bought it. Even flies don't touch it.

2 weeks of eating the healthiest meals while craving pizza and burgers and wine feels like forever

That is why you are going to need to cut yourself some slack! It will be a long hard slog otherwise. As long as you are taking vitamins and generally healthy, let yourself have some pizza/burgers whatever. If you get hyperemesis, you are going to have to eat whatever you can keep down. I spent a significant amount of time this pregnancy living off plain bagels. During my last pregnancy it was McDonalds milkshake.

Firen · 24/11/2022 17:30

I’m not it’s even actual cheese, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

chickidychick · 24/11/2022 17:31

Yes

HereComeTheGrannies · 24/11/2022 17:37

Go for it. But McDonald’s and my pregnancy didn’t go well. Had 2 big tastys on 2 different occasions and was sick… can’t look at them since and they were my favourite 🥲

PennyDeadful · 24/11/2022 17:40

I ate sushi and medium rare steak Shock

She was born at 36 weeks and 4 days - very healthy and happy baby.

Obviously there's some NONOs like alcohol and anything dangerous but enjoy what you like within reason.

Congratulations 🥳

BeanieTeen · 24/11/2022 17:40

You’re 5 weeks pregnant - eat EVERYTHING you can now, horrendous nausea and vomiting may be just around the corner. I remember thinking I’d be super healthy when I found out I was pregnant and then I spent weeks 6 - 15 eating pretty much only white toast and grapes…
Enjoy your Big Mac - maybe even have two?

Also, what kind of fancy pants non-pasteurised artisan cheese is going on a Big Mac?? It’s just orange plastic cheese 😂 It’s probably more bacteria resistant than an anti-bac wipe. Maybe not the healthiest thing to eat but you’re certainly safe in terms of catching food poisoning from it.

MrsH497 · 24/11/2022 17:42

I was devastated when my DH ordered me a McDonald's as per my craving 2 mouthfuls and I spectacularly threw up (thanks HG) so was put off for ages

I now want a McDonald's- lunch tomorrow I think!

Sleepygrumpyandnothappy · 24/11/2022 17:43

Classica · 24/11/2022 16:07

you're familiar with the squares of plastic cheese they use in McDonalds and you think they might not be pasteurised?

This. I really can’t get over someone thinking McDonald’s could use unpasteurised cheese.

rippleraspberry · 24/11/2022 17:47

It will be fine OP. McDonalds have the same hygiene standards as any other restaurant and everything is pasteurised.

The only thing I've ever heard recommended against in pregnancy is the milkshakes because of a very small risk of listeria, as the machines are difficult to clean (same with Mr Whippy ice cream). But a Big Mac will be fine!
