Anyone told boy at 20 weeks but had a girl?

NIPT done at 14+6 says girl
Anatomy scan today said boy… they even got someone else to check!

Can the scan be wrong? I would have thought at this point it’s accurate, but then I thought that about NIPT as well.

I did not have NIPT OP, but I was told I was having a boy at both of my 20 weeks scans, and yes I was lucky and had lovely, healthy sons both times.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 22/11/2022 17:56

It’s more likely for the scan to be wrong than for the NIPT to be wrong, statistically; but if two people have checked and they are sure it’s not a swollen girl, you could just be in the very tiny minority of NIPTs that don’t correctly identify sex.

It was a long time ago so tech wasn't as good, but my mum was told I was a boy at twenty weeks. I'm not.

RandomMess · 22/11/2022 17:59

I only know people told girl and had a boy

caringcarer · 22/11/2022 18:08

I know a lady told she was having a girl and it was from scan but several years ago and don't recall how many weeks scan was. She had a boy. She had a shock when had a son though. She had bought quite a lot of pink clothes as she was excited to be having a girl as already had 2 boys.

Topseyt123 · 22/11/2022 18:10

I was always told that there had to be a margin for error with scans.

I had three babies. With the first one I was booked at a hospital where there was a policy of not telling patients what they were having unless amniocentesis revealed it. I had a girl.

With the next two we had moved house and were under a different hospital, so could ask. On both occasions I was told, with the caveat that it could sometimes be inaccurate, that I was expecting girls. I duly gave birth to girls on both occasions.

I don't know how much things have changed. My youngest is 20 now.

My ddil has just been told it's a boy. I hope that's right as we're planning on going out shopping for baby clothes.

turkeyboots · 22/11/2022 18:12

I was told DD was going to be a boy. She wasn't and looked lovely in her blue onsies!

This is my understanding as well

Oh really? Did you see clear boy parts? Was this at 20 weeks too?

I really don’t mind which it is, I just want to know - there was some talk of intersex conditions which the hospital will get in touch with me about so feeling worried about that too Sad

My friend was told girl at 20 weeks and again a few weeks later as she had regular scans then at 28 weeks was told it was definitely a boy, the evidence was clear. She had a lot of pink stuff, she had a boy.

turkeyboots · 22/11/2022 19:06

No, we saw nothing. I could barely make out a head, so we believed what we were told. With DS it was all very clear, no confusion there.

FlounderingFruitcake · 22/11/2022 19:15

A colleague of mine was told girl from Harmony (NIPT) but 20 week scan showed boy. It was indeed a healthy baby boy, apparently it can happen that there can be enough fetal DNA to get a result but not enough to pick up the Y chromosome?! Her Harmony was done at like 10-11 weeks though, not sure if that was why and if it’s comparable to your situation, but it shows that it definitely can happen!

Cuppasoupmonster · 22/11/2022 19:17

Thanks @FlounderingFruitcake i had mine at 14+6 and got 10% fetal fraction so would assume it was very accurate as not borderline!

I know someone who was told boy. She was a girl.

PutOnAHappyFace · 22/11/2022 19:19

I thought the nipt can pick up your DNA as well so a girl result is not 100% certain it's the babies and not yours.

GreekGod · 22/11/2022 19:20

Yes, me. I was told nineteen years ago, I was having a boy at 20 weeks but ended up having a girl. A bit embarrassing especially as we told everyone on the planet.

The paperwork says 99.3% accurate 🤷🏼‍♀️ so not
impossible but extremely rare to get it wrong. The hospital hasn’t seen this before and isn’t sure what to make of it. We have a repeat scan and blood test tonight. Just hoping so much the scan yesterday was looking at cord or swollen bits or something 😢

PutOnAHappyFace · 23/11/2022 11:28

Hoping you are just the tiny percentage that it's wrong and thats all it is.

Fingers crossed for you.

PutOnAHappyFace · 23/11/2022 11:29

Or the scan yesterday was wrong, I was told boy and had a girl but i was around 32 weeks so it can be harder then.

xogossipgirlxo · 23/11/2022 11:38

My friend was told she's having a boy and she found out it's a girl at the end of pregnancy (in Poland you get more scans, one is at the very end).

Porridgeislife · 23/11/2022 11:48

PutOnAHappyFace · 22/11/2022 19:19

I thought the nipt can pick up your DNA as well so a girl result is not 100% certain it's the babies and not yours.

That can be true with some at home early peek tests but only for boys (eg Dad/son or dog has contaminated sample).

The NIPT returns girl by default, mum’s blood doesn’t have any Y chromosomes unless she’s carrying a son.

10% fetal DNA is well above threshold so should be correct.

Tarkan · 23/11/2022 11:49

When I had DD1 around 19 years ago I was in our tiny local hospital with one other mum, she had been told boy during her scan but was there feeding her lovely new DD. She already had a 2 year old DS so hadn't bought anything new for the baby as she was planning on using everything she still had from him. I even helped her name her DD as they had only looked at boy names (their favourite boy name had a common female equivalent so that's what they went for as they hadn't considered it until I suggested it, think along the lines of George/Georgia).

babyjellyfish · 23/11/2022 12:00

Hmm that is odd.

The NIPT is more likely to be wrong if it says boy because the sample might be contaminated with someone else's DNA and show a Y chromosome. If there's no Y chromosome present you should be having a girl.

But the scan is more likely to be wrong if it says girl because a boy might just be crossing his legs, whereas if male genitalia are clearly visualised then there's no doubt. It's possible to make a mistake though, for example, if the cord is in the way.

How clear are your images? Can you get another scan done?

If not I would work on the basis that you are having a surprise. If you do end up having a boy you might want to mention this to your doctor and see if you can get his karyotype checked.

Cuppasoupmonster · 23/11/2022 12:06

The sonographer really thought it was boy parts and even got someone else to check who said it definitely was. Ive got a low lying placenta though so wondering if that means the cord is coming from a different place and confusing things? If you know what I mean. The hospital said I have to have a repeat NIPT and have booked me an appointment with the screening midwife next week to discuss the results. I’m so upset and in shock.
