Anyone told boy at 20 weeks but had a girl?

NIPT done at 14+6 says girl
Anatomy scan today said boy… they even got someone else to check!

Can the scan be wrong? I would have thought at this point it’s accurate, but then I thought that about NIPT as well.

@MargotChateau how did they decide the baby wasn’t intersex after the birth?

MargotChateau · 23/11/2022 13:13

@lawofselfish she said it here

“I really don’t mind which it is, I just want to know - there was some talk of intersex conditions which the hospital will get in touch with me about so feeling worried about that too”

So OP doesn’t mind which sex the baby is, she just want to know which one it is as she has been told there is a possibility of an intersex baby.

No one is saying either sex or intersex are unwanted or bad, but that living with the unknown is a very stressful especially when your hormones are on overdrive.

Having hand held a dear friend through the very same situation I think posters need to be gentle and kind to OP.

OP, I hope you are okay, DM and let me know if you need me to ask my friend any questions if that helps, (she lives in Australia so not NHS but she had the same NIPT test and the scans will be the same world wide).

I was told girl at 20 weeks, at the 36 week scan they changed their minds and he was a boy. I had a boy. This was fairly recently, so they do get it wrong occasionally x

Fraaahnces · 23/11/2022 13:14

@Cuppasoupmonster NIPT is a very new science compared to sonography. The levels of B-HCG are much higher in early pregnancy and can vary greatly between women. I imagine that this could also affect the readings. If an early NIPT was contrary to a later scan I would assume the scan was the more accurate of the two.

Cuppasoupmonster · 23/11/2022 13:16

Thank you @MargotChateau xx I will PM you shortly, thank you for your kind offer.

@Fraaahnces if it had been, for instance, 10 weeks and borderline fetal DNA I could see more room for error. But I had it at 14+6 and got 10% fraction - they need 4% for an accurate result.

Not to be graphic but the baby’s genitals fit the typical definitions of female. I think also she was chromosomaly tested and that came back female sex too.

MargotChateau · 23/11/2022 13:19

You’re welcome, no hurry as I generally talk to my Aussie friends about 9pm our time. So think of what you’d like to ask and message me in the evening and I’ll get in touch with her later. 💐 Big hand hold.

So you're a woman so XX chromosome. the NIPT looks in your blood if there are traces of XY which wouldn't come from baby boy's DNA (blood is exchanged through placenta). The NIPT only saw XX so assumed girl. I would have thought that in most intersex conditions that involve a boy's anatomy you'd have a Y knocking around somewhere in the chromosomes.

I would say NIPT is wrong.
Look for intersex conditions that don't have a Y. I only know XXX but that makes a baby with girl anatomy so not that.

Which WOULD come from baby boy DNA (sorry!)

Cuppasoupmonster · 23/11/2022 13:28

@Mamoun the vast majority of anecdotal evidence of this online is male NIPT, female scan, and baby turns out to be a girl. Which they put down to vanishing twins leaving DNA behind etc. There are very few examples of female NIPT, ‘male’ scan. In part I wanted to write this all down so somebody can find it in future if they need to! I’m given to understand the only 100% accurate way of seeing if it has such a condition is an amniocentesis.

No. Both boys. I even got them to double check on all my GDM growth scans.

Definitely boys! (I was heartbroken both times) Gender disappointment is a real thing.

Yes, I know I'm lucky to have conceived two easily but allowed to process my own "you're not having a daughter ever"

I am sorry OP.
Hope the wait isn't too painful.
Let us know when you find out.

Also I wonder whether 14 weeks + is too late for NIPT.
I always did mine around 10/11 weeks and I seem to remember the window is small.

Jusmakingit · 23/11/2022 13:36

I constantly think about this, preg with second, had gender scan at 15/16 weeks told is a girl then at my 20 week scan at the hospital got them to check and said girl so i hope it is. My DD is very excited to have a little sister ... not sure how long that will last when they are arguing over toys lol but there always that doubt it will be a boy.

Guess just buy neutral clothing?

I don’t think there’s any time limit on it, apparently it’s actually more accurate the further on you are as the DNA increases.

OP I had issues with NIPT determining sex compared to scans. I opted to wait and see but was worried about intersex which is completely understandable. Please remember that these tests and scans are not exact, there is margin for error and I hope this is how your situation turns out and you get a healthy baby x

Mamoun · 23/11/2022 14:01

@Cuppasoupmonster you're right I have just looked it up...

XXX isn't an intersex condition! My daughter has it

It goes on a tiny measurement of the spine so angles etc can be misread.

Mine was girl NIPT then a boy, I have a beautiful healthy boy but it was a surprise!!!!! Doctors told me that NIPT seems to cause more stress than anything, would never do it again.

Cuppasoupmonster · 23/11/2022 14:59

How lovely @Newmum110 thats all I want, a healthy baby of either sex.
