Anyone told boy at 20 weeks but had a girl?

NIPT done at 14+6 says girl
Anatomy scan today said boy… they even got someone else to check!

Can the scan be wrong? I would have thought at this point it’s accurate, but then I thought that about NIPT as well.

The hospital also suggested this can rarely happen when the fetal fraction is borderline but at 10% its more than double what they need for a clear result. I’m hoping and praying the scan was wrong yesterday 😢 she did say i had placenta previa and to expect a c section but the obstetrician after laughed and said it would definitely move and isn’t worried. So I’m wondering how good she really was.

@Cuppasoupmonster try not to worry. My friend had exactly the same experience as you. She was told the baby was intersex (nipt said one thing, multiple scans another), and gave the baby a unisex name. When babe was born, it was a girl, not intersex at all. She had spent her entire pregnancy panicking for nothing, really felt for her, as we had many late night calls when her anxiety was set off by worry. So please try not to worry op, as hard as it is.

The sonographer really thought it was boy parts and even got someone else to check who said it definitely was. Ive got a low lying placenta though so wondering if that means the cord is coming from a different place and confusing things? If you know what I mean. The hospital said I have to have a repeat NIPT and have booked me an appointment with the screening midwife next week to discuss the results. I’m so upset and in shock.

What are you so upset about?

Anon778833 · 23/11/2022 12:15

Yes, I was told boy by the NHS but I had a private scan to check and it was a girl!

PutOnAHappyFace · 23/11/2022 12:17

Ahh @Porridgeislife thank you for the correct information.

Thank you for your reply, was she told girl on NIPT or boy? I’m trying to stay calm but it’s hard.

What are you so upset about?

That my baby has a rare chromosomal condition? Wouldn’t you be, if a consultant had told you this might be a possibility? 🙄

Was it clear at your NHS scan? Sorry for all the frantic questions, it’s just so hard to find real life examples of this.

@Cuppasoupmonster the same as you, boy on nipt, girl at the scans, born a girl.

Of course you are worried, I’m currently 8 months pregnant with a high risk pregnancy so I empathise in spades. Part of being pregnant and a mum to be, is worrying. Just try to look after yourself as best you can, and know that the most likely option is that you are in the percentage where tests/scans have errors and get it wrong.

Sending a hug and a hand hold.

Cuppasoupmonster · 23/11/2022 12:40

Oh I’m the other way round - girl on NIPT, boy on scans. Thank you so much 💐

@Cuppasoupmonster apologies dyslexic, and got it the wrong way round 🤦🏻‍♀️

Girl on nipt, boy on scan, born a girl. Apologies again.

No worries at all. I’m really grateful for your reassurance. Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes smoothly as can be 💐

Me too, boy on scan, beautiful girl on arrival. It was over 35 years ago and scans have no doubt improved.

mondaytosunday · 23/11/2022 12:52

Sil was told girl and she was thrilled after having two boys. Her third son wore pink clothes for first three months....

@lawofselfish

you wouldn't be upset if you were told your baby was intersex?

I bloody well would be.

lawofselfish · 23/11/2022 13:03

@SkylightSkylight OP hasn't been told her baby is intersex, has she?

Does the sex of the baby really matter to you that much? So long as baby is born healthy isn’t that all that counts. I know of a few babys born with complications so for me the health of my babies was my biggest worry.

Don't think the Op is worried about what sex

I think she is worried about a chromosome problem with the baby.

Where did you mention you were told that?

Smearywindowsagain · 23/11/2022 13:07

There was a thread on here a couple of years ago where the nipt was wrong but I think the scan is more likely to be wrong. It sounds worrying for you. I hope you get some answers soon

SkylightSkylight · 23/11/2022 13:08

Many many years ago (1990's) I owned a baby shop. People would come in and buy pink/blue things, on the back of a scan.

it was a common occurrence for them to come back wanting to swap!!

thankfully things have improved loads now.

@Cuppasoupmonster I'm sorry it's so worrying!! Second one sounds a bit incompetent though. Try not to worry, so many people get told stuff that turns out to be wrong, but they've sadly spent their entire pregnancy worried.

hopefully you'll get a better idea soon xx

FlounderingFruitcake · 23/11/2022 13:08

Can people not read? OP’s second post:
I really don’t mind which it is, I just want to know - there was some talk of intersex conditions which the hospital will get in touch with me about so feeling worried about that too

Who wouldn’t be worried to hear talk of intersex conditions?? This obviously isn’t a shallow case of do I get the pink or blue colour pack for the pram I’ve been eyeing.
