Hi there! I'm having my second baby in 6 weeks and had an underactive thyroid diagnosed a couple of years before my first (who's now 3).
I wouldn't adjust thyroxine levels myself without having offcial figures / blood results as I personally needed NO adjustment until the last two weeks last time, and still nothing this time either. All results keep coming back fine. Docs seem a bit surprised but it seems to happen to some.
I've got Hashimoto's disease btw. What about you??
Haven't had any trouble conceiving at all, quite the opposite and then no prob during pregnancies, just loads of bloodtests! Good luck and congratulations!

ladylush · 06/02/2008 08:21

That's good nez. I believe the thyroid condition (pre-diagnosis and treatment) caused some or all of my m/c and is now causing problems ttc as I have always got pg straight away before.

Sambrads what test did your dr do to establish if you were ovulating?

sambrads · 06/02/2008 10:03

i got bloods tests done it was a horamone test . you should ask your doctor to do one for you .
thanks so much nezelette for the reasurrance its great the doc has told me to stay on my tablets and not worry but i am so nervous of something happening because i have read lots of bad stories on the net.

Was it FSH blood test? Folicle stimulating hormone?

I rang the surgery for my thyroid anti-bodies result and they are normal so I'm pleased.

sambrads · 06/02/2008 14:00

hi ya i just seen her writing down a note for the nurse to do a horomone test .

what is a thyroid anti-bodies test??

i just get my blood checked every 6 weeks is that what your talking bout??

anti-thyroid anti-bodies I think it is called. This is something some people have in addition to hypo/hyperthyroidism and it is an extra risk factor for m/c if thyroid untreated. Also if someone has subclincial hypothyroidism but positive antibodies, they are at greater risk of becoming hyper/hypo than someone who doesn't have them. Positive AtA can also indicate other auto immune problems.

What is clomid? I got an underactive thyroid after birth of my DS. Kind of stable now on 50mcg. Was feeling very anxious and highly strung when my dose got upped from 25 to 50mcg. Felt all gloomy as well. When you have your levels upped during pregnancy does it cause all sorts of emotional problems such as I experienced on upping my dose? I didn't even know undercative thyroid could affect chances of conceiving or possibly cause miscarriage or birth defects! I am hoping to try for another dc this year. What do I need to know!?

sambrads · 08/02/2008 08:20

hi ya coochy dont worry everything should be ok as i am the only person i know that has ahd problems concieveing

your doc will take good care of you and monitor you more while pregnant and you should have a normal healthy pregnancy

clomid is a fertility drug used to help ovulaton

Coochy if your condition is stable you should be ok ttc. I've been ttc for 6 mths since my last m/c. For me, that is a long time as I always conceived immediately before. Sometimes hypothyroidism leads to raised Prolactin levels and ovuation can stop. If you have reason to believe you might not be ovuating, see your gp as like in Sambrad's case, they can prescribe clomid to stimuate ovulation.

Leonie - my T4 was apparently ok at 15, but my TSH was almost 7. Though subclinical, I feel tons better since starting Thyroxine. This goes to show that everyone has an individual range and that textbook ranges are irrelevant. Many endocrinologists believe that women are unlikely to conceive with a TSH > 2.

That's interesting Leonie. The doctor wouldn't have treated me unless I'd made an issue about multiple m/c and ttc.

I agree Leonie. I would've gone private if the dr didn't treat me. Have you had a baby since being diagnosed?

ladylush · 08/02/2008 14:32

Just had a look at your profile and saw you're due in September. Congrats Good to hear success stories

Not a relative of Frank Skinner is he A fellow Brummie Amour sounds interesting. I was having two periods a month two cycles before last, but this one was bang on 28 days, positive opk on cd15 and normal period bleeding (medium, heavy, heavy, light) so far - I'm on Cd4. The dr didn't ask for T4 bloods so I don't know how much they increased by. I might have to ask her to alter my blood test form for 4 weeks time so that I can get the T4 results too.
