What size clothes for a big baby?

Currently measuring to be over 10lbs at birth, although I appreciate its not always accurate.

What size is it likely he’ll wear at birth - newborn or 0-3? Just packing the bag and not sure

I had 2 big babies (one almost 10 pounds and the second almost 11 pounds). I just put them straight into 0-3 months

Burgerqueenbee · 28/10/2022 15:23

I would take both, growth scans are not always correct.

randomsabreuse · 28/10/2022 15:32

0-1 months or 0-3 months would cover it. I'd also check sizes because some newborn is up to 7 or 8 lbs while other brands were up to 10lbs (and didn't have 0-1).

It also depends on proportions. My 6.13 girl was all leg and needed tiny baby sizes for the first 2 weeks. My friend's 6lb 4 baby went straight into newborn and was too big for the tiny baby sizes even though he weighed less than my DD. My 8lb baby was mostly in big newborn or 0-1 from birth.

BuffaloCauliflower · 28/10/2022 15:34

Growth scans are pretty inaccurate, but I’d take up to 1 month and 0-3.

BurningBenches · 28/10/2022 15:44

I've had 5.

1 and 2 were just under 9lb and squeezed into newborn for about a week.

3, 4 and 5 ranged from 9lb-9lb10 and went straight to 0-3. 3 was nearly lb bigger than 1 and 2 and I didnt bother buying newborn at all for 4 or 5.

DC4 was estimated to be 9lb at 37wks by scan so was induced at 40wks as he was predicted to be over 11lb if left to 42wks (1, 3 and 5 also induced so I accepted based on the fact he'd likely have been induced 2 weeks later) he was in fact only 9lb5 at 40wks, but did have positional talipes from being long and squished. Had he gone to 42wks like his siblings he would have likely been 10lb5.

Also depends on the shop as they size differently

@PandaOrLion My daughter was 11lb 7oz and there would have been no way I could get a newborn size on her, but she was extremely large. I’d take a couple of each if I was you so at least you can get her dressed and then send someone to bring more of the right size.

theginge · 28/10/2022 15:48

I bought my 10lb 11oz newborn home in a 'up to 7lb' sleepsuit!! I got him in it super snugly but it never got a second wear!! 0-3 was still too big for the first few weeks.

SalviaOfficinalis · 28/10/2022 15:51

Newborn will probably only be worn once or twice so seems a bit of a waste.
I’d go 0-3 on the principle it won’t matter if it’s a bit big.
New babies are so squishy and curled up that it won’t really matter.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 28/10/2022 16:01

My babies between 8-9lbs both went straight into 0-3 months.
My early twins needed smaller sizes, but ime for bigger babies newborn size is a waste of money.
In any case - it doesn't matter much is you take 0-3 to hospital and then find you need a bit smaller, baby won't come to any harm from a rolled up sleeve or loose leg until you're home. Packing lighter is better imo.

40andfit · 28/10/2022 16:06

My first was 9lb 9oz. We ended up in hospital until she was 10/11days (I can’t remember which now!). By the time we left her vests were too short but even now I have to buy her swimsuits in the size up.

cavily1806 · 28/10/2022 16:07

Take both. They predicted dd would be 8.5lbs. She was 5lb 13. Even newborn was massive on her

PinkPlantCase · 28/10/2022 16:10

Remember that they loose weight to start with too!

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 28/10/2022 16:22

DD was 9lb 10 and had to go straight into 0-3 months. DS was 6lb 14 and Newborn was too big for him, DH had to go and get some Tiny Baby babygroes for him.

MuggleMe · 28/10/2022 16:31

I had a 9lb baby and found up to 1 month range handy for the first few weeks. Some 0-3month are massive (looking at you sainsbo).

ShowOfHands · 28/10/2022 16:34

I was told DS was big. He was 6lbs and newborn didn't fit him. A friend gave us some early baby clothes which he stayed in for several weeks. He was really dinky despite a fairly average weight.

MovingOnUpp · 28/10/2022 16:35

0-3

swimmingincustard · 28/10/2022 16:48

Up to one month or 0-3 months, DCs were 9.6 and 9.12. They didn't fit in newborn clothes.

Cw112 · 28/10/2022 16:57

It's looking like ours will be a wee chunk when they arrive too so I've packed 1-2xnewborn outfits just incase and then 5x0-3 outfits. It's hard to know for sure so cover your bases.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/10/2022 16:59

DS was measuring over 10lb. He was 7lb 10 Oz!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/10/2022 17:01

... posted too soon.

I took lots of 0-3 month clothes to hospital, but dh had to go and get some newborn size, which did DS for about 6 or 6 weeks.

PandaOrLion · 28/10/2022 17:02

This is so helpful- thank you! We’ve been given most of our clothes so I’d like him to wear the one newborn outfit I’ve bought if possible! It’s good to hear other peoples stories

DD was 9lb 2oz, at her last scan radiographer was it her at 8lb 7oz. She was in 1mo for a few days and then straight into 0-3. Also, Next are the biggest fitting. Tesco, ASDA and M & S are all smaller fitting I found

tunthebloodyalarmoff · 28/10/2022 17:07

New born will fit 0 to 3 lots of growing room

Montague22 · 28/10/2022 17:08

A few in 0-1 would probably be perfect for the first month. But don’t get too many. Or get footless ones at least. Then I’d go for 0-3.

DowntonCrabby · 28/10/2022 17:10

Mine were 9lb9oz and 11lb as newborns and 0-3 was great, still enough growing room that meant they looked newborn once I’d taken them home and couldn’t compare them to the teeny ones in hospital Grin
