I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Thumberline
Oh dear. I believe it is meant to start working within an hour, and your message was after I had called into this thread yesterday. Has the doctor advised you to increase the dose?

OP posts:
IHaveBeenFallingFor30Minutes · 14/12/2022 13:50

I hope everyone is doing ok Flowers

I have just had another growth scan and baby is above the 100th centile for estimated weight so I have a c section booked in for 3rd February. The end is in sight and I can't wait for it to be over.

I am thinking of all those who are early in pregnancy and suffering. You won't know how, but you will get to the other side of this. HG is awful but massive thanks to @LucindaE for this thread it is invaluable for advice and just to have a general moan.

LucindaE · 14/12/2022 19:00

IHaveBeenFallingFor30Minutes Thank you so much for your kind words and that encouraging message. I am not sure if you can answer Thumbeline's query about how long it takes for Ondansetron to be effective? I am concerned she may have been admitted. I hope it is generally quiet on here is a good rather than a bad sign.

OP posts:
IHaveBeenFallingFor30Minutes · 14/12/2022 19:27

Thank you @LucindaE

@Thumberline I am on ondansetron and have been since about 6 weeks. It usually works within the hour. What dose are you on? I started on 2x4mg a day and that wasn't helping at all. I ended up being admitted where they put me on 3x8mg. This, alongside 2x50mg cyclizine and the steroids, kept the vomiting at bay for a while. It might be worth trying it in combination with another anti sickness or if you can't keep anything down please go to hospital where they can get you back on an even keel.

Thumberline · 14/12/2022 20:05

Thank you @LucindaE and @IHaveBeenFallingFor30Minutes I am still plodding on at home, me and dd have horrible colds to top off my misery. I was having horrible headaches the past couple of days and even more lethargic than usual so had a day medication free and did manage to eat a little- apples are hitting the spot at the moment.

IHaveBeenFallingFor30Minutes · 14/12/2022 20:33

@Thumberline Flowers

I am glad you've found something that you can eat for the moment. I'm sorry to hear about your cold as well - there is a rotten one going round now!

I'm going back to hospital for the second time today with a water infection - think baby loves the place....!

LucindaE · 14/12/2022 21:32

IHaveBeenFallingFor30Minutes Thank you so much for that great advice for
Thumberline. Sorry to hear about colds. Thumberline I am so glad you have avoided being admitted. One of these days I will get your name right! Sorry to hear about colds.

IHaveBeenFallingFor30Minutes Aagh: just seen your having to go back to hospital for the UTI, and a second time today. That is dismal. Much sympathies. And in this weather...

Hi all, haven't been on here in a while,
I had a really positive couple of weeks but suddenly went down hill very very quickly as soon as I turned 16 weeks and just got home after 2 night stay in hospital to get the sickness under some control.

Feeling mildly better this morning after a decent sleep in my own bed however I've had a left temple headache now on and off for a couple of weeks and it's really bad today. Has anyone else had this with there HG? I've taken some paracetamol to see if that takes the edge off.

LucindaE · 15/12/2022 18:24

izzyroo92 Sorry to hear that things have gone downhill. I got awful migraines up until about 16 weeks, and then they went off. A one sided headache sounds like a migraine. Are you on Ondansetron, as that can give some headaches? A headache on and off for two weeks sounds awful; I do think it might be worth enquiring about it with your doctor(s)(, for reassurance as much as anything. As you are just back from hospital it can't be a dehydration headache. Hormonal surges can cause headaches too, of course.

I decided to wait A&E out for fluids this evening, my urine sample has shown a very faint positive pregnancy test only so rather than fluids waiting on bad news. I feel terrible for thinking it I just hope they can get the pregnancy out quickly so I can get back to looking after my baby and being a functioning human. I just don’t understand if my hcg is so low why am I still so sick?

LucindaE · 16/12/2022 19:49

Thumberline I tried to post yesterday, but for some reason couldn't get into the website. I am really sorry to hear your bad news. I don't know why it is
that some suffer very badly even as the hormonal levels dip. It is understandable that you will feel an element of relief. It is all very traumatic. Much sympathies.

SpringChicken06 · 17/12/2022 21:24

Hi,
Now 25 weeks, and vomiting only twice a morning. Have been discharged from my dietician following weight loss (which i’ve gained all back finally!), but she was concerned with my vomiting especially with it being long term, and stomach acid/bile.
So my question is for those who had it as long as this if you had any long term issues? She pressed on getting in touch with my gp, midwife, dentist etc despite gp already knowing about the HG.
Hope everyone else in their early weeks can get through the toughest times, heart goes out to you.

Thumberline · 18/12/2022 13:28

Thank you @LucindaE so after being told my pregnancy test was faint on Thursday, the doctor decided it was positive so didn’t warrant having a scan. We managed to get in for a private scan this morning and there was a heart beat and baby is measuring 9 weeks and 5 days so no idea what happened at the hospital but very happy. Also the medication is doing the trick now I have had the fluids and anti sickness injection so feeling much more positive!

heartbroken22 · 18/12/2022 13:57

@SpringChicken06 after pregnancy it was okay and I was normal. The only thing that it did was affect my teeth. I had to have one root canal and 3 fillings. One of my tooth broke aswell. Not sure if it was due to not being able to eat properly, having fizzy drinks when sick and not taking vitamins but I was traumatised. This time I'm keeping an eye out on the foods I have. Dentist said it was due to me vomiting all day/night and the acid affected my teeth. Health wise I was fine. I did develop high blood pressure post pregnancy but don't think it was due to the Hg!

heartbroken22 · 18/12/2022 13:58

@Thumberline so happy for you and sorry I was meant to post but didn't want to stress you. A faint positive test can happen once you're further along in your pregnancy. Hope you and baby are okay. Glad you're feeling better x

heartbroken22 · 18/12/2022 14:00

Just checking in myself to let u guys know I'm having trouble taking my vitamins especially my b6. I feel more nausea without the b6 but then vomit when I do take it. Not sure what's going to happen when I have to take aspirin twice a day from next week.

Recoba · 18/12/2022 18:42

@SpringChicken06 I had similar experiences to @heartbroken22 - never even had a filling before at the dentist and then a few months after giving birth had to have root canal on my molars. Really hoping the same thing doesn't happen again this time - last time found it basically impossible to brush my teeth.

SpringChicken06 · 18/12/2022 19:30

Thank you @heartbroken22 and @Recoba! I’ll get in touch with the dentist soon then x

FTMworrier · 18/12/2022 20:02

@SpringChicken06 oh definitely go see the dentist. I couldn’t as my first was during lockdown and when I eventually did I needed eight fillings, I think I’ve had one prior 😫 I was mortified!
they said to me they could prescribe higher fluoride toothpaste to try and help! 🤞🏻 if the sickness starts for me in this pregnancy I will be heading straight to the dentist 🙏🏻

LucindaE · 18/12/2022 20:26

Thumberline That is good news: very happy for you.
SpringChicken06 I hope those who have had it for a long time will be able to advise you. So far as I know from anecdotal evidence on here, the only long term effects seem to be the tooth enamel needing some attention (I think they can give you some treatment to protect it now)some food aversions, and some who suffered badly sometimes feeling the need for counselling over mild PTSD; but I am not medical.

Hiya, I expect this type of thread has been posted so many times but I am struggling so so badly with HG.
This isn't my first pregnancy nor my first case of HG but it by far feels the worst. I'm 10 weeks and have been on fluids twice in the last two weeks. I probably should have been admitted on other occasions but my children are small and it's such a stress being away from them overnight.

In previous pregnancies Cyclizine has helped, it isn't even taking the edge off now. Then to top everything I was prescribed metclopromide instead and had an allergic reaction to it that meant all day yesterday was spent with a lockjaw until A&E could give me the counter drugs. I feel so miserable, it's almost Christmas I have excited kids and I haven't even wrapped their presents, everything is being left to my husband I feel so guilty. Plus after the metclopromide fiasco I'm terrified to try any new medication.

Sorry for the pity party, if anyone can recommend me any tips (although I've probably tried most of the typical ones) I'd be so grateful.

mallowmoon93 · 19/12/2022 18:41

Hi all,

Looks like some really good tips on here!

Having myself a pity party atm. This is my 2nd and I suffered with HG until the minute DS was born in my first pregnancy. I'm currently around 9 weeks and am struggling mentally with it.

I work full time and although they have been understanding, they are getting annoyed at how sick I am and have had to take a couple days off.

I was on Ondansetron last time and that somewhat helped, midwife advised to go straight back to it but GP said they have to start the process again meds wise. I've had 2 lots now which worked to start with but are useless now and I believe the next step is ondansetron but was told you can't have it now until 12 weeks.

Don't really know why I'm posting, just having a moan!! Sorry!

LucindaE · 19/12/2022 20:56

Welcome to mallowmoon93 and PumpkinDart. You seem to be in similar enough situations as Hyperemesis veterans who are in the awful early weeks, and I was wondering, might Xonvea help you both, for mallowmoon as a stopgap until she can start Ondansetron? Or have you tried it before and not found it useful? I know that though it was specially designed for pregnancy, some doctors are reluctant to prescribe it as it isn't as cheap as some of the other anti emetics. I am sure you both know about how much an anti-acid can help. Much sympathy. Sufferers often find that round the ten weeks mark is the worst. PumpkinDart That lockjaw experience sounded awful. Women on here have suffered from twitchiness on it, and have been taken off it due to that, but I had never heard of that before. No wonder you are nervous about trying any new meds. mallowmoon As workplaces are not allowed to descriminate against you over pregnancy related illnesses, while it is unfortunate, they will just have to accept that you need time off. Unfortunately, most sufferers do find that they have to be off work for a while with this.
