I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hope everyone’s coping as best they can. I’ve not had too bad of a week, at the moment it seems to be I mainly feel nauseous about mid morning and an hour or 2 after dinner/at bedtime, but thankfully not actually been sick touch wood. Being strict with myself about taking all my tablets, I worried about having so many before and resisted taking all of them but think that’s probably part of what landed me back in hospital! Hoping to have a nice weekend. With some trepidation we’ve booked a 5 night all inclusive holiday in a couple of weeks time, I desperately wanted a holiday but am of course a bit scared of being unwell when I’m there. Fingers crossed if I keep up the good habits with meds, snacks and trying to drink as much as I can it will be okay!

LucindaE · 26/05/2023 20:45

rubylink That sounds like an encouraging improvement. I'll keep all my fingers crossed foryour holiday.

Hi! I just wanted to check if this thread is still active? I'm 10 weeks into my second pregnancy and HG is really kicking my butt! Would love some support from others in a similar position!

Callernumber7 · 29/05/2023 07:26

D'oh I'm an idiot - just saw that there was a post yesterday! Sorry, I'm very new to Mumsnet and my brain is not what it once was!

Hi! I just wanted to check if this thread is still active? I'm 10 weeks into my second pregnancy and HG is really kicking my butt! Would love some support from others in a similar position!

@Callernumber7 hey lovely I am 12 weeks have my scan next week . I have been here from about 7 weeks and I remember the 10th been really bad . From 7 weeks I lived in my bed for a month it seemed a long time and I only left to the toilet I really couldn’t do anything . If I moved I was ill and constant sickness made me feel faint I really couldn’t function It seems like relentless however for me I started setting small goals for my self which has helped me through more so from my bed to do some sort of basic things . My medications didn’t work but I think by changing my mind set to do small things has helped a lot and I only did this when I felt ready the week just gone I concentrated on going 2 small things each day to get me out the house or a job I needed to do . I was really down and depressed at times and I couldn’t see how I would get back to work .

you will find what works for you long term and makes changes where you can . I still suffer every day with the gag reflex and sickness but it’s managing in your way .

Just remember those bad stages will pass but be kind to your self when they come . This week Iv had no energy to do cleaning and basic chores which I beat my self up but go with that you can do and seek support from close ones who you can talk too .

I hope it doesn’t last too long for you and you will be at the another end soon keep updated xx

OnNaturesCourse · 29/05/2023 12:47

Hi @CallerCallernumber7

Yes, the thread is never ending - I was first here with my 1st back in 2017!

I had a rubbish night last night where even moving was making me gag, and today isn't that much better. I had a super busy day yesterday and I think I've just maybe exhausted myself. I need to rest but it's hard with other young ones in the house. I feel like the stomach is constantly churning. It's a very gnarly feeling.

Hope you are having one of the good days today.

evuscha · 29/05/2023 19:21

Hope everyone is doing well, as much as possible!

Does anyone have experience with weaning off ondansetron? The constipation is killing me and I think actually making me more nauseous. Does dropping a dose help with constipation, or do you have to get it out of the system all together? It works wonders for vomiting but I’m hoping to maybe switch to just cyclizine.

Jaystarlight · 29/05/2023 20:11

Hi all, I am just 4 weeks and my all day nausea started yesterday. I have had HG before and wondered what meds seem to Be the go to ones as my second son is now 6. I’m dreading this!

LucindaE · 29/05/2023 21:32

Cakenumber7 and Jaystarlight Welcome. Yes, the thread is still going. As you are both veterans, you don't need my normal spiel about 'do you find ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit and full sugar flat coke are any use' and 'a good anti acid can make a big difference' and 'have you got kesostixs, as while not the best test of dehydration, hospitals do take their measurements seriously'. What meds helped you before? A relatively new drug which has helped many on here is Xonvea. Ten weeks is thought by many to be particularly bad, being earlyon and the time of one of the greatest hormonal surges. Have you got friends and/or family who can help with LO? Anyway, there is a lot of support on here, as you will have seen already.
OnNaturesCourse Sorry you are paying for overdoing it.
Hairdresser2023 Good advice.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

@LucindaE thank you. Will try all recommendations. Do you know if Xonvea is available on NHS?

NP2705 · 30/05/2023 11:08

@Jaystarlight i was prescribed Xonvea on the NHS although it was by a hospital doctor not my GP. The doctor at the hospital said it’s their favoured option for HG currently.

Jaystarlight · 30/05/2023 12:53

@NP2705 Thank you. That’s good to know

LucindaE · 30/05/2023 19:05

Jaystarlight As NPZ705 says, it is definitely available on the NHS. I have heard on the grapevine that while it was definitely developed for sickness in pregnancy, some doctors prefer prescribing Cyclizine as it's cheaper. But with any luck, yours will be amenable.

Wanted to share my success.

I went ALL DAY yesterday with no sickness, very little nausea and no episodes of gagging/dry heaving.

A combination of keeping distracted, eating small snacks not meals, tonnes of water like 2l plus, omperzole working and three or four very, very early nights.

Keeping fingers crossed for better days ahead.

Felt a bit worse today but just realised all I've eaten is a brioche chocolate roll and it's now 3pm.

Heartburn and Indigestion still seriously kicking my butt though.

Hope everyone is doing OK x

LucindaE · 31/05/2023 18:11

Hi everyone, I’m new on here, recently diagnosed with HG. I’m based in France but I’m a native English speaker and found this thread so I hope it’s okay I’m here. I’m 11+4, on meds since week 7 (have changed three times but this time seems to be working), signed off work and in bed since week 7, and in hospital on weeks 8 and 10 for dehydration. Was pregnant once before in December but sadly it ended in an early loss and didn’t get to a point of having severe nausea so I had no idea this may happen.

Today was a good day where I didn’t vomit once and I was even able to shower and shave, it felt like the biggest accomplishment. I’m in bed all day and have great support from my DH who works from home and my mom who flew in to stay with us from the US. I struggle to see the end of the tunnel, days seem long and never ending. I’m just hoping to stay hydrated enough and that this round of med changes stays working, I’ve had some days of vomiting every 30 mins and those are the ones I ended up in hospital after a day or so.

I hope everyone on here is coping OK today. Reading everyone’s recent posts made me feel much less alone in this journey so thank you 🙏

@frenchie230 hey I can completely sympathise with you I was here from week 7 and the days seem never ending I didn’t see how I would get back on my feet however when I knew nothing was really fully working for me I changed my mind set to small goals to achieve each day I had a week of getting out of bed each day and going to the shop or even just getting down stairs slowly that week I think it was week 11/12 i then realised I could do more and then set a day back to work this week I’m back at work doing 2 clients a day and just concentrating at my day .

I had the same mind set as you and I got really depressed but just nw it will pass and slowly you will see little results and then that will build your confidence slowly xx

OnNaturesCourse · 01/06/2023 09:14

Does anyone else find when they are stressed, or busy, the symptoms are worse?

Ive noticed when my children are acting up, or we are running around late etc that my heaving and general feeling of yuck is a lot worse. Its almost like a trigger.

frenchie230 · 01/06/2023 11:05

@Hairstylist2023 thank you so much for this advice, having one small goal a day seems manageable and hopefully will help, what a depressing few weeks it has been indeed. I’m hopeful for better days ahead and that this cloud will slowly lift!

@OnNaturesCourse I’ve found this to be the case for me too on days when I am more stressed and simply cannot rest as much as needed it definitely becomes worse and I get more sick and feel loads more nauseous those days.

@frenchie230 @OnNaturesCourse yes my house is a state but I just do the priorities and when I feel up to it more when I can but just try not to put lots of pressure on your self .

and soon you will be out the other end xx

LucindaE · 01/06/2023 20:10

frenchie250 Welcome. Sorry you are suffering, and for your previous MC. Of course it's OK using this thread from France. I am glad this third med is working for you. Obviously, they are called different things over there - and in the US - so asking which one it is probably wouldn't elucidate a lot. I am glad they are keeping on top of it and admitting you when necessary. The early stage is very depressing. Many can't stand looking at screens , but the radio or audiobooks can be a distraction. Here's my normal spiel, which I hope helps. Ignore the bits which don't apply. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20, or sometimes later. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, frozen smoothie ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Vimto, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange (M and S has been recommende), 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of strawberry orchocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport. Also, pink lemonade , cloudy lemonade and Sprite. Frozen apple juice has been recommended. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, minature salty Yorkshire Puddings and dry cereeal.
Hairstylest2023 I am glad things have improved for you. Good advice as ever.
OnNaturesCourse Everyone seems to find that overdoing it can cause a relapse. It can be discouraging in the earlier stages.
Apologies to anyone rudely ignored.
