How much weight did you gain during pg and lose after?

I have now put on nearly two stone and have ten weeks to go. Heard some where that two stone is the average to put on (or am I deluded)
How much did you put on? I want to know if its common to be able to lose that much. I do plan on BF. I am only 5' 3" with arthritis so really dont want to be carrying around that much extra for the rest of my life.
Cheer me up please!

hi bearmama - congrats!
i put on nearly 2.5 stones which i know was mainly due to me chomping everything in site. i have lost around 2 stone now - 9 months after giving birth. alot did come off at the start but my eating continued! i joined weight watchers which helped but tbh - i think bf after 6 months really worked.
dont worry about it - it will come off. it might be slow but it does.

Thanks weeonion - I was happy to put on up to two stone but now I'm at that psychological point where not only do I NOT want to put on any more weight, I dont want to get any bigger.
Not that I have a choice tho - well aware of that!

Hi, I put on 2 stone. I bf excl. for 5 months, but within 4 motnhs was back down to my pre-pg clothes, and within about6 months had lost all of my pg weight and more- and ate EVERYTHING in sight, it was great! Bf for 13 months and when I stopped I gradually went back up to normal size, though kept eating everything so no wonder! It is different for everyone though so just go with it. Good luck with the bfing, it really is fab.

I put on 3.5/4 stone with each preg. From 8.5 to 12.5.Lost most of it by the time dd was 18m but then got preg again...baby 8m and I am still massive.Hideous nausea that only abated with bland fatty carbs was the culprit -also was skinny to start with and have noticed that skinnies seem to get fatter.have heard you get fatter carrying girls -is that true I wonder?

BearMama · 25/01/2008 23:43

bramblina - I am looking forward to BF so thanks!
hellymelly - it certainly feels like it. I am carrying a girl and I'm having to buy more maternity clothes!

I put on 3 stone with my DD - and I had lost weight in the first trimester due to being totally off food! This time I'm 19 weeks and I've put on about 9 pounds so far.

I lost a stone straight away after giving birth coz obviously that was baby, placenta, water and all that. 2nd stone went the next week as I was breastfeeding solidly and not really eating that much due to being in shock at having a baby to look after. Weight loss with breastfeeding is a myth if you still eat like you're pregnant! And third stone stayed til she was nearly 2. I only bothered to lose it properly because we were going on holiday. I could have shifted it earlier I suppose.

Rosemary Conley all the way after this one's born. I've done all the diets and found her food & dvd's definitely the most tolerable!

BearMama · 26/01/2008 00:03

Am also wondering if age is a factor - I'm 37 so certainly not "elastic-waisted" as a 20-something might be!

Wondering if I can survive for the rest of the pg on fruit, veg and water. Thinking not...

I put on 2 stone whilst pregnant. Make sure you get food with B12 in BearMama otherwise you'll end up with b12 injections every other day like me. i haven't bothered weighing myself since my dd was born (2 years ago) as all my old pre pregnancy clothes still fit me (not in the same way mind but they do still fit). Are you going to breast feed beacuse I found I could eat like a pig and still lose weight whilst breast feeding. I was on a packet of hobknobs a day after giving birth... God it was great

I know - just have to remember that it took eight months to get to this point so it wont go away overnight!

First preg, about a stone and a half. I lost it all straight away but was very skinny and not healthy.

Second, I put on 2 stone, lost 1 and a half within about 2 weeks of birth, then stayed half a stone heavier till a bug 6 months later when I lost the last half stone! I have since put on a few pounds again...am still Bfing, tis annoying...!

Flllightattendant · 26/01/2008 06:50

...if it's your first baby, it might be easier to lose the weight - ime I was racing around with the pram, so lost loads the first time. This time I have a reluctant four year old to tag along, so it is all veeeery slow. I am not allowed to 'race' anymore
Are you able to exercise despite your arthritis? That is key I think, if you can manage it. Good luck xx

FoghornLeghorn · 26/01/2008 06:55

With DD1 I put on 3 stone and lost over 3 stone after she was born, I actually weighed less than I had in a long time (although it did take 6-9 months). DD2 I put on 4 stone and had just lost the last couple of lb before falling pregnant again this time.

It's definitely do-able - I did it with weight watchers both times.

Congratulations btw

LoveMyGirls · 26/01/2008 08:03

first baby i was 17 was 8 and half stone pre pgy i went up to 12 stone and was 10 and half when i came home.

2nd baby I was 10 and a half stone pre pgy went up to 14 and half stone I was 13.13 when I came home.

dd2 is now 2.4yrs and i'm 12 stone and desperately trying to lose the weight, i'm not stopping until i get to 9 and half stone, i'm also 5.3.

I didn't breastfeed (no milk) or do much excercise because i was too tired so i'm not a good example really! I also scoffed chocolate thoughout both pgy's plus i had girls, i think you put more weight on with girls!

turtle23 · 26/01/2008 11:29

I am still pregnant with my first, so not much help on the losing it after, but just wanted to make you feel better by saying I was 8.5 stone to begin with and now (32 weeks) am 12 stone. And growing daily!!

flack · 26/01/2008 11:42

Don't think OP should worry, your weight gain sounds fine to me, assuming you started the pregnancy a healthy weight.

For me (experience of 4 pregnancies), I'm convinced that 2 stone is the minimum I should put on. Up to 3 would be fine, too. Nearly all of that happens by 30 weeks, and usually it's gone within a few months post-partum.

LaDiDaDi · 26/01/2008 11:48

I went from 7.5 stone to about 9.5 stone by 32 weeks when I had dd but loads of it was fluid as I had pre-eclampsia. I was about 8st by the time I came out of hospital and back to pre-preg weight in about 8weeks.

DontCallMeBaby · 26/01/2008 11:57

Three stone exactly, lost it by the time DD was a month old. Apart from what was baby and placenta, the rest came off thanks to: breastfeeding (tick, vg), non-napping baby who had to be walked for hours to sleep (erm, a bit annoying, but very good exercise), and post-natal depression and Prozac (really not very good at all). A stone has crept back on since, but I like to think that that is the weight I lost through unhappiness, and it's come back cos I'm happier!

SallyInYorkshire · 26/01/2008 12:04

I am 36wks. Started 10 and a half stone, now 12 and a half stone but the weight gain seems to have slowed down a bit in the last few weeks.

Like you I was quite bothered about my weight gain at start of 3rd trimester, but really by this point I have stopped caring - am too knackered for a start, and so anything but the mildest exercise is not really an option! At least I can lose the weight again after the baby - and maybe the varicose veins will get better too - but the stretch marks will never go away completely.

For sanity make sure you weigh yourself in the morning after having a wee, I get LOADS of fluid retention and have learned never to weigh myself after midday!!!!

BearMama · 26/01/2008 12:08

All very reassuring - thanks everyone. Am just at the point where I dont feel able to do much except sit around eating carbs and anything I do takes ages due to backache etc!

Sally I read your post - I think that's happening to me too - have had to take rings off my fingers where they were loose before.
(Ponders attraction of sausage-like fingers)

devonsmummy · 26/01/2008 12:17

I put on 2 and a half stone ( I'd read that was average)

Am still bf my 14mth old and by the time he was 9-10 mths old had lost 3 stone. Thats with cakes, chocolate and biscuits every day!! Things I'd never have in the house pre-pregnancy so I'm hoping I don't pile it on when stop bf
