Did they see anything on your early scan?

I'm about 5+3 days judging by my dates.

My last three pregnancies have failed before this so I'm feeling hopeful atleast.

I have an early scan this week due to my previous losses and also previously had an ectopic.

Just wondering if anyone has any stories of early scans and any reassurance :) x

I had one at 5+3 and saw the sac and which ovary I’d ovulate from - it’s so clever! - and they said it was all looking normal for those dates. I was under the recurrent miscarriage clinic with fortnightly scans him bfp (or the soonest clinic date) hence how early it was.

Wishing you all the best.

hopingthisistheone · 02/10/2022 20:04

@AnneLovesGilbert did you have a successful pregnancy after miscarriage?

Also how often were you given scans? Did you also take aspirin or progesterone?

I had a scan at 6+2 (IVF baby) and could see a little blob with a heartbeat flashing away on screen. Good luck!

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/10/2022 20:08

Fortnightly till 12 weeks. On progesterone, aspirin, fragmin and prednisolone (steroid) and it’s still going okay so far. I had my daughter on the same regime after 5 mcs.

Wow that's a lot! How early did they start you on this stuff please?

I phoned my PAU unit on Thursday and they're having me in this week, I'm not on anything but with 3 previous miscarriages I am obviously worried. Hoping they'll start me on something then but I've also read they won't give you progesterone on nhs unless they've seen it's a viable pregnancy.

Hi OP before six weeks you will just see a yolk sack which doesn’t confirm a viable pregnancy - even if you use a transvaginal probe. I work in ultrasound.

Is this private or NHS? As those couple of days before six weeks can make the difference of not seeing an embryo and seeing one so you need to really be sure you are over six weeks to avoid disappointment

NalaNana · 02/10/2022 20:16

@hopingthisistheone I'm also having an early scan at the end of this week due to history of ectopic. The only scan I've ever had was at 7+4 last time when they discovered it was ectopic so I'm very anxious. I'll be exactly 6 weeks according to my last period.

I've had a little look and it seems that you may see the heart beat but if you don't that's ok. Also you might be a few days earlier or later than you think! I'm trying to not have any expectations but hope that it's at least in the uterus!

Hello, yes this is NHS.

They called me last week and were aware of me only being 5 weeks. They asked me to come in this week to be seen for an early scan but to also discuss requirement for progesterone etc as I was tested for this a few years ago and known to have low levels.

I'm also on clomid so I think that's maybe why they're offering the early scan? I'm sure if they don't see anything this week, they'll ask me back for another. I'm just glad to be having some sort of help.

SlagathaChristie · 02/10/2022 20:26

I had an early scan at about 7 weeks by dates. They could see a heartbeat but thought baby was measuring at 5 weeks, so I'm not sure if they'd have seen much if I'd gone earlier. That pregnancy went fine, thankfully. Everything crossed for you OP x

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 02/10/2022 21:31

I had a scan at 5 weeks bang on and they didn't see much - just that pregnancy was in the right place and a bit of fetal pole I think?

basilmint · 02/10/2022 21:33

Exactly same time as you, about 5 and a half weeks saw nothing but an empty sac. Was very worrying, especially as I'd had some bleeding. Went back 10 days later and saw a heartbeat.

Hrf1503 · 03/10/2022 08:43

I had a scan at 5 weeks and they couldn’t see much but said that was as expected for 5 weeks and it was in the right place. They brought me in two weeks later for rescan and could see yolk sack and tiny baby with heartbeat. I can send you my scans for both so you can see what they looked like if that’s be helpful. Gentle congratulations and wishing you the best for this pregnancy.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Janefx40 · 03/10/2022 09:25

@hopingthisistheone I'm sorry for your losses.

I've had lots of scans at different stages over the years. The development is so rapid in those early weeks that it makes a huge difference how far along you are. Even a day makes a big difference. For example at 5+4 I saw a gestational sac, yolk sac and possible shadow of fetal pole, at 5+6 (different pregnancy) I saw gestational sac and yolk sac, couldn't see fetal pole as hidden but saw heart beat, at 6+1 saw everything including clearer heart beat. Mine are IVF pregnancies so dates are exact but with natural there is also slight variety in exactly when implantation would have happened so that can also change what you see.

Every day makes a difference and of course every pregnancy is different. Just wanted to say that in case you compared your scan to someone else's from a couple of days further on and panicked!

Best of luck. Hope this all works out xxxx

This is approx 5 weeks @hopingthisistheone - the scan was done just to check not ectopic

Did they see anything on your early scan?

Oh wow yes.

I've had a previous ectopic so maybe that's why they want to scan early too.

First photo is 5 weeks (you couldn’t see anything much at all) and second is 7 weeks (thing bottom left is the baby, top right is the yolk sac). They didn’t print 5 week scan for me but let me take a pic of the screen, but they printed at 7 weeks.

I had one at 5+1 which just showed a gestational sac. At 6+1 I could also see the yolk sac and heartbeat. Around the 6 week mark you may or may not see a heartbeat, definitely don’t be disheartened as it’s still normal not to. Hope all goes well!

NigellasMicrowave · 03/10/2022 15:28

Previous ectopic here too and my first scan was 5+4 (two weeks after my positive test). I could see the yolk sac but that was about it. No heartbeat and they didn’t expect to see one. At 12+3 there was a very active foetus and the result is currently napping on me. Good luck - I know how nerve-wracking it is!

HoneyLemon29 · 03/10/2022 16:26

Hi. I had 2 losses late last year with one being a ruptured Ectopic. I had an early scan with my current pregnancy and an empty sac was seen at 4+5 as I was too early (but gave reassurance my likelihood of Ectopic had decreased with seeing it) and then a heartbeat was seen at 6 weeks x
