Biggest shock of my life

I've joined this group specifically because I need to talk about what I've just discovered - 44 years old, unprotected s$x with my husband for well over 20 years (had a miscarriage with him when I was 21) - resigned myself to never having a baby of my own. Every time a friend or colleague got pregnant I became more comfortable with it just being me and him for the rest of our lives....
I thought my period was due, sore boobs etc. Had some very light spotting yesterday which I assumed was the start of my period, then nothing. Realised period was late (usually 28 days like clockwork), funny taste in my mouth, super sensitive sense of smell. Thought it was in my head but went to get a test anyway (part of me kind of 'knew') - got a very strong positive - didn't believe it so did another. Then went back to get a digital one which says 3+ weeks. I daren't be happy yet, I'm just stunned.

Congratulations. As someone with fertility issues & have made my peace with it, I still love hearing about these miracles. It's very uplifting.

Thank you for your kind words. I had made peace with it too, this past year I've had a lot of very weird experiences, this being the biggest.

Such lovely news to read. It seems we chuck out the last remaining eggs as we get older in a sort of last hope - often two at a time - so that's why twins are more common as we get older 😂 I'm 40 and TTC, twins does cross my mind!

Also OP if you have an epu near you that does self referrals, you can walk in yourself for an early scan. The fact that you've had a precious miscarriage is enough to warrant one

I know St George's in Tooting have a walk in 8-12pm

Also placemarking for DH reaction !

Thank you - I went to EPU when I was 21 and it was a pretty horrendous experience to be honest. Might have changed now but I'm going to just stay positive and wait until the 12 week mark. I roughly know how far along I am and I don't want to put myself through the additional stress of going backwards and forwards to the hospital. I went very early on last time, think it was for a dating scan (haven't got any more organised with dates as I've got older it seems!!!). I'm going on holiday next Sunday so lots of time to relax :-)

How lovely! This made my day!

Many congratulations, it is such a happy thing.

I am amazed at how many surprise babies have come along. I was flabbergasted when it happened to a colleague after 20+ years of no babies...and so was she!

Sunnymummy8 · 23/08/2022 18:46

Pascaliisafrenchymathysyperson · 23/08/2022 18:48

About twenty years ago my v good friend who had been with her DH since 16 decided to give up trying. Had never had a positive in more than twenty years.. they decided to adopt and were incredibly lucky to be offered twins..at 8 weeks (but 9 months before they were home with her due to prem birth and legal adoption stuff..

TWO MONTHS after arrival she was pregnant. You guessed it. ? With twins . So at 36 she had no babies and at 38 had 4 under 4yrs old..

She is an incredible mum (and dad) not least because you would never know who was 'bio' and who was 'gifted' .. (it wasn't all plain sailing as SS were worried they wouldn't cope and the adopted kids would take a back seat. but she proved them all wrong. )

They are now in their late 50/60 with 4 spectacular 'children' .

I think that older parents are really fab.. they have 'been there, done that' know exactly what battles to fight and what to let go. Life experience is a huge advantage.. Here's to you Shocked44 xxx
