Chances of miscarriage after first scan

Hi all,

just really wanted to no if the chances change after your first scan?
i had my scan early tho. 6w6d and there was a strong heartbeat but im still scared due to previous miscarrage

Hi Babyellsbells,
I was at a dinner party when I was about 11 weeks (had had an early scan at 7 wks or so), decided to tell the hostess rather than fake drink all evening. Said that I was so scared of mc, still felt so early etc. She said that she'd been told that once a heartbeat had been discovered it was very rare for a mc to happen. She'd been told this by a doctor when she had gone in for an 8 week scan when she was pg. She'd had a lot of trouble conceiving, a few mcs etc so dr was sensitive, but after that scan the dr said 'Go tell your friends!'. That was only 8 weeks but he explained about heartbeat.

BabyEllsBells - I have been given the same advice very recently. Had a private scan at 6+6 having had 2 previous m/c's at 6+6 & 6+2 respectively. Strong heartbeat seen on scan and the consultant said that once the heartbeat was detected the chance of m/c had dropped to less than 5%. It did make me feel much better. I'm 9+2 now and all seemingly going well, though I'm still not confident enough to have told anyone.

At what point did you miscarry last time and was there a heart beat in that instance?

Hi Babyellsbells,

I saw HB at 6w but then found out at 12w scan that that id had a MMC. Beanies HB stopped at 9.5w . I was completly shocked as had also been told that the risk of MC drops once HB had been seen. Im probably just one of the unlucky ones xx

Merryoncemore I had a MMC in october. i was 6w4d. didnt say if a heartbeat had started but just said it had stoped growing. i only had my scan on the 17th and im worried already

missnatalie - that happened ot me too. scan at 7 weeks showed heartbeat but at 12 week scan it had literally died days later. missed miscarraiges are the worst cos as there is no bleeding you presume all is ok.

BabyEllsBelles - We sound as if we're having very similar lifes as my last m/c was also Oct 07. I know what you mean about the worry but I'm trying to just put it out of my mind so that I don't drive myself insane.

Why don't you ask EPAU to book you a reassurance scan for 8 weeks and then you'll only have 1 week to wait before you see that healthy heartbeat once more?

I'm trying to hold out and use my "reassurance" scan at 10 weeks as I'm sure I've read somewhere that after this point the chance of M'C is less than 1%.

Keep talking and try not to worry yourself sick. Up until my first scan I couldn't tell whether it was morning sickness or anxiety that was making me throw up

i had to beg my dr for a reassurance scan as i have only had one MC and its not what they do. You have to have at least 3 MC before they will book you in for scan for every sort of 2 weeks. god i hate the waiting cos i dont no if im coming or going.
if i have trapped wind or if its a pain i should worry about?? i feel so differen this time but still i worry.

Forgot to say my MMC was at easter last yr. DP and i started ttc again straight away and caught again within about 6w. Im now 36+w and so far so good. At the begining i was terrified that something was going to go wrong. I has a tiny bleed at 4w (implantation bleed i think) another at 6w and then a HUGE one at 12w. In the begining i had quite alot of scans at 4w, 5w, 6w & 7w. This was due to me having a previous EP and all the bleeding/pains that i was having. I was also having my HCG levels monitored to make sure that they were doubling but they never did and at one point they were only increasing by about 40%.

Due to all of this i decided to buy one of those doppler things off ebay. It was and still is the best pregnancy buy i have bought so far. I got it for about £60 off a ebay shop called mums n bumps. I received it at exactly 10w pg and after about 5mins of searching i found babys heartbeat and listened to it everyday. Hearing the HB just made me feel a little more positive about the pregnancy although some times it scared me too if i couldnt find it.

Have you thought about buying one? They are a little on the expensive side but fantastic for piece of mind for ladies like ourselves that have suffered MC, MMC & EP in the past. xx

hi BabyEllsBells - i totally understand the first trimester worries. I have just got to 11 weeks and i am only now starting to relax - but i have already had 4 (yes 4!) scans (2 at EPU due to bleeding and 2 private due to mmc paranoia). Could you book in for a private scan?

This is information provided on the miscarriage association website.

Research has shown that if you see a heartbeat at 6 weeks of pregnancy, the chances of the pregnancy continuing are 78%. A heartbeat at 8 weeks increases the chance of a continuing pregnancy to 98% and at 10 weeks to 99.4%. So things could still go wrong, but as long as there is a heartbeat, the risk of miscarriage decreases as the weeks go by.

Hi again Babyells, once youve initially been to the EPAU they will often see you again, mine advised me to call them direct if i had any further concerns or worries following my first reassurance scan. Did they give you a piece of paper with details of scan results etc on - this normally hasthe direct number on it - why dont you try going direct and tell them your going insane with worry etc?xx

Although i have to say i havent contacted them even tho im still paranoid and worried, im trying to hold out until my 12 wk scan figuring there is very little i can do if anything goes wrong (not that it stops me worrying) i just keep trying to BELIEVE that everything is ok. My 12 wk scan is on the 6th Feb - its going to be a long 2 and a half weeks.!!!!

Hi all this thread is being a great support to me, good to hear I'm not going insane or something with how worried I am about miscarrying and also how low the chances are that I am miscarrying now I'm going through my second bout of bleeding (had a scan at 7 weeks showing heartbeat).

This pregnacy was a complete shock to me (I conceived 1 month after meeting bf!!!) but my baby was so precious to both of us from the first moment we knew and I feel very unlucky to have had two bouts of bleeding already (I'm 12wks+5).

No doesnt make a differnce if heartbeat is seen, as i was told before, I have just had my 3rd miscarriage, 2nd missed miscarriage, going in today for d+c, dreading it, But I had scan at 6 weeks 4 days, saw heartbeat and went for another early scan on friday, should have been 10 weeks4 days, and was told baby had died at 8 +5 xxx

well i have booked in for another scan tomorrow at 11.05. they were really helpfull at the hospital. tomorrow i will be 8 weeks so hopefully everything will be ok. god i pray it is. really wanna start my family with my dp soon to be my dh. If everything is ok do you think im silly for going out any buying a few bits? or is that just tempting fait? previous threads says there is a 98% chance pregnancy will continue. so stats look good

sort of the same thing with my MMC. went in @ 8.30 didnt ve op timm 1.30 and was discharged at 6pm. op went really well but still just wanted to be home.
things do get better. xx
