Hello. I currently went to a private pregnancy scan. Bit of a tmi back story my last period was 10th June or very close to that. We was trying to conceive a few times after my pregnancy last one being on the 23rd June. The sonographer said I was about 5+5 the first time I went which would only take me back to the exact date I had intercourse. Then she said we will re scan you 2 weeks after which was today. I've gone and thwre is a growing sac but she cannot see any baby only a shadow at the top of the inside sac. This women is not a media sonographer. I didn't drink alot of water both times and she kept asking after do you need a wee? I said no twice. She's referred me to the early pregnancy unit for a internal. Has anyone ever had this and had a good outcome? Thankyou.

Hi, I don’t have direct experience of this but have had an early scan where only the sac was seen and a follow up that showed a foetal pole and heartbeat two weeks later. At 7+5 sonographers are usually able to see the embryo and a heartbeat but there are influencing factors to consider such as their equipment etc. when is your appointment at EPU? It’s recommended to drink a pint of water before a scan so that they’re able to get a good view from a non internal ultrasound.

shabbadababa · 12/08/2022 14:15

Thankyou so much for your reply. My EPU scan is tommorow at 10.40. I literally only drank about 450ml of water last time. I hate water but I will most definitely be drinking alot tommorow. I'm still so confused as the lady said the sacs measuring at 6+5weeks but no yolk sac and its a growing sac she said there was a shadow at the top she couldn't get a proper look at maybe because I didn't drink enough water at all. But if I'm 6+5 that takes me to the last time I had intercourse. My doctor said it should be going back to my last period which would make me like 8/9 weeks it confuses me so much.

Hi,
good luck for you scan. If you’re not a fan of water, any clear liquid is fine as far as I am aware but not milk (no idea why, I’ve just been told this before!)
so the way that your pregnancy will be worked out is from your last monthly period as no one is ever certain of ovulation and implantation unless you’ve gone through ivf, but that doesn’t mean that your embryo will be 9 weeks old if that makes sense. The way that it’s worked out actually has you pregnant for the first two weeks between period and ovulation even though you’re not actually pregnant at that time. Confusing I know. You need to factor in when you ovulated, when you had sex and then allow a few days for the embryo to travel into your uterus and implant. They usually get a better idea of how far along you truly are at your 12 week scan.

Setting off soon for the EPU scan

So by now you should be almost 8 weeks and a baby with heatbeat should be clearly seen. This happened to me and I eventually did go on to miscarry, although I had already started to bleed a small amount which is why I was sent for the scan which showed just a sac. Did she mention the position in your womb? I had to have regular scans and the sac was moving down the womb.

shabbadababa · 13/08/2022 11:06

Hi. I have been for my internal. I'm really confused but she said I look about 5 weeks estimated she can't really tell but she now sees 2 yolk sacks with the internal. No fetal pole yet she said she wants to re scan in 1 week to 10 days. But how can I be lile 5 weeks if my last time I had intercourse was 23rd-24th of June?

the not knowing what’s going on is really difficult. Try and stay positive until your next scan, they should be able to tell you what’s happening then.

MissMaple82 · 13/08/2022 15:21

It could just be a very slow developing pregnancy, either that or its just not developing as it should and you will eventually go on to miscarry. Unfortunately it's just a waiting game. Rest up and try to stay as relaxed as poss.

shabbadababa · 13/08/2022 16:54

I'm still in shock of news of possible twins! I will rest as much as j can I've just woke from a 3 hour nap with a massive bladder ready to burst lol. I'm so tired and hungry 247

This is pretty much exactly what was seen in my first pregnancy, unfortunately the pregnancy had stopped developing at 5ish weeks. There's always a small chance the ultrasound just doesn't find the baby(ies), but they're outliers and the most likely outcome is a miscarriage. Only time will tell, I'm sorry OP.

PMAmostofthetime · 15/08/2022 06:25

@shabbadababa if it's twins then wild be measuring smaller- congratulations 👶🏼👶🏼

shabbadababa · 15/08/2022 12:32

@PMAmostofthetime I'm hoping they grow as there is no babies at all or fetal pole yet in the sacs

I think that’s true later on in pregnancy, but embryos follow roughly the same rate of growth at the very beginning of pregnancy.

hi everyone, so I went to what I thought would be my 12 week scan on 5th august to find out that was one empty sac and the other sac had the tiniest dot in it so at that point they didn’t know whether it was a bleed or intrauterine twin pregnancy so asked me to go back in 10 days time. Today was the day I went back to be told the empty sac was actually a bleed and the the other sac with the little dot had doubled in size from the last time I went but could not detect a heartbeat so I now have to go back in a weeks time for another scan to see if it has grown enough for the pregnancy to be viable. It seems my dates have been mixed up but my last period was on 13th May I did bleed a little after intercourse twice early July and had brownish discharge! I am just confused with the dates, have I conceived again since before, has anyone gone through anything similar and had a successful pregnancy? I don’t get why it’s grown but not detected a heartbeat but I might not be as far on as I think? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance

Hi, I’d probably make a new thread about this to be honest, as you’ll get more interaction that way. A 12 week old foetus is pretty well developed and looks like a baby (12 week scan is where they date the pregnancy and do the first checks on baby’s anatomy and tests for trisomy’s). The heartbeat is clearly identifiable at 12 weeks. If not even a foetal pole was seen I would say it’s likely the pregnancy has sadly failed or you have perhaps lost a pregnancy and become pregnant again since. Do you have a regular cycle?

Racheyg88 · 16/08/2022 16:32

@puddleduckle hi, yes I have done another thread but also put on here too! Yeah we’ll I’ve had 2 babies and I’ve never had any problems with scans before so I know it’s definitely not a 12 week scan so I think I may have got my dates mixed up I’ve just gone by my last period but i had a loop procedure around a month before I got caught so that could be all linked too! Yeah that’s the only thing I could think of too and I used to be really regular but since my miscarriage in November last year and having the loop procedure I think it’s messed them up a bit

shabbadababa · 17/08/2022 13:46

@Racheyg88 hi I think she means as this is my post for my issue. You should wait to get answers on your own post. I'm asking for help I dont think it's fair someone else posting there own issue on someone else's post when I'm trying to get answers myself.

I hope you get answers soon. My last period was 15th June and had intercourse on the 25th and I had a scan yesterday and am 9 weeks 2 days with a heartbeat. Id think you would see similar if you were pregnant from the same cycle as me. Is it possible you may have lost baby and fallen pregnant again?

doodlywoodlydingdong · 17/08/2022 14:10

When is your next scan op?

Racheyg88 · 17/08/2022 16:22

@shabbadababa i am really sorry I never knew I wasn’t able to comment on here I am new to this so I just saw a thread that was similar to my situation!

shabbadababa · 17/08/2022 21:54

@doodlywoodlydingdong hey my next scan is 26th

Sadly it sounds like a blighted ovum. Basically the sac grows and the body thinks all is well, hormones rise, sickness kicks in all the usual side effects but the baby never ever grows and thus can go on for many weeks and often women who don’t have early scans get to a 12 week scan to still find an empty sac.
at 8 weeks the baby is the size of a grape and should definitely be seen with a heart beat so the fact it’s not at this stage doesn’t sound too good. It happened to my friend she went for her scan she should have been 10 weeks and there was only thr sac measuring 5-6 weeks but she knew that wasn’t possible and she ended up needing medication to start the miscarriage process as her body wouldn’t naturally do it but they left it until she should have been 13-14 weeks and this sac was just still the same size with a little yolk sac but no baby ever grew. It was so sad she had tried a long time to get pregnant.
in very sorry if this is what’s happening to you it’s awful the way the body doesn’t realise and you get all the pregnancy symptoms. When I had my ectopic I knew something was wrong from the day I got a positive test as my line was faint and I was almost 5 weeks so I knew then this wasn’t normal, so I had prepared myself thus pregnancy isn’t going to work out. But blighted ovum’s arnt very nice as they do trick you into thinking all is ok as you do feel genuinely pregnant with them for a very long time.

shabbadababa · 18/08/2022 10:12

@PinkBump2022 I thought this myself after having a read of somethings. I have come to terms with it and I'm fine with it I have 3 children already so I'm greatful. It's not as hard nowing I haven't seen or heard any heartbeat then lost it. I just want the 26th too hurry up so I can find out and get on with my life and my children.
