@SamanthaVimes We have a small routine that I start around 8.45. Nappy change, sleep bag, cuddle, feed and he's asleep by about 9.15. Been doing that a while now, he turned 12 weeks yesterday. Just followed his lead basically, he would take a nap around 8-9pm when he was first born and I'd then have to wake him to take him to bed when i got tired which was around 11pm then he'd take ages to get to sleep (sometimes until after 1am) which wasn't making sense so I decided to make the last nap his bedtime instead and it worked out

ChinChilly · 06/10/2022 07:29

We’ve got a rough bedtime routine, bath around 8ish then her last bottle is somewhere between 8:30/9 then she normally falls asleep on me and I take her up when I go up about 10:30 and she tends to sleep through until 6:30/7:30.

In the day I just follow her lead, I am thinking about putting her upstairs for day time naps with the monitor though. She will not go down in her Moses basket downstairs so I end up holding her but she tends to only have about 40 mins at a time but I put her in her next to me yesterday morning and I went back to bed with her and she slept for 2 hours so I think there’s too much to look at downstairs

kiwi17 · 06/10/2022 07:39

@KizboBaggins I actually don't know sorry πŸ˜‚ he just started doing it would settle for a feed after bath then just stayed asleep! Dd never used to though she'd have the witching hour til about midnight and just scream and refuse to sleep πŸ˜† he is 12 weeks now and we've been doing the bath sleeping bag routine for a long while so wonder if he just knows? Not sure we were that consistent last time round..

Mattieandmummy · 06/10/2022 10:14

We're similar, she goes in her pjs and sleeping bag at 6.30pm with my eldest and then will either nap or shout whilst I do bedtime and desperately try to boob her to being quiet so my eldest can go to sleep. Her last feed is fairly consistently around 8pm and then I hold her until we go to bed at 8.30/9pm and she goes on her next to me already deeply asleep.

Our problem is our eldest waking her up at 5.30am when she gets up - no matter how many times I say let's use our quiet voices it's "Hello Mummy" at full blast. Left to her own devices the baby will happily sleep until 7.30/8.30am but that rarely happens.

Mattieandmummy · 06/10/2022 10:22

@KizboBaggins my first was a screamer, 5pm to about midnight every day. It was extremely hard but she did grow out of it by 5 months. She was also the worse sleeper ever so the universe owes me one with number 2 πŸ˜‚

chocsaucestrawb · 06/10/2022 13:59

Can anyone recommend a soft baby towel?

The ones I have aren't very soft and they are the hooded towels which aren't big enough anymore

Definitely going to try a more of a bedtime routine in the next few weeks - like the idea of putting her in her sleep bag earlier - normally do it when I transfer her to her cot when we go up but all for trying to get her used to a nice bedtime routine - I've kind of just gone on her lead but now she's 11 weeks think I'll start soon

X

CaptainCarp · 06/10/2022 15:54

@SamanthaVimes @KizboBaggins we are 14 weeks & kind of getting a bit of a bedtime routine.
We get changed into "pajamas" around 7:30 then we have a feed & settle to sky before heading to bed.
Sometimes this results in a 3/4hr stretch sometimes we get 1hr! I might try putting her in the sleeping bag downstairs.

@chocsaucestrawb we have a lovely 1 from done by deer but it is hooded & not that big. Baby is 14.5lbs & it wraps around but her legs hang out. She seems happy enough for now though!

chocsaucestrawb · 06/10/2022 16:17

@CaptainCarp sounds lovely - I definitely need one that wraps all around her. She seems to like that. She's only just stopped crying after when I get her changed - it's like she knows the routine now. I've made the bath warmer and that's helped.

I definitely think the sleeping bag is a winner - with my first I remember her yawning and almost knowing that it was nap time ( a lot older more like 6-9 month stage when I was using the upstairs cot for daytime naps also) so I definitely am going to try that tonight. Also introduce a little bedtime massage with some lotion from tonight. I haven't managed to get to any baby massage classes yet but I remember with my first and she absolutely loved a massage after her bath so I'm definitely going to incorporate that.
All I remember is trying a routine too early and jt made it stressful so trying to let this one lead but def in the next few weeks I think x

CaptainCarp · 07/10/2022 13:07

I tried sleep bag on downstairs last night. We had a 3hr stretch of sleep a nappy change & feed & then another 3hrs.

I think it would be a longer stretch but she's been pooing more since her 2nd rotavirus vaccine whereas she had been going most of the night with wet but not dirty nappy.

ShellUK09 · 07/10/2022 21:58

@CaptainCarp sounds like the sleeping bag is working for you. We aren't getting 10+ hours sleep here either, more like 6 hours at night but I'm very happy with that as it is progress. She does go into sleepy mode from about 7pm and she sleeps in her Moses basket in the living room while we are downstairs. We can't seem to drop the late night feed at midnight, when we do it is a disaster. My partner generally stays up for the midnight feed and then once she is asleep the next feed is 6:30-7:00am. We have had a few bad nights this week though so nothing seems to stay the same for long! I'm sure she is having another growth spurt, but I've also bought some teething gel in just in case... I've been learning some baby massage techniques in the weekly group I'm going to so might try that each night around teatime and see if it makes a difference.

Mattieandmummy · 08/10/2022 08:32

@ShellUK09 @CaptainCarp I hate to say it but there's no way I would be expecting 10 hours of solid sleep at this age. We still get 2 to 4 wakes overnight which is totally normal. I know 18 month olds who are still waking up overnight. I've noticed most people will tell you their babies bedtime and what time they wake up in the morning but they don't mention the number of wakes which suggests they slept all night but they rarely are.

ShellUK09 · 08/10/2022 08:56

@Mattieandmummy ah yes that is so true, people do like to make out that their babies are sleeping all night. I think you are right and many probably overstretch the truth without mentioning any wake up times in between!

kiwi17 · 08/10/2022 10:12

@Mattieandmummy 100%!!! I remember this first time round and it used to really get to me but some people's idea of sleeping through is midnight to 5am for example and that's not my idea of sleeping through πŸ˜† I did try out a dream feed last night at 10pm and he made it to 4am though so that's maybe worth trying to extend the sleep if anyone wants to try? It never worked with dd she wouldn't wake enough to feed but he properly latched on last night and fed so that was good. (Saying that tonight could be completely different - people like to brag about the 1 full night sleep but don't tell you the rest of the week was awful!)

Fizzybubblegumbottles · 08/10/2022 10:29

My LB has a bath around 8.30pm bottle around 9pm normally in his next to me between 9.30pm & 10pm. He has his bottle about 6.15am on weekdays but he does wake in the night about 1-2 times but only for his dummy and sometimes he makes a few sounds I check on him and he has gone back to sleep himself. He never cries during the night think he just wants to know I’m there half the time πŸ˜‚ he normally wakes around 2am and then around 4am but I don’t give him a feed sometimes a little cuddle, hand on his chest or patting his back and he drifts back off. Last night he went in his bed about 10pm and wanted his dummy at 4.15am then had a bottle at 8.30am no two nights are the same. We are up earlier during the week because of school runs but weekends no rush to be up really lol. He is 3 months now so I know things will probably change but for now I’m not complaining πŸ˜‚

ChinChilly · 08/10/2022 11:25

@Mattieandmummy my LO pretty much does sleep through, she occasionally moans for her dummy once but she’s still asleep and doesn’t do it every night, she only ever woke up once between about 10-6 for a feed as a tiny newborn so I think we are just lucky at this stage and fully expect it to change any time soon πŸ₯΄ I however do not sleep through I probably check on her 3/4 times a night.

annie1994 · 08/10/2022 16:36

My little boy is 15 weeks and between 7-7 I normally feed twice (around 9pm and 3am). But then during the day he feeds quite often like every 2-3 hours.

But even though he sleeps pretty long stretches at night, he’s so bloody noisy!! Such a noisy sleeper, drives me mad πŸ˜‚

chocsaucestrawb · 09/10/2022 09:33

@annie1994 mines the same - so noisy and I can't sleep through it! The broken sleeps a killer

Last night she did 3pm feed, was asleep by her 7pm feed so just we let her sleep and dream fed her at 9pm when we went to bed and she went through to 530 for a feed but she's so noisy - was hoping it was something she would grow out of by now! X

CaptainCarp · 09/10/2022 13:31

@Mattieandmummy definitely not expecting 10hrs but I did enjoy the nights when she did a 5-6hr stretch & then a 2nd stint of 2-3hrs after a feed!

She did do a couple of 3hr stretches again last night so wasn't too bad.
She seems like she's getting trapped wind... Not sure if its a side effect of rotavirus vax as she's pooing a lot still.

Lianna93 · 12/10/2022 13:24

I literally popped on to ask about bedtime routines & I see that's currently the topic πŸ˜‚

My little one goes down at midnight or if I'm lucky, slightly before and then she's typically out until about 7ish when we wake her to take her omeprazole and her dad always does the first nappy of the day. She'll then have a feed & go back to sleep and she'll sleep until 10/11 - just depends really but every now and again, she changes the game & will wake during the night for a feed or two πŸ™ƒπŸ˜‚

We've started managing naps in her next to me now for during the day too. I'm trying to build it up to the point that I can leave the room to potter about but right now, she'll wake up if I leave πŸ˜©πŸ˜‚ But it's definitely progress from when she would constantly sleep on me!

OP posts:
ChinChilly · 12/10/2022 15:52

@Lianna93 I’m trying to get my LO to have naps in the next to me, managed it twice so far but for some reason in the day she just wants to nap on me. I put her down and she just wakes up and gives me the cheekiest grin. The Moses basket downstairs is still a no go πŸ™„ the snuggles are lovely but I really would like her to nap independently.

kiwi17 · 12/10/2022 16:11

@ChinChilly we are the same I can get 40 minute naps in the cot in the daytime but if I want more I just stick him in the carrier - guaranteed 2 hour nap plus I can get on with things! That's my compromise πŸ˜‚

ChinChilly · 12/10/2022 18:15

@kiwi17 we got 40 mins in the cot today which is a record here πŸ˜‚ she will sleep in the carrier aswell and will happily sit in her bouncer for abit while I get stuff done so I think your right..comprise is key with these babies πŸ˜‚

kiwi17 · 12/10/2022 22:02

@ChinChilly definitely! I used to get so worked up when my daughter wouldn't nap in the day time for more than 35 minutes so this time I'm trying to relax a bit more and go with the flow!

3 months tomorrow... where has the time gone?!

Lianna93 · 13/10/2022 06:20

@kiwi17 I love the idea of using the carrier around the house but even though I've got it secure & right, I still get the fear she'll somehow fall out of it if I'm bending down to do laundry πŸ™„πŸ˜‚

@ChinChilly I think I've given my little one some day/night confusion by having her in the crib. Swear she's given me the worst night, has refused multiple times to go down in the crib but will settle in my arms so I have to make sure Shes definitely out before I transfer her over. She's had me up every hour which is so unlike her!
Although- this could just be part of her 12 week growth spurt or because she's teething because she kept chomping down on my nipples for every feed last night 😭

Baby's are haaaaard πŸ˜πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

@kiwi17 my boy is 3 months today too and I'm like woah slow down sir. Wheres my tiny newborn gone?

I also have a contact napper in the daytime. I just go with it. If I need to get anything done I just do it during his wake windows, he's happy to sit in his bouncer while I get on. Then when it's nap time I make sure I'm set up with drinks, snacks, phone and remote in arms reach. Funny how in the night though he's perfectly fine and capable sleeping in his next to me. Maybe if I make it dark during the day he'll sleep in it πŸ€”
