And if you can’t manage a full course St John’s ambulance have a good YouTube video on children choking. I used to watch it every few weeks when DD was little and just starting out with did, it’s only 5ish mins but covers the basics of what you need to do in an emergency.

ShellUK09 · 29/09/2022 11:03

Thanks @kiwi17 I will have a look to see what is available. Excellent @SamanthaVimes I've saved those St John's ambulance videos on choking and CPR to my favourites and will do as you did and watch them every few weeks. At least if you have some idea of what to do in an emergency it is better than panicking and doing nothing

Mattieandmummy · 29/09/2022 17:39

@SamanthaVimes thanks those look super helpful. I could definitely do with a refresher pre-weaning.

@ShellUK09 yep pre-weaning is soooooo much easier and then they get to the stage where they tell you they don't want x for dinner πŸ˜‚!

Lianna93 · 29/09/2022 20:05

How's everyone getting on with tummy time? My LO will scream the place down if I even dare 😩😩😩 She'll do a minute or two if the tv is on & has my nursing pillow underneath for support.

SamanthaVimes · 29/09/2022 20:57

@Lianna93 we don’t do it but DS spends a lot of time in the sling which apparently does similar muscles. His head control is pretty solid now unless he’s really tired.

If I put him in the floor with his sister around he’d get trampled!

CaptainCarp · 29/09/2022 21:22

@Lianna93 we have some days where she just screams as soon as i put her on her tummy. She has got fairly strong neck muscles & can hold her head up in tummy time when she can be bothered πŸ˜‚.
Theres a baby that is only 1 week younger at our local meet up that can't/won't lift her head up at all! They are all so different.
DD has always loved lifting/turning her head whilst on our chest though & now she seems determined to work on her abs to be able to sit up (& people watch)

ShellUK09 · 29/09/2022 21:37

@Lianna93 I bought an official tummy time cushion type toy where she is meant to lie across it and play with the the toys, she usually just lies face down on that! I also do tummy time where she lies on my chest/shoulder and she raises her head up to look out of the front window, she is curious about what is for going on outside! We just do it a for few minutes at a time. It seems unbelievable that all of our babies will be sitting up unaided soon!

missv556 · 29/09/2022 22:00

@Lianna93 tummy time is still a bit hit or miss, depends on his mood I think. I put him on his playmat a few days ago on his tummy and he did a really solid job lifting his head for a few seconds at a time. Other times he will just faceplant and frantically claw at the mat screaming. I've found we've had more success the past few days with him lying tummy to tummy with me. He picked his head up and held it for so long and it wasnt floppy, he lifted it with good control. I've been a bit slack with it until now but I'm making a real effort to do it every day. I watched a YouTube video that said they get better at it quite quickly if you stick with it daily so it's given me the oomph to keep it up

@ShellUK09 that's quite exciting to imagine having a baby that can sit up, love all these new milestones

KizboBaggins · 30/09/2022 10:45

@Lianna93 like @missv556 my boy is hit and miss too. Yesterday I put him up on the boppy pillow and he did amazing. Today I put him on my chest and he was determined to suffocate himself. I think for us it's about finding the right time - he's only having cat naps atm so I think he's spending a lot of his time too tired to do anything really active.

I'm probably not trying as hard as I could be with it but I just can't get out of my head that my parents never did tummy time with me or my brother and we both seem quite capable of holding our heads up lol so I can't work out why it's suddenly so important

Has anyones little one had a cold yet? I think I remember a few ppl mentioning it. Any tips? He's been coughing this morning but seems ok in himself so far. Worried about him getting blocked up and struggling to breath, but he's ok for now

CaptainCarp · 30/09/2022 11:53

@Mattieandmummy I'm excited for baby to sit up but also think slow down & stop growing! Lol

@KizboBaggins baby currently has a cold here! She's a bit snuffly & occasionally has to rest during feeds. I'm just making sure to offer again rather than assume she's finished.
Also she wants to sleep on me so I've not done a lot!
I did "make" her sleep in the next to me last night as i was worried she might get a temp & overheat in the bed. Sleep has been great with lots of waking for feeds.

ChinChilly · 30/09/2022 12:37

Tummy time massively depends on mood here aswell sometimes she just sucks her sleeve other times she gives it a real good go. OH supported her chest yesterday then slowly removed his hand and she kept her head up for ages, she loads better at holding her head up when she’s being carried around tbh. I pretty much agree with @KizboBaggins I’m probably not doing as much as I should but sometimes it’s hard to find the right time between feeds and naps!

I saw something on Facebook about SIDS and it panicked me a little I know it’s really rare in the UK, but does anybody still have a fan on in their bedrooms? I know it reduces the risk but since the weathers been cold I haven’t been using it. This little monkey always ends up against the side of the next to me, I always put her on her back in the centre feet to foot but for some reason she always wiggles over the side and her face facing the side of the next to me and sometimes squashed up against it, she sleeps through most nights now but I still have to get up and move her back into the middle! I dunno how the prevent her from doing it πŸ™„

SamanthaVimes · 30/09/2022 14:24

@KizboBaggins we’ve had a few colds already (the joy of having an older sibling in nursery!)

things I rate are:
snuffle babe vapour rub
saline nose spray
calpol plug ins (I think they need to be 3 months for this but they’re great overnight)
if you’re bf you can squirt milk up their nose
calpol if you can tell it’s making them feel grotty
hanging out in a steamy bathroom (eg after you or DH has had a shower)

SamanthaVimes · 30/09/2022 14:27

I took DS to the osteopath today as I’ve suspected he had a bit of tightness in his neck. Poor little thing screamed his head off whilst we were there but had a good nap in the sling and has been happy since he woke up.

I accidentally did a load of shopping on the way home though, found a new bookshop so got lots for DD (I’m obsessed with buying her books!)

Lianna93 · 30/09/2022 19:06

Didn't mean to comment & run - I completely spaced & forgot I even asked a question πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
My LO has been having an awful few days with her reflux but gave her gaviscon on top of her usual omeprazole dose & it was like an instant change!

So refreshing to hear everyone's tummy time stories - I kept worrying my lo was lacking behind but she's very much similar to everyone else in the sense of can lift her head when on the tummy but hates it but if you lift her up, she can hold her head up for ages. One of the nurses at my breastfeeding group took her for a bit today whilst I had a cuppa & said she had really strong neck control so I felt proper relieved at that πŸ˜‚

@KizboBaggins
So sorry to hear your wee one has a cold - mine got her first one really early on & the was literally nothing we could do other than suction the mucus out her nose due to her age. However, we did have her in the bathroom during my shower time to get the steam as I have scalding hot showers πŸ™ˆπŸ˜‚ Lots of skin to skin can also help with the process!
It's awful when they're poorly - hopefully it's a speedy recovery 🀞🏻

@ChinChilly Our babies are getting to an age where they're finding positions that work for them - my LO keeps rolling onto her side for sleep πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚ If your little one sleeps in a sleeping bag, they don't need to be feet at the bottom of the crib because there's no material for them to kick up into their faces. Depending on the next to me as well, it may have a mesh wall that's breathable.

OP posts:
ChinChilly · 30/09/2022 23:10

@Lianna93 good to hear your little one is doing better! This one definitely likes to nuzzle her face into things to sleep, she does it in my arm and if there a muslin near she’ll nuzzle into that! Funnily enough on all my scans she either had her hands over her face or her face pushed into my placenta. The next to me does have mesh sides but those are the bits that fold down so she’s just nuzzling into the side parts that aren’t mesh near the bottom. These babies love to cause us worry lol

kiwi17 · 01/10/2022 14:09

@ChinChilly I have a nuzzler too 😫 I think the 3/4 month sleep regression has hit here as we are now only getting 25/30 minute naps in pram/car/Moses basket in the day but if I put him in the carrier I can extend it to 2 hours but he nuzzles into me I have to keep turning his head sideways because I'm worried he'll suffocate himself! Good to have the fallback of the carrier but my back is dead!

KizboBaggins · 01/10/2022 14:20

@kiwi17 my boy does that too when he's in the carrier - smooshes his face right against my chest so I spend most of our dog walks stopping to check he's still breathing πŸ™„

We've had 30/40 min naps all week too. Except today of course when DH is finally off work and I go out alone (bliss) to do the shopping and the little monster sleeps for an hour and a half (and still going!)

Thanks to everyone's tips for his cold by the way. I've bought some snuffle babe vapour and have been putting him in the bathroom while I shower. He's very snotty today but sleeping it off I think

KizboBaggins · 01/10/2022 14:40

Oh i have another question! My boy has quite a dry flaky scalp (it's not cradle cap, he had that and it's gone now). What can I do about it? I've been using Johnson's baby shampoo but not regularly, once a week maybe. Is it better to use less or more shampoo? Or try something else?

ChinChilly · 01/10/2022 16:16

@kiwi17 i don’t mind the nuzzling during the day but nuzzling into the side of the next to me at night worries me, I moved her back into the centre of the next to me about 10 times last night πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ Mine does that in the carrier too πŸ˜‚

@KizboBaggins my LG has a little bit of cradle cap, the HV said to just wash it, brush her hair and moisturise her scalp, guess it would be the same id it was just abit dry.

We’re just having cap naps here during the day aswell, she had about 30 mins in her pram today which is unheard of, still outright refuses the Moses basket though

SamanthaVimes · 05/10/2022 20:34

Has anyone started doing a proper bedtime for baby yet? At the moment I’m just boobing him into submission whilst I watch TV and then taking him up with me whenever I fancy going to bed (usually 9:30/10ish unless I’m watching something particularly gripping πŸ˜…)

He does have a little shout at me before he falls asleep though so I’m wondering if maybe he needs a bit less stimulation

KizboBaggins · 05/10/2022 20:41

@SamanthaVimes we haven't tried it yet. We still have a period of nap refusal and major fussiness from about 6pm to 10pm every night... I've wondered if he's over stimulated too but he's only just 11 weeks and it feels too early to start a bed time.

Feels like this evening fussiness will never end tbh. He's now refusing the dummy too which is fun.

How old is your little one? I'm thinking of trying bedtime when he turns 3 months

SamanthaVimes · 05/10/2022 20:54

@KizboBaggins we’re 11 weeks too. Starting at 3 months sounds like a good idea. He’s a pretty good sleeper at the moment but I know that can all change at 4 months. If we have a month of decent routine then maybe it’ll help him sort himself out afterwards

that also gives me a couple of weeks to think about what the routine should be! He’s sleeping in his pram bassinet at the moment but he’s so long he won’t fit in it much longer. Don’t know if I can be bothered to rebuild the cot bed or just skip straight to cosleeping again. DH will moan if we build the cot but don’t use it!

kiwi17 · 05/10/2022 21:41

We do bath pjs and into sleeping bag around 6.30pm when we put the 4 year old to bed- have been doing that since about a couple of weeks but just from ease really. He normally then boobs then sleeps in the Moses basket in the lounge with us from 7/8ish until we go up to bed at 9.30ish. Not sure what we'll do soon though as he's outgrowing the Moses basket and will go into the travel cot which isn't as portable as the basket!

KizboBaggins · 05/10/2022 21:45

@kiwi17 and what kind of sorcery are you using to get him to go to sleep at 7pm?! πŸ˜‚

chocsaucestrawb · 06/10/2022 06:52

We too are 11 weeks and no set routine
Thinking about doing one in the next couple of weeks

At the moment we do bath and pjs at some point around 5-6 depending on how she's doing - napping/awake and that's when we have our dinner - we have another daughter aged 11 whos just started secondary so more for her to make sure she has a good routine

Then shes asleep by 7-8ish but downstairs with us on the sofa in her sleep pod and then we transfer her to her next to me cot when we go to bed 9-10ish

We always dream fed at 9-10 when we go up and usually she has a bottle around 2/3am but night before last she had one at 430am and this morning 6am so she's had her best night last night

I'm thinking of making more of a routine but slowly over the next few weeks so where I'll actually put her in our room by 7-8ish then set up the monitor
It's what I did with my first and it worked well but at the moment she's still so little x
