Pregnant on IUD???

OK so I have the copper coil I have had it in since I gave birth to my son 3 and a half years ago and have regular periods. I noticed I was a week late so I have taken a test and it is very much pos. What do I do? I'm googling and seeing only 1% likely to get pregnant on the IUD and that there's high risk of ectopic?? Do I call doctor? 111? Anyone had this? Panicking. I have just checked my strings again and they are very much still there.

As the copper coil is hormone free, i think there no chance that the test isn't anything other than a positive due to pregnancy. (Congratulations?)

Yes it's rare, and yes there is a higher chance of ectopic with copper coils - but not always. 111 won't do anything, I would contact your GP tomorrow first thing & ask for an urgent scan / referral. If you can't get through to GP tomorrow then ask for the community MW number and contact them.

It's very important that you discuss this with your GP tomorrow. You will need a scan and removal of the iucd.

@Babynum2 did you manage to get to speak to a GP or MW today to get IUD out and a scan?

I’ve just had a positive test with the copper IUD. Didn’t realise my period was 10 days late, so took a test just to be put my mind at rest and couldn’t believe it.. scan at EPAU tomorrow 😬 can very much feel the strings still, hope they can remove it. Did you have yours removed, OP?

Babynum2 · 06/07/2022 16:30

@DottyLittleRainbow ahhh same boat then! No I'm having it removed in 2 weeks it's still in my cervix so all should be OK. I didn't get to EPU until late or she would have done it then but she said she needed another person present. Keep me updated.

Oh good luck! I’ve got a scan today to see what’s what, really grateful they could see me so quickly. Hoping they can remove the coil. Still in total shock to be honest!!

Oh no, I was planning to get a coil, this has slightly put me off!!

No contraception is 100 effective, don’t people know that? Don’t let it put you off Bertie Botts!

I’ve had 2 copper coils and never had any issues before now. Failure rate is 0.8% so still the most reliable form of contraceptive, I’d still have another one.

It is possible - as you’ve found out (Congratulations!! 💐).

@BertieBotts I’ve had the copper coil for 23 years continuously without any problem. No form of contraceptive is 100% reliable, it’s important to be aware of that, but as pp said, it’s still the most reliable form of contraception there is, and by quite a long way.

So they could see the coil on my scan today, it’s lower in the uterus than expected but not in the cervix.

Signs of pregnancy changes in the uterus, but no visible pregnancy in the uterus or tubes either. So they have taken HCG bloods which was normal for 4-5 weeks and they repeating that in two days to see if there is any sign of miscarriage or ectopic, or whether it’s just a very early pregnancy.

They said they won’t remove the coil until they can locate the pregnancy on scan or exclude an ectopic pregnancy.

Who the hell knows what’s going on in there!

My copper IUD baby is 38 yes old. IUD removed without incident.

@BertieBotts I wouldn't let it put you off I've had 2 pregnancies on the pill aswell the coil is much more effective. The doctor told me that because you have heavier periods on the copper iud it can sometimes make it move slightly but still very effective compared to other contraception.
@DottyLittleRainbow I'm glad they are bringing you back in I was just over 5weeks and they could just about see something so could well be just to early.

Oh wow! Congratulations! I conceived DD1 whilst on the pill so definitely no contraception is 100%. Then we tried for over a year to conceive DD2. Conception is a strange thing!

Hope it all goes well for you.

Had bloods repeated today and hcg is rising but not doubling. I’ve had some spotting but no pain. Possibly an early miscarriage due to the coil but they can’t rule out ectopic until my hcg drops so I have to have bloods repeated on Monday. Such a weird situation!

A friend of mine became pregnant with the coil and they didn't remove it. Child born with the coil and all was fine!
