Has anyone been told the gender at 12 week scan?

Had my 12 week scan today.. measuring at 12+2 the sonographer did see the nub and guessed boy from it. Has this happened to anyone else and it been wrong? Was really hoping for a girl after 2 boys but have kind of lost all hope now 😂🙈 I don’t have any pics so can’t even post it here 😢

No but I was told girl at 20w with ds2 and he is definitely a boy (2 years old)!

You can have a NIPT blood test now for around £400 and find out for certain?

NohoHank · 02/06/2022 18:37

So I work in obstetric ultrasound and it's actually very concerning that your sonographer would have guessed on nub theory. It goes against every code of conduct we have to follow and I would advise you not to believe this yet.
It's not usual to be able to tell on ultrasound until roughly about 15 weeks. Maybe book in for a private scan at 15/16 weeks, if you want to know before 20 weeks. It's still not always garunteed to see due to baby's position at your 20 week scan.

I wouldn't listen to be honest - wait til much later

oakleaffy · 02/06/2022 18:40

Yes!
I said I didn’t want to know sex and the person doing the scan said
“There’s his spine”
I said “His?”
She blustered and replied “ We call all babies “ He”!

DC is a boy.

They do though ... it's approx 50% likely to be a boy .... or a girl!

We do call all babies he. It's more personal that it.

I was told a boy at my 12 week scan by a sonographer who got super snotty when I queried if he could be 100% confident at that stage... She was definitely a girl 🤷‍♀️

SheWoreYellow · 02/06/2022 18:54

I was told girl at 16 weeks. He was not a girl.

Snowflakes1122 · 02/06/2022 18:54

I thought I saw boy bits at my 12 week scan this time around. I jokingly mentioned it to my DH, and the sonographer was quick to say he wouldn’t be able to tell me. I knew that though. I think they would be in trouble to guess at this stage.

I had a private scan with my son at 13+4 and she was able to determine sex, so it is possible - at least at 13 weeks in me experience.

Topseyt123 · 02/06/2022 19:03

I'm surprised that anyone said that at the 12 week scan. Surely they can't see enough to be accurate at that stage?

Wait until the 20 week scan. Even then it isn't guaranteed that they can tell you accurately as much depends on how the baby is lying at the time.

With DD2 and DD3 I knew from the 20 week scan that they would be girls. When I had DD1 though a few years previously the hospital I was booked at had a policy of not telling at all, which I found very irritating.

maythe4thbewithme · 02/06/2022 19:08

It's easier to spot a boy at 12 weeks - girls are harder so more girls turn out to be boys than boys turn out to be girls

CoalCraft · 02/06/2022 20:11

Got a pretty good "potty shot" at DC2's "12 week scan" and while the sonographer didn't verbally confirm it, she did make a "yup" face when I said "looks like a girl". There were just no boy bits. Subsequent scans have since confirmed girl beyond reasonable doubt. That dating scan was actually at 13+5, though, so a little further on.

I think that's true, at my 12 week scan the sonographer kept saying 'he' but I didn't question it. DC is definitely a girl. I'd rather they did that than referred to the baby as 'it'.

Moosh18 · 02/06/2022 20:34

My friend was told girl at 12 week scan, and has just found out he's a boy at 20 weeks!

maythe4thbewithme · 02/06/2022 22:03

Up until 12+6 it's pretty hard to confirm a girl with 100% certainty that's why a lot of gender scans done on the high street at less than this gestation turn out to be wrong.
A nub which looks girly at 12 weeks by 13 weeks can much more boy like. That's why reputable places don't do gender scans less than 16-20 weeks

twinmum2017 · 02/06/2022 22:04

We were told boys at our 12 week scan.

At 16 weeks (twin pregnancy) they said they 'thought' girls and they were really
cross with the 12 week sonographer.

It was girls!

PinkBump2022 · 02/06/2022 23:22

Yes with my last son we got told at the 12 week scan he was a boy based on the nub. I knew he was looking at the nub anyways and we double checked at 16 weeks and he was a boy. This time at 12 weeks we knew form the nub it was a girl. I’m 22 weeks now and she’s definitely a girl 4 scans have confirmed. The nub theory is extremely accurate if done correctly. Do you have a photo of the boy nub?

Marty13 · 02/06/2022 23:29

I was told girl at the 12wk scan. Twice. I have two boys ! They gave you a guess nothing more, I wouldn't really take it into account. Either the 16wk scan or a nipt can tell you the gender with reasonable accuracy.

BeQuietAndDrive · 02/06/2022 23:30

Yep! They said girl. They were wrong!

Unknowmama · 05/11/2022 10:33

im in the same boat I went for a scan at 12w 5d and the sonographer said she was 100% a girl without a doubt in her mind but how accurate can you really be I’m still not sure what to think 🤔

kegofcoffee · 05/11/2022 10:44

I was told girl at my 12 week scan (full medical scan but done privately). The sonographer told me it was around 90-95% accuracy at 12 weeks.

It was correct. But I also know people who's been told gender at 16 week gender scans or 20 week NHS scans and they've been incorrect.

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 05/11/2022 11:08

I had a read of the research literature through sheer curiosity.

  • under perfect conditions with highly trained sonographers, they can determine fetal sex at 13 weeks plus
  • they cannot reliable determine fetal sex at 12 weeks or earlier, should not be considered at all before 12+6
  • in actual real life conditions, fetal sex estimates made between 13 to 16 weeks were 83% accurate so not completely foolproof
  • boys are easier to correctly identify than girls

So the sonographer should not have said anything and may not be accurate

Babyenroute · 05/11/2022 14:37

Our sonographer made it quite obvious she thought (thought being the key word as I know it's hugely inaccurate at that gestation) that we were having a boy at our scan on 12+5. After we told her we had actually hoped to keep the sex a surprise, she backtracked a bit. We now have an adorable little boy!

Betsyboo87 · 05/11/2022 16:19

With our second recently they asked if we wanted to look at our 12 week scan and it was quite clearly a boy. I was 12+3. Can’t confirm it yet as we haven’t had the 20 week scan yet. I should add that we’re not in the UK.
