Abnormality on 20 week scan

Hi all,

Just wanted to see if anyone has been in the same boat as currently losing my mind waiting for an appointment from fetal medicine!

Went for our 20 week scan today and although little boy is growing well and all 4 chambers of his heart can be seen, they have said that the pulmonary artery on the 3VV view looks enlarged so are referring me for a specialist scan. I also only have one artery in the umbilical cord instead of two.

Has anyone else experienced this and everything turned out okay?

Thank you!

Hi! I can't speak about the heart but my son only had one artery in his umbilical cord. I spoke to my midwife about it and she arranged three extra growth scans for me later on in pregnancy and he was born with no issues and has none now either. He turns 4 next week ☺️

Sorry I have no advice or experience - But posting to bump for you.

Wishing you and your baby all the best. ❤️

Hi

how are you?

I have just come across your post as I’ve had a similar scan today, they could see al 4 chambers of heart but could not get ‘normal’ views of the 3VV & 3VT. I’m just waiting on call to book in with specialist. Feeling really worried

Cantchoosename · 30/06/2022 22:41

Hi @Rachel19852022 how are you doing? Do you know when your next scan will be? Hope you don't have to wait too long for it

Rachel19852022 · 01/07/2022 18:38

Booked in for Monday thanks. Feeling very up and down, but trying to stay positive

Cantchoosename · 03/07/2022 22:44

@Rachel19852022 Wishing you well for tomorrow. I'll be thinking of you.

JadeD20 · 25/07/2022 18:50

Hi, I've just come across your post, we had our 20 week scan today and the sonographer advised that the pulmonary trunk is bulging. Have you been seen by a consultant or paediatric cardiologist? I am very anxious right now as we lost our little girl 12 months ago due to cardiac abnormalities found at the 20 week scan, In so worried that it's going to happen again 😢 not sure my own heart can take it. Xx

Rachel19852022 · 25/07/2022 20:45

Hi JadeD20, I’m so sorry you are going through this on top of the loss of your little girl.

We saw an amazing cardiologist after 3 days (including a weekend) and even though the news was not what we wanted I actually think those 3 days and the not knowing were worse than coming to terms with the diagnosis for us. Our diagnosis is serious, but operable and there is a good plan in place.

Do you know which cardiologist unit you have been referred to and can you call them directly? I called the next day after our initial scan and even though I didn’t mean to had a big cry on the phone to them, they were lovely and managed to get me booked in.

Sending you big hugs and hope you get the scan asap. There are so many different CHD and amazing things that they can do, try not to think the worst xxx

Hi Rachel. I know it’s been a while since the post. But I had the exact same today. 4 chambers fine but abnormal 3vv and 3vt view. What was the outcome of you being referred to fetal medicine. I’m terrified too!

Hi @Laurenb1311 im sorry, it’s really scary having news that there might be a problem but not fully knowing what that could be.

Our baby was diagnosed with Transposition on the Great Arteries (TGA), it is a serious heart defect that required NICU care at birth until corrective surgery was carried out, in our case at 10 days old. It was super scary, but our 1 year old is now thriving and we have been told to treat him
as a ‘normal’ child, he has no limitations and other than a scar on his chest you would not know anything had ever been wrong.

Im not 100% sure if that specific wording on the scan relates solely to TGA, but that was our outcome.

If you’ve not found it yet I would look at the Tiny Tickers website, lots of info on all different heart defects and if fetal do find something, they are an amazing charity that support parents to be.

Good luck, try not to Google too much and I’m happy to chat/message anytime xxx

Hi @Rachel19852022 Thanks so much for the reply. We had our scan yesterday and our baby has also been diagnosed with Transportation of the great arteries. Feel absolutely awful today as it’s hit me but happy to hear all the positive stories after the corrective surgery. How long were you in the NICU all together following his birth? Thanks again xxx

Aimee19 · 16/09/2024 20:12

Hi @Rachel19852022 @Laurenb1311

sorry I’ve only just came across this feed.

I’ve just had the same news at my 20’week scan, I’m booked in for Wednesday 18th September for my scan.
i was informed from the printed paper work I had that the issues are with the 3VV and 3VT.
currently the heart beat has always been between 149-155bpm, and she is flourish growth wise.
I'm just extremely anxious and don’t like being stuck in the unknown.

Hi @Aimee19
sorry to hear this. It really it an awful time being in the unknown. In mine and Gemma’s case that view was baby having TGA but it could just be how they were lying in your tummy on the day of the scan. I’m glad to here your scan is tomorrow please let us know the outcome and we can support you if the outcome is the same xx

Laurenb1311 · 17/09/2024 05:24

@Aimee19 Which hospital or area are you based x

Aimee19 · 17/09/2024 07:45

Hi @Laurenb1311

Thank you for your quick response.

I’m based in the UK, I’m under Goodhope hospital (Birmingham) , however my scan tomorrow will be at heartlands hospital (Birmingham) with the fetal medicine team.
My worries are she asked for a second sonogram conductor to come in who confirmed the same? However she didn’t actually look herself? Just looked at the images taken? I just don’t want to kid myself? If that makes any sense. She did keep saying the little one was putting their hand in the way or kept moving? We were in the room for 25/30 minutes?
I'm just so nervous, I’d rather know what I’m going to tackle than be left in the unknown, yesterday killed me.
i feel so guilty that my anxiety has wished this on her, :( !

Did your little one have to have the corrective surgery? if so how old? Were they in the NICU for long after? Sorry for the questions, please tell me to mind my own business.

hope your little one is doing well.
Aimee

Laurenb1311 · 17/09/2024 07:56

I’m also Birmingham based. I had my scan at Birmingham women’s and had my baby there in the end for him to be transferred to Birmingham children’s. Yes I also had a second person come into the scan to check. I’ve realised now with TGA it’s very easy to see once the images are taken. On a normal heart you can see 3 valves (3vvt view) but as TGA goes round the back they can only see 2 on the scan.

My baby did have the corrective surgery yes at 6 days old. We were in the children’s hospital for 3 weeks overall. He’s thriving now though! The surgery has 98% success rate. But I wouldn’t worry too much until you see fetal medicine tomorrow xxx

Aimee19 · 17/09/2024 11:21

@Laurenb1311 wow so close.

well I will tackle whatever it is when it comes down to it. I just felt so lost yesterday Google was telling me nothing? The hospital told me nothing? I came across this feed and felt a sense of relief, and reassurance that it could be okay?
Did you have a natural birth, or was a c section required? I’m nervous about not being able to go with her if they transfer her somewhere else.
Thank you for your support x

Goxley02 · 08/02/2026 09:45

Hi,

I know it has been a while but I have just had similar at my 20 week scan and wondering what your outcome was?

Aimee19 · 08/02/2026 14:05

My daughter had TGA - transposition of the greater arteries. Unfortunately she passed away at 2 1/2 days old, but this was due to negligence of the nhs.

Goxley02 · 08/02/2026 17:08

@Aimee19 oh my gosh im so
sorry🥺

Aimee19 · 08/02/2026 19:30

Thank you, are you concerned from one of your scans ,?

Goxley02 · 09/02/2026 07:05

Yes Iv had pretty much the same thing happen to me as what you guys said. I have my Fetal Medicine scan today x

Kendrickspenguin · 09/02/2026 07:23

Goodluck today Goxley. I hope it all goes as well as possible for you. My eldest son was diagnosed the day after he was born.

Rachel19852022 · 09/02/2026 11:11

Thinking of you today @Goxley02. Our baby was diagnosed following the 20 week scan with TGA but has had an excellent surgical outcome and as hard as those first few months were you wouldn’t know it now.
