Can I ask for your opinion/ advice pleaseโ€ฆ

So Iโ€™m 36+3 and will be having an elective c section between 37 and 39 weeks depending on babies position at scan next week. I really want to do colostrum harvesting but I know that can induce labourโ€ฆ iโ€™m petrified of going into natural labour before the c section due to traumatic first birth and especially if this baby is still transverse or breech. I have the obstetrician on Monday so I will ask him but just wondering what would you ladies do?

My partnerโ€™s input was โ€˜f**k doing anything that may bring labour onโ€™ ๐Ÿ˜‚

AppleTree16 · 04/06/2022 16:42

Could you wait and see until after your scan? They wonโ€™t do the c section same day so youโ€™ll at least have a day or two to try?

Hi everyone, I haven't checked this thread for a few weeks but finally caught up now. I don't know where the time has gone...work has been busy as usual and it's always the same before going off on holiday or in this case maternity leave (as others have said), everything seems to get busier or you're expected to just carry on as normal up to your mat leave starting. I only have 2 shifts left so 7th is my last working day and I can't wait. I love that phrase "mentally checked out", and I did that weeks ago aswell! I'm so ready to be off...not sure I'm as ready for a baby to arrive in 5 weeks though, or sooner! I don't know if I'm feeling more excited or nervous, probably a bit of both at this stage, but I'm looking forward to meeting her at last ๐Ÿ˜Š

I'll just comment on some previous posts below, sorry as some of them are from a few weeks ago!

@NamelessBaby1 Thanks for the welcome! And I hadn't heard of a snot sucker until you mentioned it, it makes me feel slightly queasy but I suppose I'll have to get used to dealing with these things when baby is here!

@ShellUK09 I'm glad your baby has moved/engaged. Hopefully they stay there now! I have my next midwife appointment tomorrow morning so will find out if my baby is still in breech or not. I can't really tell...sometimes I seem to get the sensation that she's a bit lower down and pushing on my bladder more, and other times I still feel movement at both sides of my tummy so I don't know. I'll see what the midwife says tomorrow and take it from there.

@KizboBaggins My belly button seems stretched/flat and I have a line above it but nothing below. About the TENS machine, I decided to buy one as I had read positive things about them giving a bit of relief from the pain at least in the earlier part of labour. I know they're not guaranteed to work for everyone though, but I thought there was nothing to lose by getting one just so I have it handy when the time comes. If it doesn't work or I don't end up needing it then I'm sure I can sell it on again. I'm also considering using the birth pool although not totally sure if I will actually give birth in it, I suppose I'll only know at the time how I feel about that. The midwife told me that water births can be more gentle for the baby but we'll discuss that more tomorrow. In the end birth plans can change so I'll try to go in with an open mind but try to be prepared for all scenarios. I'm trying to decide whether to take any bikini bottoms for the pool if I go in for a bit before the baby comes, or will I even care by then and just go without? ๐Ÿ˜„

@ChinChilly Like you and many others too, I'm now struggling to get comfy in bed, mainly with lying on my sides and my hips aching because of the extra weight. I can fall asleep ok but wake up at least 2-3 times to turn onto my other side and usually get up for the toilet aswell. By 5am (sometimes earlier) I struggle to get back to sleep because I just can't get comfortable. I suppose it's probably the body's way of preparing us for what's to come.

@strawberrysummer19 I was so glad to see that your baby is alright and hope you're doing well. I've had periods of time on a few days where I feel she is quieter than others, and I'm never quite sure whether to phone triage, but then she has started moving again and I suppose it can just vary a little bit day to day. Yesterday though it felt like she was doing somersaults at my right hand side, she seemed a bit more active than normal, but it might be if she's facing different ways I can feel her more some days than others. Maybe she's trying to move downwards, we'll see!

I've also been trying to pack my hospital bag during the last week or two, I just find it hard trying to decide how many of certain things to take. I got those disposable padded pants aswell, but they're for incontinence really so I'm not sure if they're absorbent enough for what's going to come out after the baby is born, or are you supposed to put a maternity pad inside them? I suppose they could just be disposed of after that, but I also bought some big pants/full briefs because in the end they'll probably be a bit more comfortable...good to have both options! I was wondering too how many nighties/pyjamas to take, one of my antenatal classes suggested 2 nighties for birth and 2 for after but that seems like loads. Right now I have one nightie which is like a shirt style so has buttons down the front which would be good for afterwards/breastfeeding...one normal style nightie and comfy loose pyjama bottoms and a tshirt type pyjama top. Surely that would be enough? Oh and I've also been wondering about tops for breastfeeding aswell, so thanks for the strappy vest top tip, whoever suggested that (sorry I didn't note down your user name!).

I also bought a birth ball a few weeks ago, well I think it's officially a gym ball but loads of reviews were left by women who said they had used it during pregnancy and it was totally fine. My physio recommended getting one so that I can use it to try to help ease the hip aches a bit, and also that it can help to encourage baby to engage, so I've been trying to use it a little bit every day and it does feel quite comfortable.

@Danani Yes I definitely get different movements now compared to a few months ago, they kind of feel more squirmy now than just kicks, and I often see body parts sticking out or can feel the hard bits of a head or bum under my skin! I can never really identify what the body part is though!

@kiwi17 I know what you mean about finding nice maternity clothes. I haven't bought loads but I got some (in sales or discounted where I could!) from New Look, H&M and Next...a couple of things from George at Asda too. I mainly ordered online though which is not ideal, but there are hardly any shops here with actual maternity ranges you can go and look at. I've been wearing maternity jeans from H&M which have been really comfortable, but now the band at the waist keeps falling down because my bump is getting too big. It's slightly annoying but not long to go I suppose! I need to try to find some nursing bras aswell. I want to try breastfeeding and not too sure how it will go, but I can only try...nursing bras look a bit faffy but with practice I'll probably get used to it. I'm just not sure what my actual bra size is anymore, I've always been quite small so I don't think they've grown that much, but they have a bit and probably will more so if and when milk increases. I'll need to try to measure and maybe go up a size or two...I've never really found it easy getting bras that fit perfectly!

@Lianna93 I'm also in Scotland and my baby box was delivered this morning ๐Ÿ™‚It does make it all feel more real doesn't it! ๐Ÿ˜ณI haven't opened it yet because my husband is in Canada until Thursday (he was born there and had to go and deal with some family things, so I'm hoping nothing happens before he's back!) and I've asked if he wants me to wait until he's back to open it together, or whether I can have a peek now! Maybe I should just do it, I can be far too patient sometimes!

I think you also mentioned the health visitor in one of your posts - I got a letter over a month ago from the health visiting service at my GP surgery and they said they'd contact me to arrange an initial home visit between weeks 32-34. I'm now 35 weeks and haven't heard anything else from them so far.

@HotToddyColdSauvignon I was actually going to ask about perineal massage in this post but you beat me to it ๐Ÿ˜ŠIt has been mentioned in a few antenatal classes and I've come across it online, so am willing to give it a go as I do get a but nervous at the thought of tearing, although apparently it doesn't necessarily stop a tear from happening...just might make it less potentially severe if it does? I suppose these things are not guaranteed to work but worth giving it a try just incase! It's not the most comfortable thing in the world though. I started trying it last week at 34 weeks, and I've done it 3 times as I think I read that was recommended somewhere, but I'm not sure. I know that there are instructions on how to do it, but I've no idea really if I'm doing it properly. I'm using almond oil which seems ok, and I can reach but it just all feels quite awkward. Some of the guidance recommends using 2 thumbs but I don't seem to be able to contort myself to the position to be able to do that! ๐Ÿ˜†I'm trying to just stretch the skin in that area the best I can, and right now it does feel a bit of a burny/stinging sensation but not unbearably...which I've read is normal...so I'm hoping if that subsides a bit then it might mean that the muscle is becoming more stretched...otherwise I don't really know! I've read about a device called the Perimom which is supposed to make it a bit easier but it costs over ยฃ50 so I'm giving that a miss, especially when I don't know if it's definitely going to work. I've bought the perineal soothing spray (Spritz for Bits) for after the birth, from My Expert Midwife website (which has great reviews so I'd rather have it just incase). I got one on ebay a lot cheaper than from the website ๐Ÿ™‚

@Mattieandmummy I was also told in one of my antenatal classes that if you eat 6 dates a day from 36 weeks it softens the cervix and "significantly reduces the risk of induction", according to the notes I wrote down! I'm sure they said there had been studies into it and there is some evidence that it has this effect, but who knows really. But I'll give it a try...I've bought a big bag of them ready for next week!

A few of you mentioned/asked about what we've bought so far for the baby. I've got most of the bigger things I need I think, like bedside crib, pram/car seat...also bouncer, high chair (although she won't need it for quite a while), play gym mat thing, baby bath, changing bag, some clothes for various ages (it's hard to resist when there are so many cute things!), and the essentials like nappies, wipes, some gentle bath soap/shampoo although I know that it's recommended to just use water for the first while...I've bought a lot of things second hand where I can, as long as it's still in good condition, as some things can be so expensive and she won't be using them for that long. I don't have a changing table although did want one, but then I thought that I could maybe just use the desk in the spare room which will eventually become the baby's room. Usually I've been working from home in the spare room, and the desk is kind of built in to the wall but I might need to take it out in future when she gets a bit older. Right now this room is just full of piles of things I've been buying, as well as some of our own things too. I just feel like I don't have enough space for everything and wish this house had an extra room, but I'll need to try to have a bit of a clear our or at least rearrange some things. I still have at least 7 months before she moves to her own room, hopefully!

I wasn't sure about buying a baby monitor yet because if she's going to be mainly in the same room as me most of the time, and sleeping in my room, would I really need one for the first few months? And also a baby carrier...I like the idea of carrying her like that and having my hands free, but as with baby monitors there seem to be so many different types. I'm not sure about the cloth type ones as I have a fear of it coming undone somehow and the baby falling out! Probably just be being paranoid and overthinking it! ๐Ÿ˜„A friend mentioned one that she had which clips at each side and also has a bit at the back which you can pull up on the baby's back and clip that too at the sides. I saw this one on Amazon which at first glance looked ideal, but then one of the reviews mentioned that it didn't hold their baby's hips in a good position so despite all the good reviews, I'm not sure now! www.amazon.co.uk/Infantino-Advanced-Convertible-Carrier-Light/dp/B01FF518KK/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=baby%2Bcarrier&qid=1654368241&sr=8-5&th=1 I suppose I'll just need to keep researching!

I was going to ask, probably another personal question, haha. But how have everyone's toilet habits been? I know that at this stage digestion is supposed to be more sluggish so that the baby can get more nutrients from what we eat, and last weekend I had been quite constipated for 2-3 days. But then at the start of the week it seemed to resolve itself and for maybe 3 or 4 days I was going twice a day (one day 3 times! Sorry, too much information!). I've read that before labour the body tends to have a bowel clear out and I know that I'm not quite at that stage yet (at least I hope not!), but I wonder if it's going to be more like this the closer I get to the big day. Or it might just be hormone related too. I've been feeling more hungry these past few weeks aswell...I know that in the third trimester we only need an extra 200 calories or something but some days I just feel starving and definitely eat more than that! Which I know is not good, but if I feel hungry then I suppose my body is telling me to eat, but I try not to be too unhealthy although crisps and cheese can be a weakness sometimes....

Final question or thought was back to the hospital bag....I've read that it's recommended to take snacks and drinks for labour because we need to keep our energy up when we're going through it, and we don't know what time of day it will be so there might be no food available in the hospital for hours...I'm thinking that eating during labour is the last thing I'll feel like doing, but I've got a few snacks together just incase. I just wondered if anyone else had any snack ideas for labour. So far I've got some oat bars, Soreen slices, fruit/seed oatcakes, nuts/dried fruit (like a trail mix style), mini Snickers bars, some fruit pastilles and wine gums, etc. Crisps will probably be in there too and possibly fruit but it's probably more messy to eat that. I've got some Lucozade sport (non-carbonated) which seem to be recommended during labour. Water too of course and a little carton of coconut water but I'm not sure if I even like it! That list seems like far too much though, haha. A friend said she took sandwiches to the hospital when she was in labour, but how can you be that prepared? Unless I get some before the hospital if I have time, but then what if there isn't a fridge? I'd need to be trackled with a cool bag too, although having cool drinks would be nice. I keep reading tips about batch cooking so you can have lots of nice meals in the freezer ready to go, when you come home from the hospital, but I'm the kind of person who fills my freezer to the brim with various things (I like to get yellow sticker bargains sometimes which I then just freeze, which can take up a bit of space!), and I really need to use it more quickly. So I don't really have space to fill up my freezer with batch cooked meals although it would be nice! Maybe I should just purge some things to make space....or my husband might need to learn to cook over the next 5 weeks and spend some time in the kitchen for a change when we come home! ๐Ÿ™„

I'm sorry for rambling on with the longest post ever, but I just wanted to get all caught up! I've always enjoyed reading the posts here, everyone seems so friendly and I've learned a lot during what has been and is a brand new experience for me (and for many of us), so thank you ladies xx

Danani · 04/06/2022 21:42

Hey @Gaily82 ! I love a good long juicy post, so thoroughly enjoyed reading all your responses and updates!

Very jealous of your mat leave on the horizon! Hope you have a couple of very quick last shifts/days and then you can fully disconnect!

Re your bikini bottoms comment- I think you probably wonโ€™t care but Iโ€™ve seen/read about people getting in a while before itโ€™s pushing time, so might be a good idea to have them on for that portion!

I also stocked up on those full-on adult nappy panties which I read (and hope) are brilliant for postpartum! Apparently no need for pad as they are VERY absorbent. I guess weโ€™ll find out soon enough! Iโ€™ve also been packing (or trying to) my hospital bagS and I have 2 nighties - I think for labor Iโ€™ll either be in bra/bikini or hospital gown, and Iโ€™ll probably use my two nighties for after. I agree - 4 seems like a bit of an overkill!
can I ask how on Earth are you fitting everything in?! I was intending to only use a small cabin bag for me and changing bag for baby, but the pads and disposable pants literally took the entire half of my suitcase! I donโ€™t want to go in with 17 bags and totes, but literally how am I supposed to pack it all in? I havenโ€™t even started on snacks either! ๐Ÿ™ˆ

Mattieandmummy · 04/06/2022 21:47

@Gaily82 my dear husband bless him made a full on set of sandwiches and a fruit cake to take slices of to the hospital when I was having my first. I think I barely made it through half a sandwich in the entire 12 hours of labour and once the baby is out they throw slices of toast at you. I'd say you'll be fine with snacks, as you say eating anything was the last thing on my mind.

Re: dates, they need to be medjool dates apparently. Normal ones don't work, no idea why.

In my experience, a baby monitor was really, really handy in those first few weeks for situations when the baby had fallen asleep upstairs and you had actually managed to put them down (without them waking up) and then managed to sneak out of the room (without waking them up) and you fancied lunch or a shower or even just a cup of tea on the sofa without a small person. But it's so easy to get a baby monitor though, you'll easily be able to get one once you need one.

CaptainCarp · 04/06/2022 21:49

@Gaily82 I've had a bit of constipation as well. Had days where I haven't gone & I feel really bloated & people say how I've "popped out". Then the next day I manage to go & I swear my bump shrinks & I lose a couple of lbs ๐Ÿ˜‚

Also the days when I feel hungry all the time! Only so much cheese or chicken I can snack on though so usually have to distract myself a bit.
I did find no caffeine no sugar pepsi max the other week & that helps "fill me up" for a bit.

Struggling to think of snacks I can take to hospital for labour as I've got GD & I've read that I still have to test at hospital so can't have to many carbs ๐Ÿค” definitely something I need to ask the midwife next week or maybe the clinic.

I've got a home visit to go through safe sleeping and some other things in 2 weeks.

MollyRover · 05/06/2022 08:27

@Gaily82 I found All Bran a few weeks ago so having that with strawberries, half a banana and some almond milk 3 or 4 mornings a week and it has literally changed my digestive system. Much more comfortable than I have been in months, even though I've always eaten plenty of fruit and veg.

HotToddyColdSauvignon · 05/06/2022 08:29

@Gaily82 welcome back!

re: nursing bras - I went to M&S and got lucky that the fitting lady had previously been a bra fitter at mothercare, so she spent almost an hour with me talking me through all the different options and why XYZ was better than something else.

she did helpfully point out that I should make a note of the ID numbers of the bras I wanted, but not order till a week or so before due date โ€œyou can always get your partner to go do click and collect if you need to if baby comes earlierโ€, because of the 30 days return period.

We found one bra I really liked, and she said to buy 2 different sizes, but she suggested to wait until my milk comes in to try them on again, as apparently theyโ€™ll get even bigger once that happens (not sure how thatโ€™s possible, theyโ€™re already a shelf!)

would definitely recommend going to get properly fitted though, Iโ€™ve apparently gone up 4 bra sizes which I was horrified about!

HotToddyColdSauvignon · 05/06/2022 08:33

@Danani

Iโ€™ve got a cabin bag for me, then a hold-all with all the babyโ€™s stuff, then DH is bringing his own bag for life with snacks and stuff for him ๐Ÿ˜‚

realised I hadnโ€™t packed any nightwear for me (ooops)

Iโ€™ve got these bra-lett bikini type crop tops I was planning on wearing in Labour and then just figured Iโ€™d wear more of those with tracksuit bums after?

SamanthaVimes · 05/06/2022 08:56

@HotToddyColdSauvignon boobs definitely get bigger when your milk comes in, I had Pamela Anderson boobs when mine came in with DD. I was not prepared for it at all! ๐Ÿ˜…

Mattieandmummy · 05/06/2022 10:07

@annie1994 the amount of colustrum you will actually be harvesting is really tiny. Post birth on my first hand expressing with a midwife's help I managed 1ml from each boob and the midwife thought that was a good amount. At five days old I think my daughter was being given 30ml at each tube feed (NICU baby) so still tiny amounts and she was a big baby.

The colustrum will still be there post birth, I guess the decision is whether it's worth bringing on labour when the baby could be in a less than ideal position for a really tiny amount of colustrum. My two pence worth would be that it wasn't worth it having seen the effects of a less than ideal birth first hand.

Coco9910 · 05/06/2022 16:49

Hospital bag talk..again! (Sorry!) Just been trying to sort some bits for my bag and Iโ€™m unsure on how many maternity pads I need to take and how many breast pads? Iโ€™ve packed 10 maternity pads and 6 pairs of breast pads with the thought of I need more my partner can bring them in with him but just read my hypnobirthing notes which says โ€œ2 packs of maternity padsโ€. I need to get some of the tena pants - are they just the standard incontinance pants? Iโ€™ve bought some period underwear too that I thought I could wear with a pad and see how that is.

Also, how many nappies should I take? A friend has told us we donโ€™t need to take any as the hospital will supply them but I donโ€™t really want to turn up with none and look like bad parents ๐Ÿ˜…

Gaily82 · 05/06/2022 17:29

Hi ladies, thank you for your replies!

@Danani Aww thanks! I'm glad I didn't bore you with my epic post, haha! ๐Ÿ˜„Thank you for taking the time to read it! Yes Tuesday is my last day at work, well I'm finishing up a little early (I'm due on 8th July) but I had to use my remaining 3 weeks of annual leave before maternity leave starts on 1st July. I had asked if I could carry any of my leave over to next year but wasn't allowed. I think I'll be quite glad of a few weeks off before the birth to just try to relax, whilst at the same time getting the house tidied and in some kind or order!

Yeah I think I might take bikini bottoms just incase, and at least then I'll have the option of wearing them or not (as you say, I might not care by then though!).

I saw my midwife this morning and she also said the absorbent nappy pants are very good/absorbent, so hopefully they'll be ok for blood flow after the birth but if not I'll have a back up with my big pants and maternity pads! I have not missed periods at all whilst being pregnant...not looking forward to their grand return! ๐Ÿ˜‘That's a good idea to wear a bikini or hospital gown whilst in labour, I forgot about the hospital gown option! It will probably be boiling in the hospital in July anyway (or at any time of year!) and I'd rather mess up a hospital gown during labour than one of my own nighties! So I might just take one nightie and comfy pj bottoms and vest top or something for afterwards.

As for fitting everything in, I haven't quite finished packing yet, I feel like I've stalled because I don't know where to fit in all the nappy pants/maternity pads/nappies because they're so bulky! I think I'm going to take an overnight holdall type of bag for my things, and another one for the baby's things (but changing bag is a good idea, most of the baby things will probably fit in there actually), and I'll probably put the bulky things I mentioned above in a plastic shopping bag or something. I was also going to take an old towel for having a shower, well I read a tip to take a dark towel for a shower afterwards incase of any mess, although hopefully it won't be too bad! So I might put that in another plastic bag...as for snacks I was thinking either another plastic bag/bag for life or cool bag with snacks/drinks! I just know I'm going to feel so trackled with everything! I feel like I might as well take the large suitcase I normally go on holiday with at this rate! ๐Ÿ˜‚But hopefully we'll manage...I definitely won't be able to fit everything into just one bag, and I'm sure the midwives are used to mums coming in with several bits of luggage! Fingers crossed!

@Mattieandmummy How sweet of your husband to do that when you had your first child! But yes I can imagine that eating is probably the last thing you want to do in labour. I was speaking to the midwife about it this morning though and she said that it's important to try because she has seen some mums having to end up having emergency sections for no other reason than they didn't eat at all, and were so lacking in energy later on that they needed the section...she said you can start to get ketones in the urine which can interfere with things, etc. I'm sure a lot of mums manage with just eating a little though, well she said even just a square of chocolate every so often can give an energy boost. She recommended getting glucose tablets too as they can be good aswell, so I got some berry flavoured ones at Asda earlier just to have in my bag incase. I still don't think I'll be able to eat much but I'll take snacks along anyway so that I have the option. She said that Lucozade sport (non-fizzy) is great for replacing elecrolytes but not for hydration so to alternate it with water. Ah I've heard about the toast after the baby is born, I already know it's going to be the best thing I've ever tasted! ๐Ÿ˜„ I'm curious whether I'll be in the mood for coffee/tea...I've had an aversion to coffee ever since the first trimester and I haven't drank any since last November! So I wonder if I'll suddenly like it again after the birth.

I spoke to the midwife about the dates aswell, and she said as far as she knows any dates would be fine, but just incase medjool dates are better I'll make sure I get some! And thank you for the baby monitor advice, that's very true, there will probably be instances where I can put her down and nip away for a shower, etc, and even taking the monitor into the bathroom would be handy. I'll do some research as there are so many different ones, but as you say I can easily get one quickly (Amazon, as others have said!) as and when needed.

@CaptainCarp I've been experiencing much the same thing! It seems to come and go with constipation...some weeks it has been hard to go and I feel so bloated and 'full', and then when I'm able to go it does seem to make a difference to the bump! I try to eat enough fruit and veg but sometimes the only thing that will help is prune juice! It hasn't been too bad this last week but sometimes it can be really annoying. I also feel that some days I'm more hungry than others, hopefully it will pass soon enough! That's a good idea about the Pepsi Max distraction and finding other ways to fill yourself up. Drinking is a good way to do that and I know I'm supposed to be drinking far more water than I am, but sometimes I just find it so tasteless (obviously because it is!) and struggle to drink enough of it, even if I put lime/lemon in it or something. At the moment my favourite drink is San Pellegrino lemon, it's so refreshing, but shouldn't drink too much of that either. Anyway we're almost there and hopefully these quirks in our systems will settle down again!

Yes it must be tricky to think of snacks you can take to hospital when you have GD, but I'm sure there will be some options and still plenty of time to get some guidance from your midwife/clinic ๐Ÿ™‚

@MollyRover Ah I forgot about All Bran, I actually have that in the house too so I should get into the habit of having it a few times a week as it all helps. Good idea, thanks!

@HotToddyColdSauvignon Thank you for the nursing bra advice, much appreciated! I agree that it probably would be best to be properly measured and fitted because the size I am now is not going to be the size I am when the milk really starts coming. That was fortunate that you had such a helpful fitting lady at M&S, it sounds like there are so many options so it would be good to get some guidance before I go and probably buy the wrong things! I don't suppose there's any point in buying nursing bras now and then they might be too small in a few months from now. I might just wear my normal bras (I had to get non underwired ones months ago and they're so much more comfortable. Like you mentioned they're kind of like a cross between bra and crop top type of thing so maybe similar to what you have) and I can always just pull one of the straps down as needed until I see what size I'm going to be, even for the first few weeks. Yes it's amazing how breast size can change during pregnancy...I've always been very small and I remember my mum saying to me that the only thing that gave her bigger boobs was pregnancy, so history is repeating itself! ๐Ÿ˜„

@Coco9910 I've been unsure about this too...so far I've laid out one pack of 10 maternity pads, but only because I've also got a pack of 10 of those nappy pants which I was going to try to use aswell (just standard incontinence pants as far as I can tell?)...and if I need more my husband could bring them. But now I'm not sure whether to put a second pack of maternity pads in the bag aswell, just incase! I think if we go with a bit of both then hopefully we'll have enough for the time we're in hospital...if it turns into a longer stay then I'll keep a few spare packs of pads at home and my husband can get them if need be. For nappies, around 24 was mentioned during my antenatal class, and the ones I have happen to be a 24 pack so was just going to take those and see how it goes. Yes I wonder if the hospital will supply some too though. I'd go for one pack, but I might be wrong!...

Just to mention that I saw the midwife this morning and the baby has turned closer to head down position but still not engaged yet, although we're getting closer so that's good...her arms and legs are facing towards my tummy though so that's why I'm seeing lumps and bumps so often. Ideally she would have her back towards my tummy which is supposed to be better, so hopefully she stops being a rascal and flips around ๐Ÿ˜ Next appointment is in 3 weeks at 38 weeks...when the midwife said that labour can be expected any time after 37 weeks so I might've had the baby by then, it all felt a bit far too real! Part of me can't quite believe this is going to happen so soon, and I'm sure most of us feel a little bit like that, but excited too. I've never held a baby in my life so hopefully I don't look completely clueless when she's born...I'm hoping that instincts will kick in and I'll somehow work it all out as I go along, which I know that everyone has to do to an extent ๐Ÿ˜„

She was saying something interesting too, that the midwives in my unit anyway don't 'routinely' do vaginal examinations and of course you can refuse if you want, but that actually they don't reveal that much about which stage of labour you're at. They pay more attention to your behaviour during contractions and apparently all women react the same way when you go into the transitional stage (which is going to be great fun! ๐Ÿ™„), so they have a better idea by watching behavioural cues, what's happening. I just found that interesting as I had always though vaginal examinations were the norm and regularly done (and I suppose they would do them regularly if there was a particular reason) but maybe I won't be prodded quite as much as I was expecting, which I'm not complaining about! She also spoke about pooing in labour (hah sorry, this seems to be a theme running through my last few posts!) and that if we do it's very positive because it shows that everything is happening as it should...I'm still going to be embarrassed if that happens, but again I suppose by then I might not care!

She mentioned trying to express a little bit of colostrum/milk from 38 weeks just to get used to it, so I'll see how that goes and if I'm able. She recommended the Haaka breast pump which another poster mentioned recently, so I think I'll get one as it might be useful. She said you just basically put it on and then sit there and it does everything for you, so it would be good if it works. As with anything new though I'm sure it's going to take quite a bit of time and practice.

I asked about nappy cream aswell, because some things I've read didn't recommend using any, but surely you'd use something if baby needs it...she said that Sudocrem is the worst thing to put on a baby's skin but I'm not sure why! She did recommend one called Bepanthen which has really good reviews, so I got a tube at Asda today just incase. She mentioned one in a yellow tube aswell which also has good reviews, so I got one of those too, as one might be better than the other, who knows!

Something came to mind to mention aswell, that in one of my antenatal classes they recommended preparing a clear freezer zip lock type bag with a baby vest, baby grow/sleep suit, hat and nappy, and write 'for theatre' on it, to go in your baby's bag for hospital. Just incase of having to go for a section or something, it would be easy for your partner to find in the bag and means that everything is to hand for the baby in that kind of situation. It seems like a good tip and helps to be prepared for all scenarios, so I think I'll do that aswell.

Enjoy the rest of your weekends and hope you are all doing well xx

@Gaily82 I think the yellow tube nappy cream she mentioned will have been yellow metanium, itโ€™s magic stuff

strawberrysummer19 · 05/06/2022 19:22

I'm 33 wks Tuesday is anyone else experiencing a really sore bump?
It's more like a sensitive/sore to touch skin mainly around the belly button
My maternity pillow I sleep with irritates it as does wearing clothes! At home I wear pjs and a bra top with no clothes touching it

I cream and use oil - I've googled it
Ligament pain, skin stretching etc can't seem to find anything on it

Just feel bit fed up thinking it will feel like this for next 6wks ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

NamelessBaby1 · 05/06/2022 19:35

@strawberrysummer19 that sounds unpleasant, I haven't had any soreness like that, just a bit of discomfort when it gets tight now and again!

@SamanthaVimes @Gaily82 yep that's definitely the yellow tube of cream, I got told to use that too and it was on special offer on Amazon recently so bought a fair few tubes of it in.

I have all my hospital bag stuff in separate plastic bags with labels so my husband can find stuff easily...at least that's the plan, haha. Also started buying some cereal bars and whatnot that I can take in for snacks. All starting to feel quite surreal!

Spent the past few days decorating and refurbishing and building new furniture etc, ended up absolutely conked out today lol. At least my house is looking good though, just a few more wee bits and bobs to do which I'll get on with when I'm on mat leave.

strawberrysummer19 · 05/06/2022 19:37

It's actually making me feel so fed up
I'm not sure if I should call in GP or midwife
Googling things worrying something could be wrong and feeling like I want some
Reassurance and for also to not have so much discomfort but if I know it's all normal then I'd feel better
Like maybe the skin stretching?
I do have a very big bump x

NamelessBaby1 · 05/06/2022 19:40

I'd say it's worth contacting your midwife, she'll reassure you if nothing else, and I'm sure they get all sorts of questions about all sorts of things!

annie1994 · 05/06/2022 20:22

@Mattieandmummy thank you for your help! I never did it with my first child as I was absolutely clueless about all things breast feeding. Tbh Iโ€™m still clueless but I do remember syringing colostrum for my DS1 after he was born as we struggled to latch. I just want to make breastfeeding as easy as I can for myself so thought maybe having some in the freezer would help take pressure off me but maybe itโ€™s not worth the risk!!

ShellUK09 · 05/06/2022 20:35

@Gaily82 lovely to hear from you and glad to hear your baby is turning closer to head down. I have another growth scan this week so praying mine hasn't moved back now! I'll be 34 weeks tomorrow, how fast did that go! I'm with you on feeling very naive, I haven't held a baby before either. I'm sure it will all be maternal instinct, hopefully! I was wondering about asking if they don't do vaginal checks all the time in labour as I think it will make me more on edge, will see what the midwife says. Think I have to make my birth plan this week at the midwife appt, all very real now! I'm going to see if water birth is available or if not just to bounce on a birthing ball, but I feel you can't really plan too much as sometimes things are taken out of your hands anyway. Got carried away in Matalan today and bought a few outfits even though I know we will get lots of clothes as presents, it's still nice to get some things that you like yourself โ˜บ๏ธ

Mattieandmummy · 05/06/2022 20:46

@annie1994 you're welcome, I'm happy to try and answer any bf questions if it helps. I'm not an expert by any means but I did breastfeed my first for two years (only planned on one year but she had other ideas) so might be able to help.

Having a bit of a wobble today. DC1 has come home from an overnight with DMIL for the first time in 3 months due to DMILs fractured shoulder. Eyes hanging out of head (both DC1 and 72 yr old DMIL, actually) because DMIL won't tell DC1 to go back to their own bed at 5am. Won't tell DC1 no to anything, feeds total crap on demand ( even though I'm proud that DC1 at 5 can tell her what is and isn't healthy, and does!!) and apparently has been driving now even though she can't lift her arm to do physio yet with her shoulder. I don't have any family here and I'm thinking that DH can only really be at the hospital with me when DC1 is at school because I won't be able to function if I think DC1 is at risk with DMIL. I'm not exaggerating or being overly cautious, DH agrees and is planning to speak to DMIL tomorrow to see if he can get her to understand that she's not been making great choices for a while now and we're worried about leaving DC1 with her because of it. It's causing both of us a lot of stress There's friction between us now because he has to tackle it.

I know DSIL is more cautious than us and DMIL takes her seriously when she puts her foot down about rules but I feel like because we're so grateful for any help we haven't set any boundaries in the past. This is now backfiring because she ridicules us if we try to explain why DC1 doesn't need 6 hotdogs as a snack ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. She is overstepping in other ways too, DC1 coming home in clothes we didn't and wouldn't buy even though there are plenty of clothes in the overnight bag is a particular bugbear of mine. It's like DMIL is the divorced parent or something ๐Ÿ˜ค

Sorry for the rant just am terrified now that there's a chance that I'll be giving birth alone because DH will have to look after DC1. I don't think we have enough time to get DMIL to see sense before I give birth.

NotAsOldAsIFeel · 05/06/2022 22:36

@strawberrysummer19 yes I've been having this pain too, also always around my belly button though it can move around that area a little. My midwife thought it was likely just an internal bruise from baby sticking a limb out and leaving it in one position for too long. It's very uncomfortable for something so trivial though! Still worth a mention to your midwife next time you see them, but mine didn't seem at all concerned. Hope it settles for you a bit!
