I had lots of scans for my baby as it was big because I had gestaional diabetes. They said they are better at predicting the weight in smaller babies than bigger ones. Mine was over a 1lb heavier than they said. They offered me c/s or induction and wouldn't offer an opinion but the harbinger of doom consultant said if I had him induced the shoulders might get stuck and become paralysed as gestational diabetic babies have bigger torsos and if I had a c/s he may have problems breathing. Which would I prefer?? He gave no opionion! hmmm paralysed/not able to breathe....great choice.

I didn't want to be induced after a long labour (and I would have to be tied to glucose and insulin drips all the time) then c/s so I went with elective c/s. Which was absolutely fine. I told people it wasn't that I was too posh to push but the baby was too podgy to push!

Hi

Went to the scan yesterday and my baby is 36 weeks measuring all round head circumference, body, femur etc. Told big baby and that if I have not naturally gone into labour by beg Jan they will help me along a little (by that I presume they will induce me) So I guess the consultant knows himself that I will go into labour naturally before my EDD of 4th Feb - the baby is 4/5ths engaged so I guess I had better just keep hoping and praying it stays in a few more weeks until my house is fully decorated and my setee is here hehehee!!!!!.......Doc said if I have in next 5 weeks baby will be a fair size whatever that is supposed to mean hehehee - dont think he wanted to commit to an estimated weight incase he was wrong.

I was told that DS was 'average' size. I had a 3 day labour that ended in an emergency c-section due to the fact I did not dilate past 4 cm in 56 hours. He was 10lb and half and ounce.

For some bizarre reason I was convinced my second child was going to be 'normal' size and I planned a vbac.

At 37 weeks I had a scan that put the baby at 9lbs 3 oz. I still was in denial and was determined to have my vbac. The hospital would not let me go over due by that much and at 40+3 I had another scan that showed a reduction in fluid.

I was induced ... nothing happened. After 8 hours I was induced again and after 12 hours I was 2 cm. DH and I decided not to bother with the vbac and I had another c-section ... DD was 10lbs 10oz!!!!

But of course it is not just the weight that determines an easy birth ... both my children have enormous heads (can't find hats to fit them) and they were both in the posterior position ... and I have a small pelvis ... so not surprising I had to have c-sections really.

Sorry for the ramble!!!

Hi, I was measuring B4D's with my ds. He arrived 2 weeks early and was 8lb 12oz. Emergency c-section after 48 hours. I thought 1st babies were always small and late! Oh and dates were deff right as ds was still covered in lanugo fur and jaundice

Awenamanger · 07/12/2004 06:52

omg jane they never told me that about gestational diabetes babies.. i had it too.. hence huge baby. Did you little one have shakes after?

eidsvold · 07/12/2004 12:39

they got it right for me - they predicted early on that my babe would be big.... at 36 weeks they said the babe was measuring 38 weeks... predicted if I went to term babe would be about 4kgs. babe was born by c-section 10 days late and was 4.28 kgs (9lb 7oz)

Podmog · 07/12/2004 12:57

I gave birth to ds1(baby no.3) 12 weeks ago.He weighed 10lbs 2 oz.Gas and air only.Needed 8 stitches due to an old tear opening up slightly. He was overdue and I was induced with pessaries. However the only person to pick up on the fact baby was big was the delivery m/w who was fantastic. His shoulders did get slightly stuck but they used a procedure involving 6 other m/w's.His head was also big, but m/w was a fab coach who helped me deliver in such a way I did not tear.By the way I am only 5ft tall!

No Awenamanger he grunted a lot to get rid of the liquid(?) in his lungs that would have been expelled in the birth process. So they took him to the neonatal unit but they said his lungs were fine. He had to go back in overnight the next day cos his sigar levels were bad and they fed him with a tube whilst my milk came in. It was scary but he was ok. He needed forceps even though he was c/s as he was 10lbs 9oz!

DS was 10lbs (13 days late), and had been predicted to be 9lb-I've heard repeatedly that growth scans are not accurate. It was a long labour, but the 2nd stage really was OK-I was glad to push. He came out no trouble at all. I did have to have stitches but delivered him on my back, so maybe it's not surprising. I'm now expecting Babe No. 2 on Jan 28th, and it's looking like a big 'un. I've been worried about the shoulder thing, but I've recently heard 2 things about shoulder dystocia:

-My midwife told me this morning that shoulders getting stuck doesn't only happen with big babies-it can just as easily happen with a smaller baby, and is more to do with mother's pelvis and baby positioning

-I've just read that, if shoulders do get stuck, the best position is on all fours, as this is when your pelvis is most open.

Everyone seems to have a different story. Good luck anyway to all you big baby expecters! Grin

hi i had my ds 15days late and he was 9lb 1oz...but was delivered naturally in hr and half.....it was fine..i wouldnt worry about the sizes too much as if you worry you will stress

Awenamanger · 09/12/2004 09:14

I am kinda of glad I didnt go temr.. could deliver 8lb 12 , c-section after 48 hours followed by complications. If had gone term would have been 10lb. Gestational diabetes aside, i thought the 1st one is meant ot be small... just wondering how big the next ones are going to be.. (only 5'2" and size 4 feet)

Awenamanger · 09/12/2004 09:15

opps 'coudln't'

artyjoe · 14/12/2004 23:14

Got to go to hospital again in the morning due to a plus on protein but I'm also 35 weeks and now measuring 44 cms...another growth spurt of 6 cms in only 7 days!

They are talking about a c section by January 3rd, but I can hardly walk now due to spd pain and generally HUGE bump...would anyone ask for it earlier, say 37 weeks?

Spacecadetiscomingtotown · 15/12/2004 21:24

Artyjoe I asked to be induced early due to my baby measuring an est 7lbs at 34 weeks back in June.previous ds had been 9lb 7oz at 38 weeks. The consultant agreed to induce on the grounds of the baby possibly being 10lbs plus at term and they induced at 38 weeks,They dont generally like to induce earlier than 38 weeks because its better for the baby to stay inside the womb for as long as poss.Speak to your consultant if they see how concerned you are they may consider delivery at 38 weeks, that said my dd ended weighing 8lbs 3oz at 38 weeks so not quite the 10/11lb whopper they were antipating!!! she would have been about 9lb if she went to term, but im still glad she was delivered a bit earlier.

Spacecadetiscomingtotown · 15/12/2004 21:25

forgot to add that in your case it would be c-section at 38 weeks, sorry!

Spacecadetiscomingtotown · 15/12/2004 21:29

just realised how far into dec we are, you will be about 38 weeks when your section is scheduled?sorry my brain, this is what 4 children does to you!! you can certainly ask for c-section at 37 weeks, but do you really want to be in hosp over christmas?
