my first was 8lb3oz at 37.5 weeks, waters broke at 8.30 had him less than 2 and a quarter hours later.

my second was 3 days late and weighed 8lb13oz. labour was just short of 2 hours

my 3rd was born at 36 weeks and weighed in at 8lb14.5oz. midwives had thought he was gonna be about 9lb full term. his labour was 2.5 hrs. he weighed 10lb2oz on his due date, after losing 8oz in his first few days!

all three labours were straight forward, gas & air only. no assistance in any form.

the scans aren't always right about size. they never said anything about ds weight

Bozza · 24/11/2004 10:56

DS was 9 lb 10 (I'm size 5 btw) and took some pushing out - 2 hours and an episiotomy. I wanted a homebirth with no2 but the midwife was worried that I was getting too big (doing the measuring with tape thing) and thought baby would be bigger than DS (ie over 10 lb) so I was referred to consultant who had no worries. Had homebirth with DD who took 3 pushes to deliver - waters broke at 7.44 am and she was born at 7.46 am. She was 8lb 12 oz and actually seemed small to us.

rydercup · 24/11/2004 12:11

Hi - I measured big for dates throughout my whole last pregnancy and was sent for repeated scans. At 36 weeks they told me the baby weighed 7lb 7ozs - I went to 42 weeks and based on their calculations should have given birth to a 10lb 7oz baby - he was actually 8lb 15 oz in the end!

Spacecadet · 24/11/2004 16:06

All mine have been big but they never got it right, for my eldest 3 I was told they were all average weight yet my dd was 8lbs 9 oz at term, ds1 was 8lbs at 36.5 weeks!! and ds2 was 9lbs 7oz at 38 wekks!! both ds's were inductions , I dread to think what they would have been full term.with recent dd born in july, they said at 34 weeks she was full term weight and so induced me at 38 weeks expecting her to be 9lbs then, but she was a neat 8lbs 3oz phew!!! twenty mins of pushing and she was out, no stiches or pain releif as my labour was just 1hour from start to finish, all of them have been normal deliveries.they dont always get it right on those growth scans but if they thought your baby was going to really big they would probably induce if you were concerened.

Poo2 · 24/11/2004 16:14

I measured consistently enormous for dates, and only narrowly avoided a late scan for growth. I am 6'1 with size 9.5 feet, so wasn't expecting a tidy little 7 pounder! They were predicting a 10lb baby, but were only reccomending I consider the possibility of an epidural incase of assistance. Anyway, I had my ds 3 days late with no drugs or gas and air and he weighed 8lb 10! No stitches at all. Turns out I had more waters than Niagra Falls!

artyjoe · 24/11/2004 16:42

I had my growth scan today and was told to possibly anticipate C section due to baby being 6.5 pounds and I'm only 32 weeks! Booked in again for 22nd December to see if she has grown to 5kg where the doctor kindly told me 'we'll try for a natural labour but the baby's shoulder will probably get stuck and we'll have to do a C section' - great!

jolly4 · 24/11/2004 21:51

oh that seems heavy artyjoe how do you feel what number is this baby you will have too let us know how you get on !!!!!!xxxx

artyjoe, When i had big baby my obst told me pletny of women have big babies and told me there was no need to induce me early or have a c-section. DS was 5.1 kilos and got him out just fine. Got a bit stuck but one last push for England did the job!

janeybops · 24/11/2004 22:02

suppose it depends on hospital policy and the doc you are seeing!?

jolly4 · 24/11/2004 22:04

janeybops · 24/11/2004 22:11

Bear in mind the woman doc who said this to me was tiny and obviously hadn't had a LARGE baby! So I thought it was rather easy for her to say!

Spacecadet · 25/11/2004 09:01

Docs dont like to risk vaginally delivering v large babies because of the risk of complications, however they normally like to induce at 38 weeks rather than perform a section, I have pushed all my babies out but the 9lb 7oz did get a bit stuck but I still managed it , some women push out 12lb babies, ouch!!

artyjoe · 25/11/2004 09:15

The doctor has already told me he won't induce, not sure why, probably got something to do with my weight as this seems to be a bigger problem than I'd believed at the beginning of my pregnancy.

He has said either all out vaginal delivery, with prospect of shoulders getting stuck (ouch) or C Section... if she's 5KG at 36 weeks then I can't even imagine what she'll be at full term so I'm hoping my hysteria will win the day and terrify them into doing something rather than let me go to 40 weeks for a vaginal delivery.

I'm huge and severely waddling already with dreadful groin and pelvic pain so lord only knows how I'll get to 40 weeks with double the size baby!

This is my first pregnancy and first baby after being told 9 years ago that I couldn't have children, so have found living in denial has worked really well for me, up until yesterday!

Not sure whether to take the raspberry leaf now!

smellymelly · 25/11/2004 09:50

I don't see why they have to give you a c-section, Artyjoe. Don't let them push you into something you don't want, I would of thought being induced at 38 weeks would be a better option.

Spacecadet · 25/11/2004 10:09

They normally only do a c-section if they think that your pelvis isnt big enough to accomodate the babys passage , is this possibly why they are wanting to perform a section??

artyjoe · 25/11/2004 10:52

I'm assuming they are thinking of a C section because they are expecting the baby to be 12 pounds at 36 weeks, so she'll probably weigh a stone at 38! Obviously we'll know more in three weeks when I have another scan.

TBH, if she's 12 pounds at 36 weeks then I'm happy to have a C section rather than attempt a normal delivery... I'd like to be able to walk again

janeybops · 25/11/2004 11:08

As it is your first and that big perhaps it would be wiser to go the c-section route. Mine was 5.1 kilos but was my second. Managed with no intervention - just... I think they were getting ready to ventuse him out when he popped out.

If he had been my first I would have had trouble, because I was really crap at pushing with number 1 and it took hours, even though she was only 8 lbs.

janeybops · 25/11/2004 11:10

Also empaphise with the uncomfortable feelings I went to 41 and half weeks and could barely move for the last month.

mears · 25/11/2004 11:10

artyjoe - try not to get too concerned about the size of baby on scan. Estimated fetal weights by scan can be grossly inaccurate - I see that every day at work.

Spacecadet · 25/11/2004 13:52

artyjoe, with my 3rd baby i was induced at 38 weeks because he didnt miove much and I had a fetal growth scan 2 days before that said he weighed 7lbs, he actually weighed 9lbs 7 oz!!!with dd my latest, they induced me at 38 weeks because scans had suggested she would be massive, iilbs I was told at term!! 34 weeks was told she was 7lbs so they induced me at 38 and she was 8lbs 3oz!! ok so she would have 9 had she gone to term but nowhere near the 11lbs they predicted!!!

artyjoe · 26/11/2004 17:19

Apparently to qualify for my private health cover my pelvis has to be too small to deliver the baby...if growth scans are so out, how can they decide that my pelvis is too small? Is there another scan that can be done?

I'm trying very hard to put it to the back of my mind until 22nd so I can get through the next few weeks without being constantly terrified! C section frightens me, but not as much as a dreadful labour, shoulder getting stuck and then emergency C section...

MissyLooby · 05/12/2004 11:38

I am now 31 weeks pregnant and measuring 37 weeks - having a growth scan tomorrow but very worried. On my last scan @ 29 weeks babys estimated weight was 4lb and my bump has grown 7cms since then in only a few weeks - I am very worried as its my first as to what the docs will do. I am only 5ft 3in with size 4 feet and wasnt really expecting to have a big baby. Very worried to say the least at the moment.

jolly4 · 05/12/2004 22:09

I was told at about 31 weeks (at an emergency scan) that if my baby was to be born then it would be 9lb+. I went full term and she was 8lb 8oz so don't worry too much - they might be wrong.

My aunty gave birth to my cousin who was 10lb 4oz so count yourself lucky - ouch!!!!!
