I am being advised to take drugs to expel the fetus but wondering if I should wait another week and have another scan?

Anyone with any thoughts or experience here?

I don't know for sure but I seem to remember reading that it can be hard to pick up the heart beat this early. I'm sure someone on here will know. So sorry you are going through this.

paulaplumpbottom · 08/01/2008 16:15

If you feel that you wouyld like to wait you should. Nothing wrong with being absolutly sure

fingerwoman · 08/01/2008 16:16

I would wait and get another scan as well. just in case

lulumama · 08/01/2008 16:16

are there other indications that this is a missed miscarriage? e.g size of foetus? if it is just re the heartbeat, i would try to wait, as it can be hard to pick it up this early....terrible worry though

expatinscotland · 08/01/2008 16:17

I'd wait.

I suffered a missed miscarriage recently and only felt it was truly over when that third scan when I was supposed to be about 10 weeks revealed a foetus that was way too small for dates and no heartbeat.

I hope things work out differently for you!

Bettergetabucket · 08/01/2008 16:18

Oh love - I would wait until you are absolutely sure, or even better, if you have a dr friend, get them to ask a respected obs and gynae friend for the real low down. From personal experience I;ve miscarried at 7 weeks and had a bleed at 7 weeks - the internal scan showed a heartbeat (ds)xx

BumblBeee · 08/01/2008 16:19

the fetus looks the right size and i am not bleeding

OP posts:
BumblBeee · 08/01/2008 16:21

The seem to want me to get rid of it medically to avoid the risk of miscarrying somewhere with heavy bleeding and no one to help me.

I don't know how often this scenario happens to people?

expatinscotland: did you take the drugs or have a dc ?

I had a bleed at 7 weeks and was sent for a scan. The consultant was very clear before she scanned that they may not see a heartbeat at 7 weeks. They did see a heartbeat and the fetus was 11mm at 7+4 I think. Have they checked your hcg levels? Why were you having an early scan (if you don't mind me asking)? Did they say anything else about the viability of the pregnancy that may have led them to believe you are miscarrying?

I'm sorry this is such a horrible, confusing time for you.

mumofk · 08/01/2008 16:24

Did you have some symptoms you were worried about to have a scan so early? Do you feel your pregnancy has stopped? If you aren't sure, there is no harm in waiting until you feel sure in yourself its the right thing to do. That may take another scan, but you also may feel better just waiting for nature to let things happen naturally, which could be a few weeks. Seeing a fetal pole, with no heart beat means it is unlikely for everything to be ok. Does the scan appearances tie in with your dates? I mean, did you think you were further on than that?
Don't feel you have to make a decision straight away either- hopefully you've got a contact number so when you do decide (even if thats not to do anything yet) you can talk to the health professionals too.
Sorry you've had such bad news.

lulumama · 08/01/2008 16:24

well, i think you feel in your gut you want to wait, a miscarriage that is not medically induced does not neccesarily mean a life threatening bleed.

paulaplumpbottom · 08/01/2008 16:35

If they were very concerned about bleeding they could admit you but don't let them talk you into anything until you are sure.

expatinscotland · 08/01/2008 16:36

i had a D&C, bumble.

drug-induced miscarriage was not a good option for me as i live in a very rural area a long way from consultant-led hospital care.

BumblBeee · 08/01/2008 16:38

i had a scan on 21/12 where they just saw an empty space, then they did blood tests which were good, now they see the baby but no heartbeat.

I had a miscarriage 2 months ago and got pregnant right afterwards by mistake. They told me to 'come in for an early scan the next time you are pregnant' after the miscarriage.

I feel it would have been better not to have any scans and just let things develop naturally.

I don't know why the think I would have a massive hemorrhage anyway. I have no history of blood problems.

how bloody awful for you, i would request another scan to be sure in my own mind, else you may have that doubt looming over you forever. Im sure they will understand why and how you are feeling. Also if you dont want to induce the miscarriage - DONT, do what YOU feel is right (especially as you say there are no medical reasons to do so) Your body knows best and nature will take its course in good time. Lots of love to you x

BumblBeee · 08/01/2008 17:31

Thanks everyone. I think I will go for at least one more scan.

if you got pg on the cycle after a miscarriage, it is highly possible that you ovulated later than normal, and are therefore not quite as far along as you think, particularly if they were happy with the blood tests

I would definitely ask for another scan for your own peace of mind. There were signs of development between your last two scans, IMO there is always hope until there is no sign of change between scans, or you've nad a HB & then it goes.

sorry about your previous loss

spugs · 09/01/2008 13:24

im sorry hun, it depends on the size of the fetal plole, if the poles over 6mm long then they would expect to see a hb.i had the same sort of thing happen with my mc, no heart beat at 6 1/2 week but as the fetal ploe was over 6mm (9mm) they said that the baby was lost. i didnt have another scan and had the tablet treatment to bring on the mc. but for your own peace of mind i would have another scan as sometimes you cant help but wonder [hugs]

paulaplumpbottom · 09/01/2008 19:00

How are you feeling about things today hun?

whomovedmychocolate · 09/01/2008 19:12

Bumblebeee - I know this is absolutely sodding horrible but you still have some hope. I had an early scan at allegedly five weeks after a bleed - no heartbeat. Scanned two weeks later and told I was nine + 5 (heartbeat, normal size etc). Early scans can be very unreliable and the fetal heartbeat sometimes just doesn't turn up on the textbook day!

BumblBeee · 09/01/2008 21:22

What is the fetal pole? Is there any danger involved in induced miscarriage.

I am feeling calmer today.

I am also going to ask them to give me a blood test for listeria.

hi my friend had this problema while back. she went for an early scan due to a previous m/c a few months before and they said that no heartbeat could be found at 7 weeks. she was devastated and went home very upset. they had given her the option to take a tablet or have a d&c or let thing happen naturally. she decided to let it happen naturally and after 2 weeks still hadnt mc'd she went back for a scan only to find a healthy- sized feotus with a heartbeat. she put a complaint into the hospital as she could have had an awful experience due to the fact that the hospital werent thorough enough. she now has a healthy DS and is obv glad she waited and checked again.
HTH
sorry you are having to deal with this for you xx

BumblBeee · 09/01/2008 21:50
