Bleeding early pregnancy - please help

I conceived through IVF and am 5 weeks pregnant tomorrow. This am when I went to the loo I noticed blood. It may have been due to straining but it was from my vagina (sorry tmi) I panicked. Cried a lot but then checked again a few minutes later there’s no more bleeding from there. Maybe it wasn’t therefore a period or miscarriage. I called the clinic and they said some women do get bleeding early pregnancy or it could be threatened miscarriage so to rest and hope that everything will be okay. It’s been around five hours since and no more blood so keeping my fingers crossed. Has anyone experienced? Any advice or reassurance would be massively experienced. Other than miscarriage why is there bleeding early pregnancy?
Thanks

It's one of the scariest feelings, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

The short answer is that no-one can tell you whether it's okay or not, but that very often it does turn out to be totally fine. It happened to me in pregnancy (though a bit later on than you) and I was terrified.

You'll probably need to get scanned to confirm what's going on, though before six weeks it's very hard for them to tell whether the pregnancy is viable or not. Your local early pregnancy unit is the best place to go, and they'll triage you and talk you through things. They're generally only open during the week though.

Good luck to you - I really hope that it's okay Flowers

I had this and it was a subchorionic hematoma. Confirmed after 7 weeks with an internal scan.
I had red streaky blood on wiping, and over the next week or so
Had brown discharge on and off.
Everything worked out fine with my pregnancy.
It’s hard, but don’t stress your body out x

Are you using vaginal pessaries?

I conceived DS Via ivf and was in 4 pessaries a day. I bled the day before OTD. Then at 9 weeks had a big bleed. Thought it was all over. Had a scan. Baby was fine. The pessaries were irritating my cervix. Your cervix is much more vascular during pregnancy and can bleed very easily. Especially if you are using the applicators.

DS is now an amazing little toddler and have I have conceived again (naturally) and have bled twice in this pregnancy (no pessaries) and both times been fine. Some
Women do just bleed and they never know why. It is very common. However. I completely understand the worry it gives.

Put a pad on and monitor. Ring the clinic on Monday for advice.

Hope all turns out well

@Whatelsecouldibecalled Yes I am using the pessaries. This is very reassuring, thanks so much for taking the time too reply. I’ve had no blood since so will monitor but fingers crossed there is none. Such an anxious time! Congrats on your pregnancy - you must be thrilled to have conceived naturally.

I had this with my third pregnancy and was told to stay on bed and rest till it stopped. Thankfully it did. I hope yours is just a false alarm and that it will settle.

BeccaT123 · 02/04/2022 21:45

@LittleGwyneth Thanks so much! The clinic told me to increase progesterone and going in for a blood test Tues am so fingers crossed it’s good news and there’s no more bleeding.

If it helps I have never bled so much as I did on my most successful pregnancy - delivered a healthy baby girl at 40 weeks, bleeds at 6 weeks, 12 weeks, 15 weeks, I hope this is similar for you

Twizbe · 02/04/2022 21:47

I bled on and off throughout the first trimester with both my kids. With my second I had two proper gushes!

I had a subchoronic heamatoma for both and that was causing most of the bleeding.

I developed a cervical ectropion which accounted for some other bleeding too.

It's super scary but hopefully they'll scan you in a week or so.

In the mean time if you have blood, lie on your left hand side and take it easy.

BeccaT123 · 02/04/2022 21:47

@Mischance Thank you! Yes I am resting! Glad you were okay. These reassuring stories are super helpful!

@GreyTS Thank you! Appreciate that

Oh yes, pessaries irritate and make your cervix so much more likely to bleed

BeccaT123 · 02/04/2022 21:49

@Twizbe Thank you for your kind msg. I am going to look up subchorionic hematoma . Maybe it’s that! Feel relieved I haven’t seen blood since but every time I go to the loo I get anxiety!

I remember that. I was on constant knicker watch.

My eldest was conceived the cycle before we started IVF after a 2.5 year TTC journey. I had a big bleed at 9 weeks with him and was convinced I'd lost him. I was devastated thinking what a cruel world it was.

We went to a scan the next day and saw his heart beat. He was fine and is now 5!

It wasn't as scary with my second as I knew me being pregnant meant blood.

mydudero · 02/04/2022 22:08

I know it's not the same as I didn't have IVF and my bleed was at 28 weeks but I remember the fear and just wanted to send you some love. I was kept in for a few nights for observation but it was concluded that it was an ectropion on my cervix that had bled and wasn't a risk to the pregnancy. It was still terrifying though and I wish you all the best from the bottom of my heart xx

BeccaT123 · 02/04/2022 22:35

@mydudero Thank you so much for your kind message.

@Twizbe Thank you. I feel much better reading this message and others.

I will let you all know how I get on xx

I am an ivf pregnancy and I bled in early pregnancy because of the pressaires irritated everything I was on them 4 times a day. Only small bleeds when wiping nothing heavy tho . I stop as soon as I was told not to take pressaires anymore. I am currently 36 weeks pregnant with my ivf baby xxx

BeccaT123 · 03/04/2022 02:32

@Hoping1Thanks for your message. That’s good to know. I only take a pessary once a day (they just increased to twice) as i take a lubion injection every am - wondering if I’m getting enough progesterone now but assume the injection gives me a fair bit. Congrats on your pregnancy!!

I haven’t had any bleeding since earlier (around 10 hours now) so hoping that’s a good sign and it wasn’t the start of a miscarriage? Not sure how it works but I guess I’ll find out soon.

@BeccaT123 I had the same 2 days ago , I was 5+6 days and had gush of red bleed , happened once , then stopped for the rest of the day and night , went to scan the next day and all was fine , it was subchorionic hematoma. , it’s like a blood clot in uterus that will reabsorb at some point or bleed out, I had no pain or cramping just the blood ! So if you didn’t have pain or cramping I would say it’s subchorionic hematoma. specially as it didn’t carry on for you after that one bleed .!

ShareLove · 03/04/2022 07:08

@BeccaT123 but problem is you’re a bit early too see much on scan , I was 5+6 and saw heartbeat ect, you might not yet , but they can defanetly see subchorionic hematoma if you have One so you know where the bleeding came from . I also panicked . Also my pregnancy is ivf . I am on lubion and 3 pessaries a day , 600mg total , you’re 1 (now 2)!pessarie doesn’t sound like a lot …

BeccaT123 · 03/04/2022 12:39

Thank you so much @ShareLove Fingers crossed it’s that! I am going into the clinic after the weekend and they will check my bloods for HCG and progesterone level - maybe I need to increase that as it does sound like everyone else is on a lot more than me! I am sure they will scan too.

I am actually having some slight cramping this am but no bleeding - maybe it’s just an upset stomach or normal pregnancy cramping 🤞

OP posts:
ShareLove · 03/04/2022 13:25

@BeccaT123 light cramping is fine , iv have it all the way to 6 weeks , it’s like on and off . It’s normal , as long as you don’t bleed anymore or bleed with cramps you’ll be okay ! Really good sign for you that bleeding stopped , Smile

I started spotting blood at 5 weeks too! It came one or twice a week until 12 weeks - then every 2/3 weeks! I'm 28 weeks today. It's way more common than you think! 1/3 women will spot in the first trimester, it doesn't help your nerves though but might give you some sense of reassurance xxx
My spotting has made my mental health plummet, I still cry and have panic attacks when it happens - totally know how you feel xx
