Bleeding, Empty Uterus but Positive pregnancy test

Please help - I know I have lost the pregnancy but not sure what is now going on.....

At 6 wks pg I started bleeding on Xmas day. I have two young chidlren and just knew that something was wrong as bleeding really red and small stringy bits. Anyway I got my head around the fact I had miscarried and after about 5 days bleeding stopped but then started again couple of days later and 2 weeks later is just a red as day 1. I have had cramps throughout.

So.....today I went for a scan to check everything has come away which it had - at least they said nothing is showing in my uterus but I had a +ve pregnancy test and my cervix (after an internal) was not open at all which it should be if normal miscarriage. I don't feel it's Ectopic and have to wait for a second blood test on Weds to check hormone levels but is hard to wait until then - I just want closure so I can move on. Could is just be one of those things? Someone else at the hspital said they only bled heavily for 2 days with a miscarriage and then had a negative result.

Any ideas if you can have ectopic without one sided pain (I have had heavy cramps and a lot of bowel movements) or what else this is?

Dr said most +ve results are due to tissues being left behind but I don't have any according to scan - ahhhh!
x

It can take a while for the hormone levels to drop after a m/c so a test will still show positive when the baby has been lost.

for you.

Lcy · 07/01/2008 17:53

So sorry about your miscarriage - how are you feeling?

Your cervix is probably closed because the miscarriage is complete (i.e. empty uterus on scan). A positive pregnancy test will take a while to go away (maybe a couple of weeks) because the HCG has to leave your body. Hopefully the blood tests will show that the HCG levels are falling. With regards to bleeding - it never seems to be straight forward after miscarriage, mine kept stopping and starting. You did the right thing to go and get a scan and it sounds like you are getting the appropriate care.

Take care x

when you went for your scan, did they scan your fallopian tubes and ovaries as well?

you can still have a +ve result for a few weeks after a miscarriage.

I think you should be reassured that your uterus is empty, so hopefully it is all complete. Bleeding can take a few days to stop even if the uterus is empty (so I was told by a doctor).

I'm sorry to hear you are going through this. I've just had a m/c at six weeks as well, so know a little of what you are going through.

NatalieJane · 07/01/2008 18:05

Roca, I am going through a MC at the moment, if you need to talk, I'm here (Though, I don't really know about the ins and outs of the medical side of things, never been through it before.)

VictorianSqualor · 07/01/2008 18:14

What kind of scan did they do? IIRC, when expat? m/c'd her uterus appeared empty on one scan but wasn't on an iternal one or something, sorry, that's probably no help at all.

Roca · 07/01/2008 18:15

Thanks all - I was really quite ok about it all but now it's just dragging on a bit it has brought me down again (just want bleeding to end) - think I have gone a bit fuzzy thinking as the logical explanation is of course that it has all gone and it was just a straightforward miscarriage. It's only that the hospital never actually used the words complete miscarriage but just said that had to rule out ectopic that got me all confused again!

Of course I am sure that the hormone levels will show all normal and the bleeding will stop soon etc etc.

Thanks for all your logical and heartfelt advice. Sorry for things you have been /going through. I was just really gutted - think am eager to get trying again maybe which is why I want this all sorted.

How long did other bleed for / have a +ve result for.

I will defo let you know what results say on Wednesday, in the meantime I am determined not to put life on hold.

did they scan your fallopian tubes? have you got any backache? when i had my ep ihad loose bowels and awful backache, but no real one sided pain. im thinking of you, i know how awful this wait is (my hormone levels also doubled normally, so they need to scan you again)

Roca · 07/01/2008 18:17

I had an internal scan and she checked my ovaries which were fine - they just all seemed a bit flustered that I was still positive after 2 weeks - am sure is totally normal and I will chill about it soon.

it is normal to test positive still at this stage. And you could have had quite a few days of bleeding before the actual miscarriage happened. I had six days of very very heavy bleeding, but I'm sure I m/cd on the first day.

It does take a while for your hormones to settle down.

Roca · 07/01/2008 18:25

I don't have back ache or any other EP symtoms I don't think. Sonographer said you couldn't tell an EP just from that scan.

Sorry it is all up in the air for you Roca.

I started bleeding yesterday, had lots of small blood clots, and some 'things' come out yesterday and overnight, and then this morning what I am assuming was the baby came out, just bleeding like a heavey period now.

As I said, I'm no good with the medical side of things, but if you want to talk, I am normally knocking around somewhere.

OracleInaCoracle · 07/01/2008 18:46

oh roca, can i just ask why they couldn't tellfrom the scan

belgo · 07/01/2008 18:52

I think just because they can't see an ectopic pregnancy on a scan, it doens't exclude the possibility totally. The ectopic pregnancy could be in the abdomen for example., or it could still be very small.

My friend's ectopic was diagnosed by hormones in her blood tests.

Roca -please try not to worry, if they suspected an ectopic at the hospital, they would be doing something about it.

You would be very unlucky if this was an ectopic. Just keep an eye on your symptoms, blood loss etc. and if anything changes, gets worse, seek medical attention.

Dropdeadfred · 07/01/2008 18:59

I had + tests for well over a month after a mc at 8 weeks...

Sorry for your loss.

Roca · 07/01/2008 19:08

man, I have so managed to hold it together but feel really crap today - guess it was because I knew scan would confirm things.

Dropdeadfred - did you have any explanation why you still showed +ve test?

One minute I'm like 'right get on with things' then I get a bad wave of pain and think 'hang, on, I've got a right to chill for a bit considering what's going on'

Thank you everybody - at least today I fancy a glass of wine - early pregnancy symptoms have always included going off wine! Am s'posed to be doing some work from home tonight but I think the sofa, soaps and wine may win over!

Dropdeadfred · 07/01/2008 19:12

Roca, no I didn't really but I was told that the hcg levels in the blood test they gave me were very high for a pg of that gestation and they were very slo to drop. I kept being called back for lots of blood tests every week to make sure it as decreasing...took ages and p**ed me off cos I wanted to get on with recovering and trying again!

Roca · 07/01/2008 19:18

Dropdeadfred - that sounds like a mare and exactly what I hope to avoid - have you got any children now / before that m/c?

Dropdeadfred · 07/01/2008 21:06
