I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@Cuppasoupmonster Yeah, I've heard about these glowing pregnant women...Yet to actually meet one though. I really hope you've turned a corner, if not enjoy the respite.

@Lucindae Promathiazine at night and Metaclopramide in the day. I've also got some Vitamin B6 sweeties for good measure.

BellaBella38 · 08/10/2022 14:34

Anyone else struggling to lift their head off the pillow today?

LucindaE · 08/10/2022 18:35

Cuppasoupmonster Thank you so much for your encouraging message. I do hope you are turning a corner. Things tend to get better for sufferers at some point between weeks 14 and 21.
BellaBella38 Sorry to hear that. Often, things are at their worst around weeks 10-11.

Thanks @LucindaE Today has actually been a huge success. It was my mum's birthday lunch so I dosed myself up with an electrolyte drink and some Stemetil and Metaclopramide and managed a good half of a roast dinner and kept it down!

I also told my parents we were pregnant and finally asked for some help. I always have a good stash of leftovers in my freezer bolognese/stew/chilli etc and with my husband still in cough and cold hell, we have absolutely raided the lot! Thankfully there are now a couple of portions in the freezer and she's going to sort us out some more. Never felt so grateful. 🙏

Cuppasoupmonster · 09/10/2022 20:01

Great news Bella!

When did everyone feel ‘ok’ to go without phenergen overnight? It’s zombified me to the point I get up with DD then fall asleep on the sofa as she’s having breakfast. I’m also very groggy throughout the day.

greenerfingers · 10/10/2022 07:45

Hello all, I just had a quick browse. I tend to pop in and out. I'm 33 weeks now and officially a beached whale. Not sure how I'll last another 2 months or so! @BellaBella38 hang in there! Till 20 weeks I looked so bedraggled, dry skin and just eyebag galore. Since my sickness eased I'm now told my face is always glowing 😂, so hopefully the glow is yet to come.

My sickness started to appear again a few weeks ago but only lasted a week or two and then disappeared again. My acid reflux is back but I think for once it's just a normal pregnancy symptom (never had it this late with my first) and I'm managing without meds. So grateful! My smell is on crazy levels though!!

I can't believe it feels like yesterday I was 8 weeks and this group was my crutch. I hope time flies for everyone and the sickness passes and leaves!

ChloeHel · 10/10/2022 11:50

Hello all!! I finally made it to the pink castle!!

Baby girl was born 6th October! Had a painful latent labour but we made it haha. After she was born my body hit me with one last nausea and sickness tidal wave!

Thank you everyone for getting me through the last 8 months. This thread really helped me.

BalletN · 10/10/2022 12:47

@ChloeHel Congratulations!! So glad to hear that your baby girl arrived safely and HG is over for you x

LucindaE · 10/10/2022 19:47

ChloeHel Wonderful news. Star😃BrewCake Congratulations on baby girl. Lovely news. Sorry labour was painful. I am so glad the thread helped. Enjoy her. Welcome to the Pink Castle.
greenerfingers So glad things are better for you. Thank you so much for coming back on with such an encouraging message. And you're even glowing; that's great. I hope the acid reflux remains controllable. It's so good that this thread was a lifeline in your darkest days.
Cuppasoupmonster I hope someone can advise you about dosing.
BalletN Happy news that you managed the roast, and I'm glad your mother is going to help out with cooking.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

OrangeOtter · 11/10/2022 16:06

Hey, new here! Hope everyone is as well as can be under their circumstances.

I’ve read so many threads but this is the first time I’ve commented. I’m currently 9 weeks pregnant and have been suffering with nausea and vomiting since 6 weeks. I was put on metaclopramide which worked for a few days and then stopped. So I was then prescribed Cyclzine but the same thing happened there. Been prescribed a new one today so fingers crossed this works.

My concern is about dehydration. None of my gps have tested my urine, in fact I’ve had three appointments (2 telephone and 1 in person) and they’ve spent a grant total of 7 minutes talking to me altogether. I had my midwife booking appt yesterday and they tested my urine and the midwife told the trainee that the keytone level was 3+ ‘which just tells us that she’s been vomiting’. The trainee asked if she should log it as abnormal and the midwife said yes but then nothing was said about it directly to me. Having googled it, I’m now worried that I’m dehydrated and baby is at risk. Is this something I should be worried about? Should I have said something.

Sorry for the super long message. I cannot thank everyone on here enough just for making me feel less alone through reading the posts.

LucindaE · 11/10/2022 21:15

OrangeOtter Welcome. I'm glad you have been reading back through the threads; I hope you find the suggestions in them helpful. What are the new meds? I can see it might trouble you that they aren't taking that measurement as seriously as they might. I think it is only prolonged dehydration that is damaging, and one of the problems is, I gather, though I'm not medical, that while hospitals used generally to admit sufferers at 3+, ketones aren't the best test of dehydration as they are a surer sign of starvation, which sounds dramatic but is inevitable when suffering from prolonged nausea and vomiting. A better test is if you have dark, scanty urine, a headache, blurry vision and inelastic skin. It is hard to fight your corner when feeling terrible, so don't feel guilty. If you are anxious, could you contact your local A and E directly, or perhaps phone the surgery tomorrow and say that you have some anxieities about ketones and if you need fluids. I hope others have some good suggestions too.

I've been really struggling with the Pregnacare tablets. Almost impossible to swallow without coming straight back up, but also irritating my IBS. Just started on the Bassett's soft and chewy pregnancy vitamins and so far so good. They're flippin pricey and have a slightly odd taste, but tolerable. Hope you're all hanging in there today x

OrangeOtter · 12/10/2022 20:55

Hi LucindaE,

Thank you for your response. The new medication seems to be working and I haven’t been sick for 24 hours. Fingers crossed it stays that way!! I think its Prochlorperazine buccal, its a tablet that melts between your lip and gum.

Hope everyone else is doing ok today!

LucindaE · 13/10/2022 20:12

OrangeOtter Various sufferers have found that one helpful. Glad it's helping.
BellaBella38 A lot of women on here have problems with the pregnancy vitamins, particularly with iron, and find the drop form easier.

Good tip from BellaBella3 about chewy vitamins. I'vd heard of the liquid form, but not the chewy ones...

I'm about 7 weeks now. I'm taking cyclazine 3x a day, plus b6. I'm feeling nauseas, but at what point do I ask for a 2nd line med. Is just having nausea enough for adding a second med?

I'm not sure. I just want to avoid it getting worse really

skyofdiamonds · 15/10/2022 01:16

Hey,

First post on here. I’m 6 weeks into first pregnancy.
got hit with severe vomiting last weekend, about 40 Times overnight…
Went to ED and ended up admitted all week.
have tried cyclizine, Ondansetron, xonvea, metoclopromide and prochlorperazine with none stopping the constant vomiting.
ended up on IV for most of my stay.
finally managed to take control by starting steroids and now have made it home again!
is anyone else in the same situation? And have it as severe as I do?
would love some support!

alwaysorange · 15/10/2022 06:56

@LucindaE Hello 👋🏻
Question for you, and those who have reached the pink castle if I may.
Little one is 5 months old and (especially for the last month) when I wake up in the morning I always feel quite sick. The feeling can come back in waves throughout the day too. I'm exclusively breastfeeding and I wondered if HG can linger pp, especially if BFing? Thanks

Weathergirl1 · 15/10/2022 20:45

Hi @LucindaE and everyone - I'm out the other side!! DS2 was out on Wednesday at 1.15pm weighing 9lbs exactly (no-one could quite believe where I managed to stash away that weight of baby as my bump was so small)! I confess that I have actually had to take a few more ondansetron tablets since then but it was side effects of the oramorph they gave me rather than the HG nausea which seems to have gone thankfully. 🤞

Thank you so much for all the support over the last 6 months or so, it's made everything so much easier to cope with knowing that I wasn't alone.

BalletN · 15/10/2022 20:54

@Weathergirl1 Congratulations!! I'm delighted to hear your lovely news

LucindaE · 15/10/2022 21:48

skyofdiamonds Welcome. My goodness, that sounds dreadful. Was it forty heaves - the way most doctors count it - or - still worse - forty separate vomiting sessions? There have been others on these threads who have had it as badly. One of them - kalidasa had it badly for two pregnancies, was in fact, in hospital for weeks, though it greatly improved in the latter weeks of pregnancy, and then had it much more mildly for the third. For them to put you on steroids obviously means that you have it very severely. I don't know if there is anyone on here atm who has it as badly, though everyone is very supportive on here. It also might be an idea to phone Pregnancy Sickness Support on 024 7638 2020 to ask if you can be paired with someone who has had it equally severely. I'm assuming they've ruled out twins? It does improve for many who suffer severely at some point between 14-21 weeks, and I hope it does for you. My laptop is playing up atm so I daren't scroll back to get to my list of helpful drinks and - hopefully applicable - foods and suggestions about kesostix atm. I'll try and put them on in a minute.
alwaysorange Definitely, breast feeding can be associated with the symptoms lingering in a few sufferers on these threads, a handful out of more than eleven years of these therads. Oddly, I had it, though I didn't suffer severely or for very long, it came back with breast feeding. The hormones seem to trigger it. It is quite miserable, though generally nothing like as severe as with Hyperemesis itself. Don't feel guilty if it encourages you to go for weaning earlier than you would have intended. I always clears up then, thank goodness.
Weathergirl1 That is such happy news. Congratulations. StarStarFlowersSmile Enjoy baby and welcome to the fabled Pink Castle at the end of the Hyperemesis Horror Experience. I am so glad the thread helped.
BalletN How are things?

OP posts:
LucindaE · 15/10/2022 21:55

Okapi99 Sorry about the lingering nausea. If it's quite severe, definitely ask for additional or alternative meds. It does vary between sufferers with different meds, unfortunately. Do anti acids help the nausea at all?
skyofdiamonds Here is that normal spiel about drinks, etc, I mentioned earlier.
ost sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20, or sometimes later. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, frozen smoothie ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Vimto, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange (M and S has been recommende), 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of strawberry or chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport. Also, pink lemonade , cloudy lemonade and Sprite. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, minature salty Yorkshire Puddings , dry cereals and slices of melon and mango. Protein drinks have also been mentioned.
