I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

So the dr called me back and said he doesn't know if I can have Xonvea as he can't see it to prescribe... He will prescribe cyclazine, but not a b6 supplement 🤔

Ask him to look up Doxylamine/pyridoxine thats its scientific name. I hope you can get some still 🤞

Hi Abbs.

My children are 18,15,14,10 and 5 now. I won't lie, it was damn hard work But I wasn't working, I had a lot of help from my in-laws (who gave both sadly passed away now), and my husband. My parents also helped too. I've no idea how my parents will react this time though 🙈

Most of mine don't need much help now, they can all(bar the 5year old) make their own tea and drinks etc.

I've got a telephone appt with my Dr this morning. I've asked the receptionist to say I wasn't this xonvea, though I have heard the are supply issues (according to pss), so fingers crossed x

Oh wow. I honestly take my hat off to you to go through it so many times. Im so sorry about your in laws. Having that support must have must have helped you out so much. Can your older children help with your 5yr old at all? I hope you can still get xonvea. 🤞🤞🤞

Okapi99 · 27/09/2022 22:30

Yes, my older children are fantastic. ❤️

I honestly wouldn't have had another one. I'm excited but pretty scared at the same time. I think because I know it isn't the whole way through I can cope better. I was still a mess though.

I'm going to the pharmacy in the morning and speaking to them. I also work at the hospital so might have a chat to one of the pharmacists there too 😂

BalletN · 28/09/2022 07:12

@Okapi99 It might depend on where you live. I live in Scotland and Xonvea was never given a licence here. I'm on cyclizine, prochloperazine and omeprazole and then just buy my own low dose b6. Good luck!

I'm in NW England. My previous babies I only ever had one type of antiemetic at once. So interesting you have 2

Will keep my fingers crossed.

BalletN · 28/09/2022 08:53

@Okapi99 If you are in England then you should be able to get Xonvea from your gp. During my first pregnancy I was only ever on one antiemitic at a time. I have a different doctor this time who was happy to prescribe a combination and it's worked much better for me.

Okapi99 · 28/09/2022 15:00

So my Dr called back and he cant prescribe xonvea, says an obstetrics Dr has to prescribe it.

He has prescribed cyclazine instead. 😔

LucindaE · 28/09/2022 21:20

I hope everyone isn't suffering too badly today.

They most certainly can prescribe, but it’s because of NHS “cost” issues they try and hold off and use alternatives.

I tried promethazine, cyclizine and domperidone before I managed to get the GP to put me on Xonvea and it has been a godsend in my HG pregnancy. I’ve been taking it since about week 8 and now 39 weeks. Give the cyclizine a go, but if it doesn’t relieve any symptoms keep pushing for the Xonvea and if they say no then challenge their decision as to why. Tell the GP it is in British National Formulary and is a licensed medication in England so why not? That should work 😉

Okapi99 · 29/09/2022 08:05

Hi chloe. The gp is saying he needs the obstetrics Dr to agree to me having the xonvea, and then he will prescribe it.
I'm going to self refer this morning, then I'll ring the ante natal clinic and see if they can help

Okapi99 · 29/09/2022 09:31

Spoke to the antenatal clinic, who got a midwife to speak to me, and she's going to get a Dr to call me back today 🎉

Cuppasoupmonster · 29/09/2022 10:18

Hi ladies. Switched to promethazine last night and happy to report I got my first decent night’s sleep in weeks - woke once in 8 hours to take some meds then dropped off again instantly. It has been incredible to wake up without a stomach ache from endless retching. My whole body feels so much more relaxed and peaceful and I just managed a proper healthy breakfast. Really hoping it continues.

ohCARP · 29/09/2022 18:47

Hi all,

Baby girl was born yesterday morning (3 weeks early!) after a tough pregnancy she blessed me with a short and straightforward labour and so far she's very chilled. My eldest adores her already although she has been a bit emotional which is understandable.

The Hyperemesis did show up a bit when I first started breastfeeding her, in that food absolutely repulsed me but that seems to have passed now and I'm currently feeding her and eating pizza. I hope you're all ok and that your HG symptoms are manageable.

Thanks to everyone for your words of support especially in the early days and good luck for the rest of your pregnancies xx

Weathergirl1 · 29/09/2022 19:06

Ah congratulations @ohCARP ! Not long to go for me now too - desperately not hoping to go into labour before the ELCS date though.

Glad to hear the hyperemesis has gone again, but I wasn't expecting you to say it came back with breastfeeding 😬

ohCARP · 29/09/2022 19:08

@Weathergirl1 sorry 🙈 with my first I had it whenever I fed her for a while. I wasn't sick but I couldn't bear the thought of food let alone look at or eat it while I fed her. I think it's to do with hormones. It was nothing like pregnancy Hyperemesis hell though!

A lot of women have more than 1. My first pregnancy i started on cyclizine but it didn't work so stopped it. Was put on ondansatron and metoclopromide together. Still didnt work so they added steroids as well!
2nd pregnancy has xonvea from day 1 and took a couple metoclopromide when it was really bad.
I had a boy first then a girl so not sure if having a girl made the hg less severe or not.

ChloeHel · 29/09/2022 19:23

@ohCARP oh congratulations!!! So happy for you to finally be over the worse of HG! 3 weeks early! Lucky you haha, mine is still hanging on at 39+1!!

Noooo thats incorrect 😞 can you go to a hg day unit at the hospital and get some that way?
The whole reason xonvea was registered here was for hg women to prevent them needing to see obstetric drs and keep women out of hospital. Can you see another gp? The first gp i asked said no the second was very happy to give it and thanked me afterwards for educating him on hg and xonvea

Huge congratulations hun! Enjoy your newborn baby bubble.
So glad hg is over for you. 😍

Okapi99 · 29/09/2022 20:18

Hi Abbs! I spoke to antenatal clinic where a consultant called me back this afternoon. She told me that what my gp said was incorrect and that he Can prescribe it.

She's sending a letter to my gp telling him to prescribe it for me. So fingers crossed!

I'm taking the cyclazine for now, no sign of sickness yet x

BalletN · 29/09/2022 20:42

@ohCARP Congratulations! Delighted that your HG journey is over. Lots of love to you and your family!

LucindaE · 29/09/2022 20:43

OhCARP Thank you so much for your lovely message of encouragement. Great that baby arrived three weeks early. I am glad that the recurrence of Hyperemesis symptoms with the let down hormones has cleared up. Enjoy your baby girl. StarWinkFlowersBrew
Weathergirl1 For a very small minority of women - maybe ten including ohCARP in all the years of these threads, plus me from years ago- the symptoms do come back in milder form with breast feeding, but it's very unusual.
Okapi19 Sorry, I managed to miss a post from you again. Great advice from ChloeHel and abbs1 and others. I hope you manage to get Xonvea.

BalletN Interesting about Scotland.

Definitely get on the full dose straight away as it takes a week or two to fully build up in your system. Honestly it was a life saver for me. I still felt nauseous but nothing compared to my previous pregnancy. I every time i started into my next week of pregnancy i had a hormone surge i felt more rough for like 24hours but then ok again. You may need to take cyclizine alongside it but see how you go.

Okapi99 · 29/09/2022 21:51

Thank you! I do worry it'll be a fight to get it prescribed each time but I'm hoping not! I'm going to request the consultant to be my consultant cause she was so so nice on the phone to me!

Does anyone know if these forums are on tapa talk? Finding it hard to manage on the phone. I can't see the thread when I reply

greenerfingers · 30/09/2022 06:32

Congratulations @ohCARP! Very happy for you!

I have 9 weeks or so left and my acid reflux is very severe again. It's bringing on my sickness which is so strange as I never got this with my first. Although this baby is breech currently and feels like it'll be a bigger baby so perhaps it's that.

Being a veteran though I keep telling myself it's 9 weeks at the end not the beginning so I think I'll forego starting meds again (and having to wean off of them too). The end is in sight, just need to take it one day at a time.
