I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@tigger2022 hi! Yes they generally say give it at least three days :)

LucindaE · 29/03/2022 22:06

Had a drama today - OH gashed his foot and it took pressure, then two tourniquets and elevation before the bleeding stopped. He's OK., probably lost a pint of blood, but that's how much you donate. I hope that doesn't make people feel ill. Ayway, I'll just add FateHasRedesignedMost 's new due date and have an early night.

Hi warriors. Has anyone else seen an increase in nausea and the rest of it around 30 weeks? I've had a few half decent weeks and thought I was on the sunny uplands finally. Now the 24 hr rolling sea sickness is back :-( Is this normal? I also have gestational diabetes (diet controlled) and am struggling to work out what it is that is making me feel so rotten again.

ohCARP · 30/03/2022 10:37

@Qwerty2000 I didn't have nausea but I did have sickness caused by heartburn. I know my friend suffered the whole way through with her two pregnancies and was being hospitalised until quite late on. So it does happen but there is support. It's so miserable though, I hope this is just a wobble and you're back to feeling ok soon.

I'm so impatient for my scan this afternoon. I didn't think I would be because I haven't been looking forward to it but I just want it over with now

FateHasRedesignedMost · 30/03/2022 10:53

@Qwerty2000

Yes the HG tends to make a comeback for me in the last trimester. I’m 32 weeks and still vomiting a lot, though I had a few weeks of feeling much better in 2nd trimester.

I’m back on ondansetron to try and keep it under control. I don’t have the dizziness of first trimester unless I’m in the car, then I feel travel sick!

Sorry you’re feeling rough!

FateHasRedesignedMost · 30/03/2022 10:55

@LucindaE

Sorry to hear about your husband’s foot! How did it happen? Hope he’s feeling better and you’ve both got over the shock!

7Worfs · 30/03/2022 11:33

I think I have COVID - faint line on the test. I have a massive headache and am exhausted. Should I call the GP for blood thinners or is that an overreaction?

ohCARP · 30/03/2022 11:57

@7Worfs how many weeks are you? I think it's worth a call if you're over 28 weeks. I hope you don't suffer too much. I had it a few weeks ago and the headache was not pleasant

@LucindaE sorry I missed the part about your husband - does he still have a foot?!

7Worfs · 30/03/2022 13:10

Thanks @ohCARP I’m 18 weeks. I’m a bit scared cause I’m not vaccinated but I hope it will be like a minor cold. How long did it take you to recover?
I called the GP, they said they are not aware of such a guidance, so I called the midwives next. They took my name and will pass it to the midwife who specialises in COVID in pregnancy and call me back in a day or two.

BuffyFanForever · 30/03/2022 13:52

Gosh @LucindaE poor him! How did he manage that?
How is everyone doing? Anyone getting any sleep?

Thanks. The doctor advised gaviscon, usual meds etc, saying it could be just baby's large size pushing up against the stomach now.

ohCARP · 30/03/2022 15:04

@7Worfs I felt rubbish for about 10 days but it was like a cold really. I hope you get it mildly!

@Qwerty2000 I asked for omeprazole for heartburn and it worked really well. Nothing else touched it but I felt so much better after the first capsule. If gaviscon doesn't help you could ask for that

fumedup · 30/03/2022 16:08

Hi all, mind if I joinBlush. I had Covid and thought I'd lost my taste and was nauseous from that. Actually I was pregnant and 1 week! Every single pregnancy my hyperemesis starts earlier. This is the third one and now at 5 weeks it's full swing. Due date early December Smile

fumedup · 30/03/2022 16:15

@Qwerty2000 my last pregnancy I not only had hyperemesis but the worst acid reflux ever. It started at 5 weeks till 20 onward. Finally at 18 weeks a doctor friend recommended omeprazole. It took a week or so but it was like a magic switch. Whenever I missed the dose I would really suffer. It also helped ease my vomiting as half was from hyperemesis and then when I had nothing to vomit the acid reflux would have me chucking up bile and stomach acid. God I thought nothing could top hyperemesis but reflux did. Oddly I never had any in my third trimester when you're supposed to get it Confused

ChloeHel · 30/03/2022 18:22

12 week scan all ok! They pushed me forward a few days so I’m now 13 weeks with a due date of Oct 5th! Had a terrible bout of sickness today though, was in the ultrasound department with my sick bowl!

@ohCARP hope everything went well for you today!

ohCARP · 30/03/2022 18:25

@ChloeHel yay! That's great news! Not great about the sickness but yay for being further along than you thought!

My scan went well too. Baby was in an awkward position so we were there for ages but everything looks good. I'm 4 days behind where I thought so I'm 11+3 my due date is 16th October 😊

ChloeHel · 30/03/2022 18:32

@ohCARP Aw so glad it went well, even if they did push you back! A few extra days of cooking! Straight back to bed though, that was the first time I’ve been out for a long time and it was so hard :( I see no end in sight with this HG!

ohCARP · 30/03/2022 18:35

@ChloeHel I know exactly what you mean. I've barely been out of bed in 5 weeks and they made me walk for 15 minutes to try and get the baby in a better position. I was so shattered and my Fitbit logged it as cardio!

They couldn't do the nuchal measurements so I have to go back at 14 weeks for the quadruple blood test but I'm not sad that I got to see baby for longer than normal 🥰

LucindaE · 30/03/2022 20:15

ohCARP FateHasRedesignedMost BuffyFanForever and everyone - thanks for sympathy! OH did it by treading on a b it of broken glass. I don't know how it got there. Yes, OH is OK and still has two feet, just a bit shaky. He must have lost more than a pint of blood as he has never been affected by donating it.

Welcome to fumedup. Sorry you are suffering again and so early. As you are a veteran, you don't need my normal spiel. Brave of you to go for it again. There's lots of support on here.
Qwerty2000 Sorry to hear its back.I so agree with others, I do hope it's a glitch. It does seem to return for some, though only rarely as badly as in the early weeks.
ohCARP and ChloeHel Happy news about scan results. That fifteen minutes walk sounds very harsh treatment, my goodness.
7worfs Sorry to hear that you may have Covid. Great advice from others.

Hello brave ladies. I’m looking for some company in my misery. I thought I was at least 12w but today had scan, and only 8 +5. I’ve been lying in bed for last 2w trying not to move. So nauseous, and constantly freezing cold, and then cold sweats. I feel really ill. Tried cyclozine which worked in other pregnancies but just made me feel worse. Trying xonvea now. Never had symptoms like this before.

Kiwi202 · 30/03/2022 22:14

Hello everyone, third time HG sufferer here. About 11-12 weeks in. This is the first time I’ve reached out on an online board / Mumsnet in general so I’m so happy to see this support group, wished I joined during my first pregnancy.

I’m currently off my meds because I forgot to renew my Ondansetron prescription in time. Really feeling massive regret now for leaving it so late as I’m back to puking up 10-15 times a day. With some blood coming up too, urgh. Hopefully I’ll be back on them tomorrow. I just need to distract myself from the constant pain in the meantime.

During my first pregnancy I was told that I was “being dramatic” about my symptoms and was asked by every single doctor “have you tried ginger?” It was infuriating!!!! It was only when I landed in hospital that they took it seriously. Nowadays I think awareness has gotten better but I still feel like I know much more about HG than any of the midwives, doctors or consultants I’ve seen which is quite sad. But the same could be said for anyone who suffers from any other rare condition I guess. A lot of the time we’re way more up to date with the latest studies and research than our doctors! It’s very tiring having to advocate for ourselves constantly.

Anyway, it’s nice to vent to people who understand, thank you. Hope everyone finds some relief soon x

Piper22 · 30/03/2022 22:23

Hi all, just wanted to drop in on this thread to offer a bit of solidarity. I had hg throughout my whole pregnancy (my DS is now 2.5). Within hours of giving birth I was eating without even a flicker of nausea. Hang in there everyone, you’re all so bloody strong.

fumedup · 30/03/2022 22:35

Thank you @LucindaE . Glad to hear your OH is ok!

@ettariva I'm sorry to hear you're suffering so much, it DOES get easier. Third time now and it's all I tell myself. Even though it's more severe each pregnancy for me I know around 17 weeks the symptoms decrease. Also try different meds to see if there are any you click better with. I'm allergic to anti-sickness meds so usually just grit and bare with knowing that soon it'll be over. I know I'm allergic because a doctor while giving me iv fluids snuck it in (even though I'd said no meds, just water). Anyway I woke up with alarms blaring and almost in anaphylactic shock. Sadly I had a second trimester loss right after that incident.

@Kiwi202 poor you I can totally relate. My first pregnancy I was told it's impossible to be that sick and so early on. It was all psychological and me psyching myself out 🙄. Now I get a wide berth.

Melleebacca · 31/03/2022 07:14

@Kiwi202 I’m in NZ, are you an ex-pat?
I just saw on the HER foundation that they’ve isolated what gene causes HG, and it is definitely not in your head! It’s genetic!

@ChloeHel Yay for getting your due date moved forward. They don’t do that here unless you’re out by more than 7 days (mine was only 2 days)

@ohCARP oh how annoying! You would think after all we go through for these babes, they could at least behave for scans! Hopefully you’re resting up well now.

@ettariva I’m sorry you’re feeling so rotten. Xonvea has helped lots of people on here, I haven’t tried it personally, but I hope you get some relief with it.

I had my 30wk midwife appt yesterday, and baby is definitely head down, as I thought, but also very engaged in my pelvis. Now hoping he stays out for at least the next 7weeks until I finish up work! Fortunately as we get closer to Easter holidays, my workload does decrease. I’m now trying to make sure everything at home is all ready just in case he does come earlier than expected. Still very nauseous in the mornings and evenings and very fatigued. Looking forward to some quiet time during the Easter break!

Waves to everyone else, and apologies to anyone I’ve missed.

tigger2022 · 31/03/2022 08:56

I feel really sick and hardly got any sleep BUT 7 weeks today and apparently he/she is the size of a strawberry Smile

It will all be worth it, it will all be worth it, it will all be worth it...
